Hyundai i30

The Kia cee'd proved that although the Koreans might not know much about naming a car, they're certainly learning how to build one.

Slipstreaming the cee'd into the European market comes another Korean hatch, the Hyundai i30.

Hyundai i30Hyundai i30 2Hyundai i30 3Yes, it sounds like the answer to the question, 'How old are you, Tarzan?', but you'd better get used to it: Hyundai is planning to follow the i30 with an i10, i20, i40 and, yes, you guessed it, i60.

Aimed firmly at the Ford Focus, Renault Megane et al, the i30 promises a leap in quality over previous-generation Hyundais, as well as more Euro-friendly styling.

It looks pleasantly inoffensive, and there's plenty of kit on board, too. Standard spec includes aircon, alloy wheels, ESP and Hyundai's five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Which is good, but not quite in the same league as the cee'd's seven-year bullet-proof guarantee.

There are three trims to pick from - Comfort, Style and Premium - and 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol engines, as well as 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels.

With prices from the friendly side of 11 grand, the i30 could be a tempting little number when it arrives on these shores in September. Could it be better than the cee'd? We'll let you know as soon as we get our hands on one.

2007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500

Making Its Mark: The IMPRINT RLS

The birth of the IMPRINT RLS marks the beginning of a new sonic era. While the exterior flaunts a sleek, elegant, one-of-a-kind style, the interior also houses the core Alpine IMPRINT sound technology – making its mark as the absolute show-stopping vehicle for 2007.

2007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R5002007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500 22007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500 3The IMPRINT RLS by birthright started off as a Mercedes Benz R500, and was slowly morphed into a car that transcends all laws of space and time. This futuristic concept-like car was brought to life by Alpine’s Advanced Application R&D team, Steve Brown, Gary Bell, Brent Davison with the help of Alpine Canada’s Glen Swackhamer and Rino Odorico.

Breathing life into the RLS required a complete dismantling, relocating, building, and reinforcing experiment. Extreme modifications include gas and brake pedal relocation to allow the car to be driven from either front seat. To continue Alpine tradition of unconventional door and seat combinations, the IMPRINT RLS features a unique rotating assembly allowing suicide doors to swing into the vehicle with the seat attached. In addition to motorized seats, there’s motorization going on in the rear with a custom motorized amp rack. This rack houses 6 PDX amplifiers that power the entire sound system and stealthily rotate out of the back of the SUV.

The body itself took massive hours of fiberglass, duraglas, grinding, primering, sanding, you name it. The end result bodes well for elegance as sleek lines and shadows define intricate details. A custom-mixed Carrizma Candy Cherry Cola paint gives the car a luminous effect, you’d swear the IMPRINT RLS dances depending on how much light shines on it. While the RLS is getting its groove on, you can’t miss its shoes: massive 26” and 30” custom TIS model 01 wheels.

The interior compliments the sophisticated theme with details such as Italian leather, rich Burl Wood inserts. Near the center console, a unique gauge pod with a custom clock and autometer gauges deliver the car’s vital signs. Continuous movement from the clock lets you know the IMPRINT RLS is alive and kicking. But most importantly, the interior was strictly designed to house the best sound possible with IMPRINT sound technology.

While the car itself will turn heads based on looks alone, it’s the sound quality inside that truly demonstrates Alpine IMPRINT sound architecture. The heart and brain of the IMPRINT RLS system unfolds from the Alpine CDA-9887, the new and true IMPRINT sound tuning head unit. The built in processor has over 500 adjustments for frequency and measures and adjusts time correction for you when hooked to the IMPRINT Specialist Tuning Kit. With IMPRINT, special software and microphone help analyze the car’s acoustical problems and automatically tunes the system for optimal sound processing. Not only does this cut down tuning time to less than half an hour, but it also achieves drastically improved sound stage, tonal balance and definition.

The sound system’s supporting cast includes the motorized PDX amplifiers, as mentioned, as well as SPX-17REF component speakers arranged in a D'Appolito configuration, and four SPX-1043D subwoofers to please all listeners. Added options include the Alpine KCA-SC100 which controls a SIRIUS Satellite Radio Sportster 4, and Alpine KCE-422i Full Speed connection for iPod for quick access of Apple Lossless-encoded music for a high-quality digital music experience.

Listeners swallowed inside the IMPRINT RLS can get a good dose of sound reproduction at its finest. Catch the IMPRINT RLS touring nationwide at select events throughout 2007.

Nanjing Auto Preaches to Choir by Showcasing New MG TF at Silverstone MG Confab

Fittingly for a car that has long been the embodiment of the British car-enthusiast lifestyle, the new MG TF built in Longbridge, England, under Nanjing Auto Corporation (NAC) ownership greeted the public for the first time at the Silverstone racetrack this weekend.

New Nanjing MG TF The event was the 57th MG international race meeting at the legendary track, which calls itself "the home of British motor racing." The weekend also featured what organizers called the world's largest gathering of MG cars from the past eight decades.

NAC MG Sales and Marketing Director Gary Hagen was on-site to talk to MG lovers about the new model, which went into production at the end of May in Longbridge and goes on sale later this year.

Audi Announces Pricing on 2008 RS 4 Cabriolet

Audi said that its highly anticipated 2008 RS 4 Cabriolet will start at $82,675, including a $775 destination charge, when it goes on sale in the United States this fall.

2008 Audi RS 4 CabrioletBut the actual price is still up in the air, since Audi said the gas-guzzler tax "will be determined prior to arrival in U.S. showrooms." The Fuel Economy Web Site said the gas-guzzler tax can range from $1,000 to $7,700, based on the combined mpg rating of a car in question. The federal tax is designed to "discourage the production and purchase of fuel-inefficient vehicles," according to the site.

The tax applies only to cars, not trucks.

The high-performance drop top is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 FSI engine that churns out 420 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 317 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. It will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

Nissan Announces Pricing on 2008 Versa

The Nissan Versa enters its sophomore year with a $100 price bump on the hatchback model and a bit more sporty flair for the sedan version. The base 2008 Versa hatchback 1.8 S with a six-speed manual transmission starts at $13,275, including a $625 destination charge.

2008 Nissan VersaThe top-of-the-line Versa hatchback 1.8 SL with a continuously variable transmission starts at $16,275, including shipping.

Nissan said the sport package, which was previously available on the Versa hatchback 1.8 SL, is now a $700 option on the Versa sedan 1.8 SL model. The sport package bundles a rear spoiler, lower body side sill extensions, a chin spoiler and foglights to the sedan model for 2008.

The 2008 Nissan Versa sedan ranges in price from $13,175 for the base 1.8 S model to $16,175 for the top-of-the-line 1.8 SL.

Nissan reports that the Versa had "strong sales momentum" in its freshman year, with combined sedan and hatchback sales topping more than 52,000 units in less than one year of production.

2009 Hyundai Genesis spy photos

Hyundai has begun testing redesigned prototypes of its future luxury car that are similar in appearance to the Genesis concept car that debuted earlier this year at the 2007 New York Auto Show.

2009 Hyundai Genesis2009 Hyundai Genesis 2The latest prototype's grille is trapezoidal, instead of the former prototype's round-cornered rectangle, and the grille slats are no longer vertical, but horizontal like the original concept.

The new car's headlights are more pointed, and they stretch back along the fenders, again mimicking the shape of the Genesis showcar's lights. The prototype's front bumper has been toned down, with more conventional foglamps integrated with a rounded lower air intake.

Although the sedan's profile hasn't been altered since the first prototype, the latest version shows a shark-fin antenna mounted on the roof. Nine-spoke wheels are nearly identical to those used on the showcar.

BMW 6-Series

BMW dieselfication of its coupe range goes all the way to the top. Well, all the way to the 6-Series, at least.

BMW 6-SeriesBMW 6-Series 2BMW 6-Series 3The ocularly challenging Six is set to go on sale with BMW's 3.0-litre twin turbo six-cylinder diesel engine and it will be called the 635d.

With 282bhp, the 635d does not disgrace the big coupe, managing 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and hitting an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

There's a six-speed auto as standard with flappy paddles for a sportier feel, but the 635d will still return 40.9mpg on the combined cycle.

At the same time the diesel engine is introduced, BMW is sneaking in a minor restyle of the Six.

You'll have to pay close attention to spot the larger front air intake, reshaped headlights with LED indicators, and boot lid that now incorporates a high level brake light.

Under the skin, BMW says the petrol 630i's engine is more frugal, while inside there's a simplified iDrive system for all models. Which means that people other than computer programmers and rocket scientists will be able to adjust the aircon temperature.

And every 6-Series now also comes with regenerative braking - à la 1-Series - to save fuel and energy.

No prices yet for the tweaked 6-Series, but expect the 635d to weigh in at more than 50 grand when it reaches the UK.

2008 BMW X5 M Sport Package

The new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport comes equipped with 19-inch V-spoke M light alloy wheels, Sports suspension, M Aerodynamic body styling, Sports seats, matt aluminium surround to the side window frames, high-gloss Shadowline roof rails, Anthracite headlining and M leather steering wheel. 2008 BMW X5 M Sport Package2008 BMW X5 M Sport Package 22008 BMW X5 M Sport Package 32008 BMW X5 M Sport Package 42008 BMW X5 M Sport Package 5The introduction of M Sport to the BMW X5 range has been eagerly awaited by buyers as 90 per cent of the previous models sold were specified as a Sport.

The new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport will be available in six colours: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Carbon Black, Monaco Blue, Space Grey, Titanium Silver. Inside and Nevada leather upholstery is standard and is available in Black, Grey, Beige and Saddle Brown hues. Dark Walnut interior trim is standard on the X5 4.8i M Sport but customers can specify Brushed Aluminium, Dark Bamboo or Light Poplar at no additional cost.

Power for the car comes from a 4,799cc engine fitted with Bi-VANOS and VALVETRONIC variable valve technologies to produce 355hp. The advanced engine is capable of propelling the car from zero to 62mph in 6.5 seconds before going on to a top speed of 150mph. The 4.8-litre powerplant still records 22.6mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of 299g/km – both figures that better rival products from Porsche and Audi.

The introduction of a new variant to the X5 range comes as the sales figures reveal that the model is exceeding original expectations. Customer demand for the BMW X5 means the model is forward sold until the end of 2007. The 3.0-litre diesel engined variant is still the most popular X5 accounting for more than 90 per cent of orders.

The BMW X5 4.8i M Sport costs Ј53,440 OTR. M Sport will be offered on 3.0d and 3.0si models later in 2007 and further details will be announced nearer the time.

Bentley Brooklands

Recently staged a coup on the government of a sizeable nation? Need a car to reflect your benevolent-yet-frighteningly-powerful status?

Well, El Presidente, may we recommend the Bentley Brooklands Coupe?

Bentley BrooklandsBentley Brooklands 2Bentley Brooklands 3Bentley Brooklands 4Based on the Arnage chassis, the Brooklands coupe is a luxury four-seater powered by Bentley's most powerful V8 ever.

A modified version of Bentley's 6.75-litre twin-turbo, the hand-built Brooklands engine develops 530bhp at just 4,000rpm and a terrifying 774lb ft of torque at 3,250rpm. That's the highest torque output of any V8. In the world.

All that power is put to the road through a semi-automatic six-speed box, with the Brooklands hitting 60mph in five seconds flat before topping out at 184mph.

As an option, you can also spec the biggest set of brakes of any production car on the road: the 420mm cross-drilled discs off the Conti GT Diamond series.

But make no mistake, the Brooklands is no lithe-and-low supercar. It's massive. See those delicate little five-spoke wheels? They're 20-inchers. Gives you an idea of the sheer size of the thing.

The over-the-top-theme continues in the cabin, with swathes of aluminium and carbon fibres complemented by that lurid, luminous leather - an option that Bentley calls 'Cashew' and we call deeply tasteless.

But at least it'll be exclusive tastelessness: only 550 Brooklands coupes will be built, with prices starting around £220,000, and the first deliveries should arrive in early 2008.

The only problem, El Presidente, is that this year's allocation has already sold out. We're sorry, we're sorry...

Volkswagen Crafter Race Home

Now there's a double entendre that should stir the hearts of enthusiasts.

Volkswagen Crafter Race HomeVolkswagen Crafter Race Home 2Volkswagen Crafter Race Home 3Unfortunately, we're speaking only of British enthusiasts, who now are able to buy an exclusive edition of the Volkswagen Crafter van called the Race Home. Developed at the company's Van Centre here, the Race Home — based on the long-wheelbase, high-roof Crafter panel van — is aimed primarily at motorcycle racers, but should have even broader appeal to cyclists and motorsports enthusiasts of all stripes.

The Crafter Race Home can transport two motorcycles or a quad bike, and can serve as a base for race weekends. It's outfitted with hand-built furniture, leather upholstery, two pull-out double beds, double-glazed windows with blinds and a heating system. A full kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and three-burner gas grill, and the bathroom has a toilet and shower.

When the Race Home is set up, it includes a garage area with walls, ceiling and heavy-duty checker-plate flooring, plus storage space for tools and equipment.

Fitted with a 136-horsepower 2.5-liter turbodiesel, the Crafter Race Home is priced in England at $93,918 including VAT.

Volkswagen Passat

Even with that chrome grill and incongruous V6 in the model line-up, we always knew that the Volkswagen Passat was a bit boring at heart.

And now the big VW has proved its true colours. It's not just boring, it's a caravanner.

The Passat Estate has beaten off stiff competition to be voted Towcar of the Year 2007.

VW PassatApparently the Passat was subjected to a rigorous testing programme before being awarded the title.

Although the details of this test are unclear, we must assume that the 'idling down the outside lane of the A30 at 30mph with a two-mile queue of traffic behind' challenge, the 'how many miles can you cover before realising that you forgot to hitch your caravan onto the towbar back at the trailer park' exam and, of course, the 'most ridiculous wing mirror extensions' shootout all formed part of the curriculum.

On a serious note, we hope - as will anyone who saw the 'Top Gear Goes Camping' episode a couple of series back - that the examiners saw fit to test the fireproof qualities of the Passat. It's a dangerous business, this camping lark.

2009 Dodge Durango Hybrid

Dodge offered short test-drives of the 2009 Durango Hybrid earlier this week, and provided a few specifications as well. The Durango and Chrysler Aspen will use the same two-mode hybrid system that we experienced earlier this year in the hybrid Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon
2009 Dodge Durango HybridThe system was developed in cooperation with General Motors and BMW. This means it can run on electric motor only (as it does in reverse and for low-speed forward trundling) or it can use the electric motor to augment the big gas motor.

Think of it more like a Prius than a Honda Accord Hybrid, which is a so-called mild hybrid. Chrysler estimates that the Durango Hybrid will get about 40 percent better fuel economy in the city. The average Hemi Durango can't even manage 15 miles on one gallon of fuel around town.

One similarity to Honda's soon-to-be-discontinued Accord Hybrid is that both use cylinder deactivation to improve highway fuel economy. Dodge says that the addition of the electric motors mean that the V8 will run on four cylinders more often than a standard Durango and should account for a 25 percent improvement to the Hemi Durango's 19 mpg highway performance.

Eventually, Chrysler is expected to do a two-mode hybrid powered by one of its upcoming family of V6s. The company's current V6s have no cylinder-deactivation capability

new Mitsubishi Lancer

Not long now until we get to see the 'proper' production version of the new Mitsubishi Lancer. And, more importantly, the Evo.

new Mitsubishi Lancernew Mitsubishi Lancer 2Up until now, Mitsubishi has called its saloon a concept, even though we all knew the car we saw at the Geneva show a few months ago was the finished article.

But the Frankfurt show in September is the official D-Day for the new Lancer.

Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Lancer will get 1.5- and 1.8-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, plus another as-yet-unspecified powerplant.

But what we're interested in is the 2.0 turbo motor for the Evo, although Mitsubishi is not letting on just how powerful it will be.

You'll also have the choice of just about every gearbox in existence, with Mitsubishi offering a five- or six-speed manual, two autos or a CVT 'box depending on engine.

After the Frankfurt show, the Lancer goes on sale in the UK in March 2008, followed by a Sportback estate six months later.

Swiss Tuner Rinspeed Rolls Out Cocoon-Like "Sensosphere"

When Rinspeed introduced the Senso concept car at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show, it showed off a Zen-like vehicle that exerted a "positive effect" on passengers through the use of patterns, colors, music and aromatherapy. Now the Swiss tuner has taken some of the lessons learned with the Senso and applied them to postmodern aircraft cabins.

RinspeedRinspeed 2Rinspeed on Monday introduced its "Sensosphere" for airplanes, a concept developed in partnership with Strahle & Hess, Lumitec and the University of Zurich. The goal was to move away from "clinical and plastic" aircraft interiors into an elaborate sensory cocoon that puts a premium on mood lighting, fragrances and sound. The Sensosphere uses high-tech, computer-controlled surfaces that shine green, blue or orange. Rinspeed showed off images of the Sensosphere mimicking a sunset or a starry night inside an airplane cabin. Rinspeed said "the material can be made into any shape and does not need electric bulbs or LEDs." Instead, it uses what is described as "an innovative electroluminescent film technology."

"On the basis of the measured data, the passengers now receive various impulses to their senses that put them in a state of relaxed attentiveness," Rinspeed said in a statement.

In the past, Rinspeed has brought out many showstoppers at European auto shows, including such concepts as the zaZen, which featured a rear window that uses lighting technology to become a large holograph. At the 2007 Geneva Auto Show, Rinspeed rolled out the eXasis, a two-seater made of transparent high-tech plastic in collaboration with Bayer Material Science.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Nissan's 2009 Skyline GT-R made an unexpected appearance at this past weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed, completing the hill climb in the rain twice on Saturday and twice more on Sunday.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R 2Despite its numerous runs, Nissan made no effort to publicize the effort. In fact, the GT-R was conspicuously absent from the event announcer's script. Every other car was formally introduced prior to its ascent, including the Audi R8 that went before the GT-R and the Ford GT that went after. When the GT-R appeared at the starting line, however, the speakers went silent and it took off in silence.

And we mean silence, as the GT-R was virtually inaudible compared to the rest of the field. It was enough to compel spectators to ask each other, "What was that thing?"

When the car returned to the staging area on Sunday, our on-site reporter said that it appeared as though Toshio Suzuki was at the wheel. He was the test driver we spotted running hot laps at Laguna Seca Raceway and Sears Point in February.

Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640

Edo Competition has tuned supercars from the Ford GT to the Maserati MC12. Naturally, it couldn't resist the opportunity to apply a little nip-and-tuck to the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640.

Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 2Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 3Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 4Speaking of plastic surgery, there's a new rear wing with an adjustable lip, plus a rearview camera and lots of carbon-fiber trim in the cockpit.

Edo elected to forego implants, focusing instead on squeezing a tad more juice from the Lambo's already potent 6.5-liter V12.

With such tweaks as a recalibrated ECU, high-flow air filters and redesigned stainless-steel exhaust system with high-flow mufflers, the Edo LP640 is bumped to 663 horsepower and 498 pound-feet of torque.

Edo estimates 0-60 acceleration in less than 3.8 seconds, with top speed climbing to 216 mph.

2007 Porsche Boxster

The 2007 Boxster and Boxster S, aided by more power and torque via new engines fitted with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing and lift system, cement the Boxster as the sportscar kingdom's most practical and entertaining value.

2007 Porsche Boxster2007 Porsche Boxster 22007 Porsche Boxster 32007 Porsche Boxster 42007 Porsche Boxster 5The engine in the Boxster S has been enlarged from 3.2 to 3.4 liters, and now develops 295 horsepower at 6250 rpm - 15 horsepower more than its predecessor. Torque has also swelled 15 lb.-ft., to 251 lb.-ft. The Boxster S sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds (0-100 km/h, 5.4 sec.) - a tenth of a second quicker than the previous model. This open sports car's top test-track speed has risen 2 mph to 169 mph (272 km/h). This heady performance comes at little cost to efficiency, as the Boxster S manages a city/hwy fuel-economy rating of 20/28 MPG with the standard six-speed transmission.

The 2.7-liter Boxster engine now develops an additional 5 horsepower, bringing peak output to 245 horsepower. Torque has also increased, from 199 to 201 lb.-ft., peaking 100 rpm earlier with a broad torque plateau from 4600 to 6000 rpm. With the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the '07 Boxster accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds (0-100 km/h, 6.1 sec.), and has a top test-track speed of 160 mph (258 km/h). With the optional six-speed manual gearbox, top test-track speed increases to 162 mph (260 km/h). Fuel economy on the Boxster model is particularly impressive. With the standard 5-speed manual transmission, it achieves a city/hwy rating of 23/32 MPG.

For 2007, the Boxster and Boxster S can be optioned with the revised Tiptronic S transmission, which features new hydraulics and electronics to improve responsiveness, and also provides variable shift programs. Combined with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the sporting characteristics of both these mid-engined roadsters are enhanced. With the Sport mode engaged, up- and downshifts are only made at engine speeds above 3000 rpm, and downshifts for engine braking are subject to less delay and take place at higher engine speeds. In the manual-shift mode, up-shifts are not made automatically when the engine reaches its rev limiter.

It has 910 hp and 910 Nm, takes only 3.10 seconds from 0 to 100km/h and offers a top speed of 392km/h made possible by the modified double-clutch gearbox that goes with it. In the form of a convertible, with unbelievable 780hp resulting in 381km/h, it holds the absolute world record since October 2006. A supercar polished up Right, it must be a Porsche. But not just an ordinary one, no, it is the new Porsche 911 Turbo TRC 91 created by Nardo God 9ff. The artists from Dortmund turned the already extremely sporty bolide into one of the fastest and most powerful street-legal sports cars around the globe. The supercar‘s 3.6 litre biturbo ‚boxer‘ engine was modified in great detail. Not only two special turbochargers increase the performance, but also the sport air filter, larger injectors, modified cylinder heads and a stainless steel exhaust system with special manifolds as well as high-performance catalysts, and, finally, an extensive increase in engine displacement resulting in 4.0 litres. All modifications are perfectly harmonised by means of the reprogrammed engine control unit.

The experts at 9ff confined themselves to a slightly lower front apron and elegant 20-inch wheels with a larger braking system. New and shapely front spoilers, side skirts and redesigned rear wings add to the aerodynamic kit while the elegant and aerodynamically enhanced exterior mirrors are the crowning glory of the whole.

To sum it up, the 9ff Turbo TRC 91 was made for those among us who are real gentlemen - it is a decent horsepower werewolf.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster

Mercedes-Benz said the finicky crowd at the Festival of Speed here had "an extremely positive reaction" to the unveiling of its new supercar, the SLR McLaren Roadster. The Roadster goes on sale in September.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 2Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 3Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 4To celebrate the festivities, the German automaker released a fresh batch of photos of the supercar, which sprints from zero to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 207 mph.

The SLR McLaren Roadster tackled the legendary hill-climb circuit six times during a weekend marked by a downpour of torrential rain as well as blue skies. The SLR McLaren Roadster is powered by a handmade AMG 5.5-liter supercharged V8 that kicks out 626 horses and 575 pound-feet of torque.

The SLR McLaren Roadster will be built at McLaren's Formula 1 factory in nearby Woking, England.

Jaguar powered by apples

So we've seen cars powered by burger grease, orange juice, hemp and something called Jatropha Curcas seeds. Nope, still don't know what they are.

But what about rotting apples? In a move as selfless as it is eco-friendly, Somerset farmer Henry Hobson has converted his Jaguar XJ6 to run off methane produced from the decomposing fruit in his orchard.

Jaguar powered by applesThe science is simple enough: Hobson fills two underground tanks with apples from his 10,000-tree orchard, and adds a soupcon of bacteria from cows' intestines (yes, seriously) to help the rotting along.

The gas emitted from the decomposition is filtered through water to remove the sulphur and carbon dioxide, leaving Hobson with lots of lovely pure methane. And lots of lovely cheap fuel.

Hobson reckons that - discounting the £3,000 it cost to convert his Jag - he saves more than two grand every year on fuel costs. And as an added bonus, the big ol' XJ6 is putting out about 10 per cent more power at very similar fuel economy to before.

So is apple-power the future? Hobson maintains that methane is 10 times more efficient to produce than bio-diesel. And, as well as presumably filling the air with the sweet smell of home-brew, his fuel has the advantage of keeping the doctor well away.

Now, if only we could harness all that methane that our cows produce. Volunteers, anyone?

Pagani Zonda

If you're in the market for a Pagani Zonda F, you'd better be quick because the last few are up for grabs.

The final five Zonda F Roadsters have still to find homes, but after that it's all over for road-going Zondas... for now at least.

Pagani ZondaMemorable for so many reasons - not least for scaring the Hamster witless on twisty French country lanes - the Zonda is one of the few supercar dreams to have made it into reality.

And not a bad reality either, thanks to that Mercedes-sourced 7.3-litre V12 and styling that looks like it fell from Mars.

Still, it's not all bad news because Pagani is planning a Zonda F track car, although you'll need the thick end of £500,000 to put one in your garage.

Pagani is playing close to its chest with details, but expect more than 700bhp, a stripped-out cabin and a 220mph top speed when the car goes on sale in 2008. Oh, and a seriously limited production run.

There's also word on a fresh road-going Pagani arriving in 2008. It won't be another Zonda, and it might just get an eight-litre V12. More details when we get them...

2007 Alfa Romeo Alfa 147 Murphy&Nye

Launch of the Alfa 147 Murphy&Nye

On June 9 and 10 the public will be able to examine and try out the Alfa 147 Murphy&Nye, the new version that has resulted from collaboration between Alfa Romeo and the company famous for its brand of nautical clothing and sportswear designed for the racing world.

2007 Alfa Romeo Alfa 1472007 Alfa Romeo Alfa 147 22007 Alfa Romeo Alfa 147 3Powered by the sparkling 120 bhp 1.9 JTDM, the car has exclusive Light blue Crystal bodywork, 17” alloys and a chrome-plated exhaust terminal. The grille, whiskers and wing mirrors all have the same satin-effect finish, while the Murphy&Nye logo, a name of great distinction in the yachting world, decorates the pillar and rear end.

Inside, the sporty effect is even more refined, underlined by an original leitmotiv that links the car world to the world of yachts. The result is a blue and cream colour combination that lightens the interior, sporty leather seats with blue side strips and a cream seat, and the Alfa logo embroidered in red on the head restraints. The red coulisse on the gaiters of the gear lever and hand brake knobs and on the document pockets of the seats gives an extra touch of refinement. The kick-panels decorated with the M&N logo and the rope and frogging pattern on the mats underline the bond between this 147 and the sailing world. There is a generous range of M&N accessories that includes a large bag, a key-ring and a document folder with the company logo. Standard equipment on the Alfa 147 Murphy&Nye also includes foglights, dual zone automatic climate control, Cruise Control, a trip computer, VDC, ASR, 6 airbags and a radio complete with CD player and 6 speakers.

Available with a 5-door body and a list price of ¤ 24.690 on the road, the Alfa 147 Murphy&Nye perfectly embodies the values shared by the two companies: a passion for racing, for a challenge and for freedom. Alfa Romeo models have always combined unique, typically Italian style, with a high technological content, at the top of their class for performance and capable of guaranteeing strong emotions, an exciting drive and total safety. Murphy&Nye similarly boasts a long tradition in the yachting world. Its years of experience began with sail production before they moved on to the creation of technical clothing designed and made for the racing world, constantly experimenting with new hi-tech fabrics.

2007 Brabus B63 S for Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG Models

Even more power for all Mercedes 63 AMG models: BRABUS ( http://www.brabus.com/ ) presents its B63 S engine tuning, which boosts power output of the high-revving 6.2-liter V8 to 550 hp / 404 kW and peak torque to 650 Nm. With a sprint time from rest to 100 km/h of just 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 330 km/h a CLS 63 AMG with B63 S tuning turns in performance worthy of a true super sports car.

2007 Brabus B63 S Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG2007 Brabus B63 S Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG 22007 Brabus B63 S Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG 3The BRABUS power kit comprises newly programmed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition. But that’s not all: The intake side features a sport air filter for improved supply of combustion air. The exhaust side features high-performance metal catalysts with low back pressure that also ensure that the tuned V8 engine meets stringent EURO IV emission limits.

In order to transfer the increased power to the road with minimum slip BRABUS recommends the BRABUS locking differential for all Mercedes 63 models with rear wheel drive. The diff lock has a locking rate of up to 40 percent.

The BRABUS B63 S performance kit is available for all Mercedes 63 AMG models. With 550 hp / 404 kW the ML 63 accelerates in 4.9 seconds from 0 -100 km/h and reaches a top speed of 275 km/h in combination with the BRABUS V/max unit.

This extraordinary performance represents a good argument for modifications to tires, suspension and brakes. Depending on the Mercedes 63 AMG model in question BRABUS offers custom-tailored tire/wheel combinations up to size 11Jx23 with tires up to 315/25 R 23 in size. To further improve the already excellent handling characteristics BRABUS has developed a control module for the ABC suspensions that lowers the ride height by some 20 millimeters. BRABUS sport stabilizers reduce body roll and optimize turn-in.

The BRABUS high-performance brake system offers stopping power and endurance normally only found in purebred sports cars. It is available for all Mercedes 63 AMG models, upon customer request even in a special version with ceramic discs. The front axle features 380 x 36 millimeter discs and 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers. The rear axle is fitted with six-piston fixed calipers and 355 x 28 mm brake discs.

The list of BRABUS exclusive interior accessories ranges from genuine carbon-fiber trim and scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo to ergonomically shaped sport steering wheels and a speedometer with 360-km/h dial.

Upon customer request the company-own upholstery shop crafts especially exclusive BRABUS interiors from a combination of especially soft yet highly durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara.

Rolls-Royce

Not content with taking over British football teams, the Russian millionaires are out to snag our finest cars, too.

Rolls-Royce has just opened a shiny new showroom in St Petersburg to cater to all the newly made Russian millionaires with roubles burning holes in their pockets.

"There are lots of entrepreneurs in Russia who've made their fortunes under the new regime, and they like to celebrate their success by enjoying the best things in life," said Graham Biggs of Rolls-Royce.

A blatant plug, yes, but having recently driven the Rolls Drophead Coupe we're in no position to argue.

However, with Rolls producing its car masterpieces (carsterpieces? No?) in such small scale, are we Brits - well, those with 300-odd grand to spare - going to miss out?

"Plenty of Russians have already put in an order for the Drophead," said Biggs. "But the number of cars we're expecting to sell from St Petersburg is only in the tens each year."

And if it wasn't enough that some Russian oligarch might gazump you on your Roller, beware the Chinese too.

Biggs reckons demand for Rolls-Royces in China is second only to the US, with the company opening showrooms in the People's Republic about as quickly as, well, they build cars.

So if you're in the market for a new Roller, good luck to you. It might be easier to buy yourself a football team.

Ferrari 612 Sessanta

At the climactic ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Ferrari, company President Luca di Montezemolo rolled out a special piece of hardware: the limited-edition 612 Scaglietti Sessanta.

Ferrari 612 SessantaFerrari 612 Sessanta 2The Sessanta (Italian for "60") is being produced in a modest run of 60 cars, each carrying one of 60 symbols that represent significant moments in Ferrari history.

In observing the 1947 founding of the fabled marque, di Montezemolo said, "We celebrate 60 years of work, extraordinary moments, joyful moments and less joyful ones. ...We have always tried to look ahead, but without ever losing sight of Enzo Ferrari's heritage. We are selling dreams, full of technology and innovation, which are also the fruit of craftsmanship, with the special capacity to transmit emotion and passion."

The car itself is something special: Based on the 612 Scaglietti, the Sessanta borrows such innovations as the three-position electrochromic roof from the Superamerica as well as such luxury amenities as a full leather cockpit by Frau. It will be offered in only two colors: Grigio Scuro (dark gray) and Rubino Micalizzato.

All cars will come with Ferrari's F1 gearbox, unique 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels and black-chrome exhaust pipes, as well as Sessanta anniversary badging on the flanks. The steering wheel features an engine start/stop button, and the gauge cluster is unique to the car. Even the trunk is upholstered in leather.

Additional goodies include a Bose media system, a rear parking camera and a TV tuner (presumably for watching reruns of The Sopranos).

2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle

Chrysler Akino Concept Redefines Luxury and Spaciousness

The unique and artistically sculptured appearance of the Chrysler Akino concept vehicle and its one-box, compact size certainly turns heads. However, after the fifth person settles comfortably into the vehicle, one clearly gets the idea there is more to this concept than meets the eye.

2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 22005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 32005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 42005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 5"Our job as designers is to push the boundaries of conventional thinking, said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group. "On this project we imagined a new small super-efficient powertrain that allows freedom for the designer to create a new solution for future transportation."

Design
The vehicle name comes from Interior and Exterior Designer, Akino Tsuchiya, a 37-year-old who was born in Japan and is based at the Chrysler Group's Pacifica Design Studios in Carlsbad, California. The meaning of the name Akino is "autumn field." The feeling of serenity that is evoked with these words is a theme present throughout the vehicles design.

"I wanted the soothing, comforting feeling of a living room on the interior all surrounded by an elegant form that reflects the Chrysler brand," Tsuchiya said of her concept vehicle revealed at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. "We very much wanted a feeling of being at home on the road." Tsuchiya added that for those in Japan, driving on a weekend or free time is an experience of being together such as through family outings or traveling with friends.

Oasis
The Chrysler Akino concept has a single door on the driver side, and two doors on the passenger side that open in opposite directions. This arrangement allows the interior to have a booth-like rear seat with a swiveling passenger seat. The roof features an unusual interlocking form toward the rear which punctuates the design and provides more headroom for the rear seat passengers.

"In the Chrysler Group, we take pride in employing the best designers in the industry," said Joe Eberhardt, Executive Vice President Global Sales Marketing and Service. "The fresh thinking and diversity in our design team enables us to develop vehicles that answer the specific demands of the varied world markets in which we operate. While the Chrysler Akino may be a concept at this stage, it shows how we can meet the rational needs of customers in our international markets, while infusing the product with all the emotion of the Chrysler brand," he said.

According to Tsuchiya, the unique seating configuration provides an oasis which is designed for a safe, comfortable and social environment to experience travel on an entirely new level.

Nature
The selection of materials and colors used in the interior are composed of natural and recyclable synthetic fabrics: bamboo flooring, a throw rug, lighting sconce, mood lighting and even throw pillows.

The driver and passenger front seats are treated like arm chairs and the rear seat like that of a sofa in a traditional living room setting. Color is used to separate the working space from the living room area also – a Salon Blue Suede in the driver and cockpit area with a Cream Suede on the passenger and rear seat surfaces with a similarly colored lower door trim.

Function
The exterior features a side glass that has an unusual graphic breakup while the rear glass is specially coated with texture to give passengers a sense of privacy and comfort.

"We wanted an artful, sculptural and graceful form that was influenced by artwork and architecture," Tsuchiya said. "Refinement is at the heart of the Chrysler brand. The combination of those brand attributes and artistic grace helped us to bring much of the home into the automobile."

Gumpert Apollo

You know that old chestnut about F1 cars generating enough downforce to be able to drive on the ceiling?

Well, this theory so beguiled former Audi engineer Roland Gumpert that he used it as the guiding principle on which to build his supercar.

Gumpert ApolloGumpert Apollo 2Gumpert Apollo 3Gumpert Apollo 4This is the daftly named Gumpert Apollo, the latest car to come knocking on the door of the exclusive supercar club.

A road-legal racer, the Apollo is designed with downforce in mind. Weighing in at just 1,100kg thanks to a carbon-fibre monocoque, the Apollo generates 1,500kg of downforce at 200mph - theoretically enabling it to drive upside down. We're not volunteering to test that theory though.

The speed comes from a twin-turbo version of the Audi RS4's 4.2-litre V8, producing 650bhp and 627lb ft of torque.

That's good for a top speed of 224mph, which would presumably be even higher if it wasn't for all the downforce.

There's more evidence of Audi's influence - though the German company didn't play a direct role in the Apollo's development, it does have subsequent patents on the car's development - in the gearbox: a six-speed sequential dual-clutch unit.

And although the cabin may look barer than a Page 3 model, Gumpert has found room for such creature comforts as satnav, air conditioning and a rear-mounted reversing camera.

Gumpert says the Apollo is production-ready, with starting prices in the region of £190,000. The only problem is that Tom Ford drove a pre-production Apollo almost two years ago, at which point Gumpert said the first models would be on the road by the end of 2005.

But although there are reports of a few Apollos knocking around Monaco and the like, we've still not been invited to drive one. It's enough to drive you up the wall... and onto the ceiling.

BMW M3 spotted

Want to see the new BMW M3?

Well, you'll have to wait until the first week of July, when BMW will formally show off its RS4-rattling supercoupe to us Brits.

new BMW M3 photonew BMW M3 photo 2new BMW M3 photo 3Unless you head down to the Canary Wharf Motor Expo with a good cover story and a nifty line in comedy disguises. See, the M3 isn't technically there: BMW's show car at the posh London party is the M6 Convertible. Boring.

But hidden in a back room, away from the view of the general public, is a pristine white M3. BMW is only showing it to prospective M3 customers or those who have already placed an order. Or persistent journalists, of course.

So, we urge you, head on down to Canary Wharf and badger BMW for a look at the M3. Partly because it'll serve 'em right for hiding it away but also because, technically, we're all prospective M3 buyers.

Maybe not for a few years or without a substantial windfall/bank error in the meantime, but that's the whole point in 'prospective', isn't it?

But you'll need to be quick: the Motor Expo finishes on Sunday. And if BMW won't let you into its secret chamber, there's always the Alfa 8C Competizione to keep you entertained. And the Bentley Brooklands. And the Audi R8.

And who knows what else you'll find hidden in the basement?

Celebrity Era Ends at Buick as Tiger Is Reassigned to OnStar

Saying that it no longer wants "a celebrity at the core of any brand," General Motors on Thursday said golf great Tiger Woods would now be used as a pitchman in companywide ads for products like OnStar instead of serving as the face of Buick.

Mark R. LaNeve, GM's vice president of North American sales, service and marketing, said the automaker will continue to use Woods in corporate-level marketing. "Tiger's a great asset," LaNeve said. "We can use him in lots of ways. Why shouldn't we use him in ways other than Buick?"

Woods, 31, has been a prominent part of Buick advertising since 1999. He reportedly has a five-year contract with the automaker worth $40 million that runs through 2009. But there has been widespread media criticism that the Woods/Buick association lacked credibility, especially since most Buick buyers are well into their 60s.

LaNeve said the new Buick strategy would be to sell the cars based on their own merits, not on their ties to celebrities such as Woods.

In addition to taking delivery of a new Buick Enclave CXL recently, Woods also drives a Buick Lucerne and several other GM vehicles.

First Drive: 2007 Alfa Romeo Spider

Alfa Romeo is the Quentin Tarantino of the automotive world. It's been years since either one made something really great, but their fans keep believing that another blockbuster hit is just around the corner.

Just as every Tarantino movie is greeted as the rightful heir to Pulp Fiction, so, too, every new Alfa Romeo Spider is expected to rekindle the spirit of the original Spider of the 1960s, which Dustin Hoffman made famous in The Graduate. There is something evocative about that famous badge and triangular grille that lifts even mediocre cars above the mainstream. Here in Europe, people really want Alfa Romeo to succeed.

The latest 2007 Alfa Spider is no different. When it was unveiled at the Geneva auto show in 2006, it was immediately named Cabrio of the Year, even though nobody outside the factory had driven it. This new Spider, the Alfisti whisper in hushed tones, will seduce a new generation of American customers.

In two years, you will be able to walk into a Maserati dealer in the U.S. and place an order for a 2010 Alfa Romeo Spider, which will celebrate the company's 100th anniversary. Should all of us begin singing La Traviata and sipping cappuccino in anticipation, or is this latest ragtop just another Alfa Romeo that flatters, only to deceive?

Labradoodle Styling

In some celebrity circles, the Labradoodle has become the must-have accessory. This unfortunate canine — a cross-breed of a Labrador retriever and a poodle — is now more expensive to buy than the pedigreed alternative. And like the Labradoodle, the new Alfa Spider has the look of a charming mongrel. Sensationally stylish, but a mongrel nevertheless.

The front of this Spider and its interior have been borrowed from the Alfa Romeo Brera, a handsome coupe styled by ItalDesign, the company made famous by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who has been responsible for cars as disparate as the De Tomaso Mangusta and the original Volkswagen Golf. The rear of the Spider, however, has been penned by Pininfarina, the company associated with Ferrari design.

It's a risky proposition, but like the Labradoodle, the result is strangely appealing. An aggressive snout that gives the car a permanent scowl manages to blend harmoniously with a voluptuous rear. The Spider looks just as you expect an Alfa Romeo should, like an Italianate sculpture with a faint spirit of menace. When it comes to America, this car should definitely turn some heads.

Practical Style for the Interior

The Spider shares its platform with the Brera coupe, and both have a 99.5-inch wheelbase. The convertible measures 173.0 inches from nose to tail and it's 72.0 inches wide. Although the coupe is a compact 2+2, the space behind the Spider's front seats is taken up by a small rear shelf incorporating two lockable cubbies, plus there's the electric-powered convertible top. There is also a good-size trunk, making the Spider a sensible tool for everyday use.

The bulky instrument fascia angles toward the driver in the traditional Alfa style and focuses the eye on a series of circular pods. For smaller drivers, it might all seem a bit imposing, but at least it asserts its own identity. The driving position is good and the leather-wrapped seats offer decent long-distance comfort.

In days gone by, Alfa cabins were put together with all the integrity of an origami giraffe, but in recent years, the company has taken a giant stride forward when it comes to quality. Some of the ergonomics are still a tad curious (the stereo in our test car is outrageously fiddly) but the fit and finish looks good. The interior of the Alfa Spider makes you think this car might just last long enough to become a classic, something no Italian-made convertible in this price class has done in decades.

Here's What Alfa Romeo Has Always Gotten Right

Even in the company's darkest days, Alfa always made great engines, and those fitted to the Spider are no exception. Here in Britain, the Spider is offered with three engines: a 181-horsepower 2.2-liter inline-4, a turbocharged 2.4-liter 196-hp diesel inline-4 and a 256-hp 3.2-liter V6. The last is the engine that's most likely to come to the U.S.

This all-aluminum DOHC V6 with a 24-valve cylinder head and continuously variable valve timing debuted in Alfa's 159 sedan last year. It's called the JTS V6, which stands for Jet Thrust Stoichiometric, Alfa-speak for direct fuel injection. The net product of all this technical trickery is an engine that develops 256 hp at 6,300 rpm and some 237 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. That's enough power to get the Spider to 60 mph in a tick less than 7.0 seconds on its way to a top speed of 149 mph.

The Spider weighs in at 3,726 pounds, and it's all this weight that leads us to describe the Spider's performance as pleasantly brisk rather than searingly quick. The Spider also guzzles gas. Even so, the V6 sounds magnificent, with a rich melody reminiscent of Alfa's engines of old.

Here's the Disappointing Bit

Let's get straight to the point. The Spider is not a sports car — not even close. This car is half as stiff as the Brera coupe, and on any road surface that's less than perfect, it shakes like an alcoholic in rehab. You can feel it through the steering wheel, through the seats and even through the trim. We'll admit that the Spider feels better than a touring sort of car like the Volvo C70, but it's not good enough for a sports car.

Alfa has wisely decided not to risk trying to put 260 hp through the Spider's front wheels, so all-wheel drive is standard. The Alfa Romeo Q4 system uses a Torsen differential to distribute torque between the front and rear wheels. Normally the split is 43 percent front/57 percent rear, but the system adapts to any wheel slip and can deliver as much as 72 percent of power to the front wheels or 78 percent to the rear.

There's certainly no shortage of grip and the steering is pleasingly direct, but this is not a car to hustle. It's at its best on highways, or through long, sweeping corners, where it can be allowed to settle its weight and work its 225/50R17 tires. At least the ride is supple and it should be adequate on U.S. highways. But the Alfa Romeo Spider is nothing like the Nissan 350Z roadster that it resembles in specification, so hard-core enthusiasts should look elsewhere.

Perhaps Alfa has spent too much time trying to come up with a shape that can rival the Audi TT roadster and BMW Z4, when it should have focused a little more on driving performance. Even the shift action of the six-speed manual transmission feels slightly clunky (an automatic transmission is optional), and the brakes could stand more initial bite and more feel. You will enjoy being in the Alfa for the sound and the style, but not for the speed.

Dear Quentin, What Happened?

In many ways, the Spider is a classic Alfa Romeo. Objectively speaking, this car is not a match for the BMW Z4 or the Nissan 350Z, yet it has more panache than both. The 2007 Alfa Romeo Spider is a car that you will either dismiss out of hand as a triumph of style over substance, or fall in love with, warts and all.

Me? I'll take mine in red.

Brazil built Ford compact to be sold in US

Mazda_2_03_1.jpg

Similar to the deal in which Chrysler plans to source a new low-cost minicar from China’s Chery Auto to be sold in North America, Ford too will import a new model to the US, this time built in Brazil. The information comes from parts suppliers, who also revealed to Wards Auto that production is tipped to start in late 2009.

The car will be a new B-segment model based on the Mazda2 platform. On sale by early 2010, the source reveals that Ford is expecting to import between 50,000 and 100,000 units annually.

Auto industry analyst Paulo Cardamone from CSM Worldwide, explains that Brazil beat out Mexico for the contract to build the new car, which “will be targeted only for export.” According to Ford CEO Alan Mulally, the final production version will debut at next year’s Geneva Motor Show, however, a concept version is rumored to make a showing at either the Frankfurt or Detroit shows.

After establishing his company Fisker Coachbuild in sunny California back in 2005, former Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker has delivered his first car at a ceremony at the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills. The car in question is a 2007 Fisker Latigo CS V10 coupe, number one out of an exclusive run of just 150 cars.

The Latigo line of cars is based on the BMW 6-series family, with the CS V10 model running on the mechanicals of a donor M6. Power levels have been boosted to 648hp, which enables the super-coupe to reach 60mph from rest in just 3.9 seconds.

The range starts with a $199,000 V8 model based on the BMW 650Ci, which has 367hp on tap, and tops out with the $304,000 Latigo CS V10 Convertible. Fisker also produces a second model, the Tramonto, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG.

Ferrari Dino design study

ferrari_dino_render_main.jpg

Ferrari is yet to reveal whether or not the entry-level Dino has even been confirmed for production but that hasn’t stopped one enthusiast from creating his own design for the car. The Ferrari Dino Concept design was penned by Ugur Sahin, whose goal was to create a car that feels stylish, modern, dynamic and organic while staying true to the original design language of the Ferrari Dino and Ferrari brand in general.

Early reports suggest that we may see a production Dino by 2010, and Germany’s AutoZeitung has speculated that some form of the car will be displayed at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Previously, Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo revealed that a new car based on the F430 will be in Frankfurt, however, this could simply be the F430 Challenge Stradale.

If built, the Dino would likely feature a mid-mounted V8 engine displacing in the vicinity of 4.0L and an aluminum chassis. Power levels should be upwards of 400hp, with drive sent to the rear wheels via an F1-style gearbox. Follow the jump for our complete gallery of Dino renderings.

Preview of Ferrari’s future technology

599_GTB_red_118.jpg

Ferrari has just published an extensive document outlining the future technologies that are set to appear in both its road-going and F1 race cars. It’s part of an official presentation that’s going down in Maranello today, where the eco-friendly FXX Millechili concept car has just been announced.

As always the main pursuit of Ferrari’s engineers is performance, but efficiency is quickly becoming a new driver for innovation within the Prancing Horse label. Some of the elements that will be affecting future Ferrari designs include drag-force reduction, weight reduction, and more fuel-efficient engines, biofuel capable models and even hybrid-electric cars.

Some of the new technologies we’ll see implemented range from more use of carbon-fiber, low-rolling resistance tires, wind-tunnel simulations for road cars, hydraulic and electric actuators replacing mechanical parts, smaller electronic components and more effective underbody diffusers.

In the long-term, Ferrari is looking towards hybrid options to improve the efficiency and performance of its cars. Engineers are now studying the use of electric motors attached to the gearbox as seen in this diagram of the F430’s transmission.

1650 smart fortwo being recalled

Smart got into trouble! 1650 Fortwo models are being recalled due to steering problems. All the models were built between May 19 and June 6th 2007.

All the customers will have to take their vehicles to their local dealers to repair the problem, as the drivers may not be able to steer the car properly. The actual problem lies with a retaining ring that the US manufacturer, Delphi, failed to properly install.

Chrysler Phoenix V6 to feature cylinder deactivation

CH007_005AS_01.jpg

Chrysler has announced the adoption of a range of new fuel-saving technologies to improve mileage rates of its vehicles. The major news is the development of a family of V6 engines with cylinder deactivation technology, similar to GM’s displacement on demand. This means that three cylinders can be turned off by the engine during low load situations, such as cruising on a highway, thus saving fuel. Associated Press reports that this could improve fuel-economy by 6 to 8%.

Other initiatives include the introduction of two-mode hybrid powertrains in more vehicles, more efficient drivetrains and new clean-diesel motors. The two-mode hybrid system will first appear in the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango models, and is claimed to improve fuel-economy by up to 40% in the city.

Chrysler is also investigating the possibility of a range of new four-cylinder powerplants for North America, as well as the addition of new fuel-efficient dual-clutch gearboxes by 2010.

Finally, Chrysler has also revealed that it will offer “mild hybrid” powertrains for some vehicles within the next couple of years, a system that will allow an engine to shutdown when a car is stuck in traffic or at a stop light.

Impounded Dodge Viper turned into cop car

dodge_viper01.jpg

A man charged with doing 127mph in a 35 zone in Illinois has had his car turned over to local police, who have subsequently converted it into a patrol car. The car in question is a black 2000 model-year Dodge Viper with a cognac leather interior. Since joining the police fleet, the Viper has been given a new black and white paintjob and fitted with a siren and lights.

The car been enlisted into the police’s D.A.R.E. unit and will be used at community events, block parties, parades and schools, reports the Herald News.

The reason for the harsh penalty is not only because of speeding, but because police had to chase the driver, who continued to swerve through traffic and attempted to hide in a parking lot.

While being fingerprinted, the driver requested that the car be stored under shelter because of its like-new condition. Little did he know that he was about to lose the keys to his pride and joy.

Renault developing new Laguna coupe

Fluence_Renault_concept01.jpg

Renault is close to finalizing the design for a new coupe version of its recently revealed Laguna. The new two-door will be launched roughly 12 months after the introduction of the sedan and estate models, and will round out the lineup as the carmaker’s new flagship.

Styling will be heavily influenced by the Fluence concept (pictured) that was unveiled back in 2004. Measuring close to 4.7m in length, the new coupe will be a genuine 2+2 GT and its interior will be lifted directly out of the sedan.

Like the Fluence concept, the new Laguna coupe will likely feature a Nissan-sourced V6 powerplant for the range topper, with four-cylinder petrol and several diesel engines available for less expensive versions. Renault will offer both a six-speed manual and six-speed auto as options for the transmission.

Some of the goodies carried over from the sedan will include an electric handbrake, remote engine starting, and xenon lights, plus uprated suspension, increased sound-proofing and a closer-ratio steering set-up.

Ferrari and the Greener Future

Details have started to emerge regarding Ferrari's new eco-friendly concept vehicle, the FXX Mille Chile. Ferrari, like other high performance vehicle manufacturers, realize that it needs to develop and introduce new technologies in order to keep selling its high-performance brand of vehicles. Ferrari has been working on many of these technologies and is showing them off on its latest concept. It's important to note that this is merely a paper and wood concept and is not slated for production. It also does not appear to have anything to do with the Millechili concept from 2005.

New technologies introduced to the public on the Millechili concept include active aerodynamics, a new type of hybrid drivetrain, adjustable steering wheel and pedal placement and high-tech (and high-cost) carbon fiber construction. Also seeing daylight are low rolling resistance tires and ceramic composite brakes. Many of these technologies have been done before, but not with quite the same intent as what Ferrari is doing.

With active aerodynamics, vehicle manufacturers have been able to add or reduce downforce as required. The Bugatti Veyron is a good example of this. But, Ferrari is changing things up a bit by reducing the size of its ceramic composite brakes and using underbody modifications to lower the speed of the car. Also, the hybrid system is different than what we are used to. Instead of being able to power the vehicle, the electric motor only seems to activate while the vehicle is being shifted. This means that an almost seamless stream of torque is routed to the wheels, even when the clutch is disengaging the engine from the transmission. Speaking of that transmission, it appears to retain the F1 style paddle shifting, but the hybrid system makes shifting faster than ever.

VE Commodore 4 Star ANCAP Rating

At the launch of the VE Commodore in July last year, Holden management were quick to point out that more than a billion Aussie dollars were sunk into developing GM's new global RWD architecture, and that thousands of miles of testing were conducted for the latest version of Australia's most popular car.

Holden is now on the back foot following the four-star crash test rating its VE scored in last week's Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), the local equivalent of the Euro NCAP and America's NHTSA crash test ratings. The latest result means the all-new Commodore is no safer than the previous VY model released back in May 2003. Worse still, in some cases, such as the offset impact test, the new VE was rated less safe than the previous car.
Holden's official response is that the ANCAP doesn't represent real-world conditions, and that 80 cars were crash-tested during the VE's development in addition to more than 5,000 computer-simulated barrier tests. When questioned about the poor result by Australia's GoAuto, Holden chairman Denny Mooney could only respond that he didn't have the test data in front of him. Remember, this is the same platform that GM's RWD ambitions are riding on. It's the same basic structure that will spawn a host of new models including the Camaro and Impala, and the car is already coming to the US as the Pontiac G8, so there's a great deal riding on it.

2008 Ford Taurus Aims to Sell with Safety

The new Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are rated the safest full-size sedans in America based on crash test ratings, but can safety sell a vehicle?

Absolutely, says Mark O’Brien, president and general manager of Roy O’Brien Ford in St. Clair Shores, Mich.

"When it comes to choosing between our Ford cars, a foreign car or another domestic vehicle that all have a certain visual appeal, customers do ask the pointed question, 'What's the crash rating on this car?' " said O'Brien, whose family dealership has been selling Ford cars and trucks since 1946.

O’Brien says that historically, it was predominantly mothers asking questions about safety but today, safety is a concern for many car buyers.

"It's not just the moms anymore," he said. "I think it's starting to filter through all society now because today's consumers have a lot of choices. So why not choose a vehicle that will save you if you have an accident."

According to a survey conducted earlier this year by Consumer Reports, seven in 10 customers consider safety to be one of the most important factors to consider when evaluating a new car.

Ford studies support those findings, according to Ed Molchany, Ford Division communications manager.

"We've done a great deal of research to determine what factors drive overall brand opinion, and safety is definitely one of them," he said.

Molchany says that while most people expect cars to be safe, there is still an opportunity to stand out from the competition with vehicles like the new Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. Both vehicles earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick rating and the U.S. government’s highest available five-star ratings in all crash test categories.

"When you know safety is one of the key pillars that drive opinion and you can lay claim to being the safest, that's not only going to help us sell Ford Tauruses and Mercury Sables, it's going to help the entire Ford brand," said Molchany.

According to Robert Parker, Ford Division car marketing manager, safety is at the heart of the recently launched print and television ads for the new Ford Taurus.

"We're going to beat the safety drum as loudly as we can and get out there with the message that Ford Taurus is rated America's safest sedan," he said.

The 2008 Mercury Sable will be launched later this summer, but the new Taurus has already begun arriving in dealerships throughout the country.

Mark O'Brien says his dealership received its first Ford Taurus last week.

"It was sold before it even arrived," he said. "The questions that people had about the Ford Five Hundred regarding its power and styling have all been answered with the new Ford Taurus. If you combine that with the class-leading safety of the vehicle, I think we've got a one-two punch here that’s going to be pretty hard to beat."

Video: The $5 Million Dollar Modified ENZO FERRARI

New York Hedge Fund manager and movie director Jim Glickenhaus liked the 330 P3/4-era Ferraris so much that he took his Enzo out to Turin, Italy, to recreate the classic cars based on state-of-the-art technology. The entire upgrade cost $4 million USD on top of the $1 million USD sticker price of the Enzo = $5 million USD Ferrari P4/5. Yes, quite NUTS.

Among the upgrades include a complete overhaul of the body, redesigned and rebuilt by Pininfarina, 20′ wheels wrapped in fatter yet thinner tires, custom-made fabric picked out by his hot spoiled daughter, and a raised “cut line” to allow for easier access to the monster living underneath the hood.

Apparently Ferrari liked the overhaul so much that they approved badging the vehicle as a bona fide Ferrari. This is unconfirmed and highly skeptical if you ask me.

STARTECH Refines the New Jeep Wrangler

STARTECH Refines the New Jeep. Wrangler

Legends are immortal and in the automotive world that is especially true for the Jeep. Wrangler, the 'mother' of all off-road vehicles. To customize the latest version of the American 4x4 and to make it even more exclusive STARTECH (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 20 41 / 777 547, fax + 49 / (0) 20 41 / 777 111, Internet www.startech.de ) is developing an innovative and exclusive accessories program - for the short wheelbase and the new long wheelbase version.

In a first step STARTECH offers custom-tailored light-alloy wheels, some initial exterior modifications and exclusive interior options.

The polished STARTECH Monostar IV 9Jx20 light-alloy wheels attract attention at first sight. The striking five-spoke wheels lend the new Jeep. Wrangler a more exclusive appearance. But that's not all: Mounted with sporty on- and off-road tires in size 285/50 R 20 front and back they give the SUV even more agile handling characteristics while at the same time improving driving safety.

While the STARTECH design program for the new Wrangler is still under development, the first stainless-steel components will be available shortly. Sturdy tubular side guards for short and long wheelbase models protect the rocker panels of the Jeep and partially hide the Jeep's frame from view. The spare wheel cover with high-gloss stainless-steel ring adds the finishing touch.

The new Wrangler generation for the first time includes a model with diesel engine. The STARTECH motor engineers are currently developing the STARTECH SD 4T tuning module for the 2.8-liter (171 cu. in.) common-rail turbodiesel engine.

STARTECH sport exhausts will soon be available for all engine and body variants of the Jeep. The fully stainless-steel exhausts feature one characteristic oval chrome tailpipe each on the right and left, and produce a more sonorous engine sound, while at the same time optimizing power yield.

The interior of the Jeep can also be upgraded stylishly with STARTECH accessories: Highly polished scuff plates welcome driver and passengers, and the ergonomically shaped STARTECH sport steering wheel adds to the ambiance.

Additional customization requests can be fulfilled by the company-own STARTECH upholstery shop. Partial and fully leather interiors made from especially soft yet durable Mastik leather satisfy even the most discriminating tastes.

Ford Drops Top On 2008 Shelby GT

FORD SHELBY GT DROPS ITS TOP FOR 2008 MODEL YEAR

* New convertible version of the Ford Shelby GT available beginning this summer
* New signature Vista Blue exterior with Shelby GT Silver stripes
* Production of 2008 Shelby GT aimed at 2,300 to assure exclusivity for collectors
* Ford Mustang is America's top-selling convertible

DEARBORN, Mich., June 13, 2007 - The magic duo of Ford Mustang and Carroll Shelby bring open-air excitement to the road for the 2008 model year as the Ford Shelby GT returns with a new convertible body style and a new standard color combination. Like all Shelby Mustang models, production will be limited to assure exclusivity for collectors. The 2008 Shelby GT will be available in coupe and convertible from select Ford dealers beginning in August 2007.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT convertible will be formally introduced to Shelby and Ford enthusiasts at the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet, which opens today in Tulsa, Okla.

"The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first," said Carroll Shelby. "Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that's tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don't will be left behind staring at its tailpipes."

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing joined forces to create a retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe called the Shelby GT. Fewer than 6,000 total 2007 Shelby GTs were built and were only available in Performance White or Black.

For 2008, the highly-coveted Shelby GT is available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible.

"The Mustang convertible is the number one selling convertible in the U.S.," states Robert Parker, Ford Division Car Marketing Manager. "Since t he Mustang program never stands still, we wanted to continue offering consumers what they want, and they told us it was a Ford Mustang Shelby GT convertible. "

Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide.

"The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year," said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. "The enormous response to the Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008."

Every Shelby GT is built to perform and is the result of extensive development. Aerodynamics were key to sculpting t he powerful, unique front fascia with aggressive lower air dam. The hood scoop comes directly from the famed Shelby Cobra roadster while unique side scoops are positioned just before the rear wheel arches. The rear fascia frames dual exhaust tips and a Shelby badge is on the trunk lid.

"The partnership between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustang's ever built," said Jamie Allison, manager of the Ford Racing Performance Group. "Ford Racing has a full line of performance parts for Mustang enthusiasts. The Shelby GT convertible is another example of how working together, Shelby and Ford Racing are developing, producing and delivering niche performance Mustangs directly to the customer."

Under the hood, the engine is upgraded with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Package to increase output of the 4.6-liter V-8 to 319 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. A high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. Shelby GT comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission featuring a Hurst short-throw shifter for precise shift action. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The balanced package includes a Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, unique sway bars and a 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for improved off-the-line acceleration. The overall ride height was dropped to reduce body roll while a front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure.

The 2008 models will sport 18-inch polished wheels with high-performance P235/50ZR18 BF Goodrich gForce tires to maximize the upgrades. Like all Mustang convertibles, each drop top will have supplemental bracing to give the car additional stiffness and the Shelby team will add a stylish light bar.

"The Shelby GT is for drivers," says Boylan. "We enhanced the motor, the chassis and other bits to make it a fun, balanced car that is equally at home on the street or track. It's easy to drive, very fast and offers great value for the price."

Approximately 2,300 2008 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built, available with manual or automatic transmission. Each car will feature an authentication plate on the center dashboard, as well as a matching tag under the hood for documentation in a forthcoming registry. Shelby Automobiles production is scheduled to begin in August 2007.

Check your toupee: 9ff's 997 Turbo cabrio TRC 91

We can't imagine having 780 HP on tap in a convertible, but 9ff has realized the ridiculousness and created what's likely to be the fastest drop-top in the world. The German tuning haus has taken the 997 Porsche Turbo convertible, stroked the 3.6-liter six to four-liters, modified every conceivable part of the motor, all in an effort to reach a top speed of 237 MPH.

On the outside, the only thing that distinguishes the TRC 91 from its "sedate" ancestry is a set of 20-inch rollers, upgraded brakes, a revised front grille to increase airflow, a couple of aero bits and a trunk lid made entirely out of carbon fiber.

The 4.0-liter mill was actually de-tuned from the hardtop model, which creates 910 HP and 671 lb.-ft. of torque, and allows the rear-engined rocket to make it to 60 just after you count to three. Insanity. But it's our kind of madness.

2008 Ford Falcon Ute and XR6 Turbo Sprung!

Unlike Holden, Ford seems to be preparing their Falcon Utility to coincide with the release of their new model - codename Orion.

Our spy photographer has sprung the Falcon Ute during testing in an undisclosed location in Victoria’s bushy countryside. Although the photos aren’t quite crystal clear, there is an obvious indication that body size will remain similar to Ford’s currently successful utility range.

The model photographed seems to be a base model with tray attached. It’s also nice to see the Ute decked out with a big set of alloy wheels which - I would think - probably won’t be seen on the ready model.

Whilst waiting for the Ford Falcon Ute to come past, our sleuth photographer snapped off a few shots of a car we have seen before.

This time around, the car was much closer, revealing some more information about the vehicle’s shape and contours. The front end reveals new sculpting for the fog lights and also some humps on the bonnet…we’ll leave that to your imagination.

Many European vehicles are now fitted with Xenon headlights, it’s unclear whether the Falcon will also feature such a headlight treatment. One thing that is clear though is that the vehicle pictured below has several objects protruding from the headlight assembly, suggesting ad-hoc headlight washers (which are required as ADR for Xenon/HID headlights). And is that a carbon-fibre spoiler fitted to the vehicle pictured? You betch’ya. Will it make it to production? Probably not.

Insiders have informed us that the mold featured in the following photo is not representative of the tail-lights. Cladding has been employed to emboss the tail-light surrounding in a bid to throw off onlookers.

The front end close up shot suggests a new fog light arrangement and bonnet contours. The vehicle photographed is probably an XR6 Turbo variant. Our spy photographer has suggested that it was towing a trailer filled with cement and other heavy objects and had a noise reminiscent of the current turbocharged Falcon lineup.

And finally, the following picture clearly shows the outline of the window. It’s unclear why Ford went to such extremes to pad the C-pillar windows. This photo shots that nothing all too interesting is going on behind there. It is encouraging to see that the old AU rear door frame is gone. There were many complaints about the lack of ease getting in and out of Falcons from the AU - BF, this new door frame will hopefully rectify the issue.

Chevrolet Volt Concept Electrifies Toronto

The revolutionary Chevrolet Volt Concept made its Canadian debut today at the Energy and Environment Conference (EECO) in Toronto. The technologically-advanced and stylish Volt has the potential to virtually eliminate the need for daily commuters to visit a gas station.

"If you are like most Canadians who live and work within a 64 kilometre round trip the Chevy Volt is a gas free, emission free car,” says David Paterson, vice president, corporate and environmental affairs, General Motors of Canada. “Drivers will simply unplug and go each morning - much as we do with our cell phones today."

The Chevrolet Volt Concept electric vehicle can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours a day. When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the Volt can deliver 64 kilometres of pure electric vehicle range. If drivers need to travel more than 64 kilometres, a range extending power source (which creates electricity from gasoline, ethanol, hydrogen or biodiesel fuels) seamlessly kicks in to recharge the lithium ion battery pack when required, for an impressive driving range of more than 1,000 kilometres.

"At GM we believe that tomorrow’s automobile must be flexible to accommodate many different energy sources and choices for consumers, and a key part of that flexibility will be enabled by electrically driven cars" adds Paterson. "With battery contracts in place and a dedicated team of engineers, General Motors is moving to bring the Chevrolet Volt closer to reality."

The signing of advanced development battery contracts and our announcement to move fuel cell engineers from research and development work to our powertrain and engineering organizations for the E-Flex system are the latest proof points in GM's commitment to providing more green choices for consumers. Today GM offers:

o Canada’s most affordable hybrid SUV and mid-sedan - the Saturn Vue and Saturn Aura Green Line hybrids, and the Chevrolet Malibu hybrid, to be introduced later this year. GM has also announced two-mode hybrid versions of the new Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon arriving this fall and a two-mode hybrid version of the Oshawa-made Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups next year. GM’s new two-mode hybrid pickups will be the first hybrid vehicles ever built in Canada.

o GM is a world leader in the development of flex fuel vehicles that are capable of running on fuel containing up to 85 per cent ethanol (E85) or regular gasoline. Today 15 GM models are available with E85 Flex Fuel capability.

o GM is currently building the world’s largest fuel cell demonstration fleet at GM’s Canadian Engineering Centre in Oshawa, these 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell vehicles will be placed with customers this fall.

o Active Fuel Management (or AFM) engines are available on 15 of our most popular cars and trucks. AFM seamlessly shuts down half the engine’s cylinders to conserve fuel when they are not needed – such as when you are cruising on the highway.

o GM provides more vehicles that achieve 7L / 100 km highway than any other manufacturer in the Canada.

General Motors of Canada (GMCL) is engineering and manufacturing advanced environmental technologies ranging from Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and hybrid systems to E85 biofuel and fuel cell vehicles – more than any other auto company right here in Canada. Headquartered in Oshawa Ontario, GMCL employs more than 19,000 people nationwide. GM of Canada manufactures vehicles, vehicle powertrains, and markets the full range of General Motors vehicles and related services through 743 dealerships and retailers across Canada. Vehicles sold through this network include Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Cadillac.

Lancia Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign

The model in brief

Lancia Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign
Lancia Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign

The Lancia Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign makes its entrance, with the most powerful diesel engine in its class, a new version with a split personality (a dynamic look and innate elegance), which opens a new chapter in the collaboration between two brands that are famous throughout the world for their contribution to Italian industrial design.

Lancia and MomoDesign have created a very personal stylistic language which makes their creations stand out among so many mass-produced products. This is borne out, for example, by the exclusive items of clothing and accessories designed and developed by the MomoDesign Styling Centre: helmets, watches, sunglasses, shoes and leather goods. They are unique products in the fashion world, just as Lancia creations are unique in theirs. In this sense, the new Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign is an example of how an ‘automotive object’ can be reinterpreted from a stylistic viewpoint with another brand, highlighting the expressive features that have always distinguished Lancia: elegance and attitude.

With the new Sport MomoDesign version, the new Ypsilon extends its range to appeal to young drivers who are looking for a sporty car at an accessible price, that provides emotion at the wheel but still maintains all the elegance and distinction that are the reason for the success of Lancia’s compact.

On the outside, the car sports the new Lancia logo and a number of stylistic and chromatic features typical of products from MomoDesign, for example the four bodywork colours (Masaccio Black, Borromini Grey, Casorati Yellow and Raphael White), combined with the exclusive opaque Titanium Grey of the tailgate, the roof and the wing mirrors. The ‘outfit’ of the Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign is completed by burnished metalluro finishing details on certain elements, foglights with colour-coded frames, black tone-on-tone ‘MomoDesign’ graphics on the central pillar and original 16” diamond effect burnished alloy wheels. The same sporty styling is evident inside, where the dark panelling of the passenger compartment sets off the black of the technological Airtex fabric on the seats and the leather of the steering wheel and gear lever knob, and the Ypsilon logo on the head-restraints adds an elegant touch. And for extra sportiness the seats can be upholstered with Leather and Alcantara® Starlite, with perforations through which a silver ‘MomoDesign’ is visible.

Whoever loves driving will find that the compact new Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign guarantees sparkling performance on every road, providing great sensations for the driver and passengers, thanks to the low suspension and disc brakes front and rear.

Where the engines are concerned, the most assertive is the sparkling 1.3 Multijet 16V which delivers 105 bhp at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm (20.4 kgm) of torque at 1750 rpm. With this engine and a 5-speed gearbox, the car has a top speed of 177 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. Excellent performance that makes this car the most powerful compact in its class. In spite of which consumption and CO2 emissions are low, as they are on the entire Multijet range: 4.7 l/100 km in the combined cycle and 123 g/km.

The Sport MomoDesign range will include a petrol version with a 1.4 16v engine that delivers 95 bhp, which is more entertaining to drive, thanks to a 6-speed manual gearbox (the sequential, robotised DFN gearbox is also available). And finally, motorists who wish to combine the handling of a sports car with respect for the environment in a compact, are offered the 90 bhp 1.3 Multijet 16v, which fits the DPF particulate filter as standard equipment.

The most striking characteristics of the Lancia Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign are its original styling and excellent performance. But it is also lavishly equipped: climate control, ‘Dual Drive’ electric power steering, Hi-Fi radio-CD player, remote control door opening and closing, Follow me home device, dark rear windows, perforated leather upholstery on the steering wheel and gear lever knob with silver overstitching. On the outside, the car has diamond-effect burnished 16” alloys and colour-coded twin electric wing mirrors. In the safety field, the new Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign is equipped with ABS complete with EBD, front airbags and curtain-bags (sidebags are available as an option) and the sophisticated ESP system with ASR and a Hill Holder. The lavish array of equipment also features electric front windows, a split, folding, tilting rear seat and a steering wheel that adjusts for height and reach. And finally, there is a long list of optional equipment that includes the GranLuce sunroof, dual zone automatic climate control, a Bose® sound system, a satellite navigator and the Blue&Me® system.

At a later date, a rear spoiler will also be available, the ideal solution to make this sporty compact look even more aggressive.

The Ypsilon Sport MomoDesign will go on the market in Italy in mid June, and will gradually strengthen the new Ypsilon range on all the other markets.

The new Sport MomoDesign version obviously inherits all the distinction and prestige inherent in the new Ypsilon, a car that combines the excellence of the styling with cutting-edge technology. Just like all the best Italian luxury products, names that are famous throughout the world. The new Ypsilon was designed and developed for a clientele that likes to stand out with exclusive products, and for whom a car must be first and foremost a pleasure to use. And like all the best Italian luxury products, the new Ypsilon exudes stylistic refinement, perfect colour combinations and endless possibilities to customise this ‘pocket flagship’, over 700 in fact, by combining 12 bodywork colours, 4 specifications (Argento, Oro Bianco, Oro Giallo and Platino), 9 new ‘bicolore’ liveries, 9 different interior outfits and 7 types of alloy (including those from Linea Accessori). Whatever the level of customisation, the new Ypsilon is always appealing and original, typical of the Italian good taste that is famous around the world.

So the new Ypsilon demonstrates, yet again, the great versatility of this ‘pocket flagship’, a successful model with which Lancia enters a future in which the product will not be the only ‘premium’ topic that sets it aside from the competition, nor will it be the only motivating factor that stimulates a potential buyer. Which is why the brand has looked at important novelties in terms of sales and after-sales, to meet the desires, needs, tastes and aspirations of so many different customers. For example, in Italy customers are offered the ‘Lancia VYP Service’ which includes roadside assistance and a courtesy service that collects and redelivers the car for periodical maintenance checks. This means that, for two years, in other words for the entire warranty period, the customer does not have to worry about taking the car to the workshop for periodical maintenance because Lancia will deal with it, guaranteeing the customer’s mobility in the meantime. In the event of a breakdown, a puncture, an empty fuel tank, etc, the mobile workshop will intervene to solve the problem rapidly. It is a revolutionary service designed specifically for a ‘premium’ customer.

New 2008 Pontiac Solstice Is Grand Prize in ACDelco's "Summer Solstice" Promotion

The summer solstice is the day it stays light the longest and marks the official beginning of summer, usually June 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. ACDelco’s “Summer Solstice” promotion, which lasts for three months, offers eligible customers the opportunity to win prizes. And, one lucky winner will drive away with the Grand Prize: a .

The promotion is open to registered ACDelco WISE (Web Integrated Service Environment) and WIP (WISE Internet Parts) customers. Eligible customers will be grouped into one of three program levels based on their best monthly purchase history during the 12 months preceding the promotion, with that month then multiplied by three. New vehicle dealerships are not eligible for the promotion.

Contestants with the highest percentage increase in qualifying ACDelco product purchases using WISE or WIP between June 1 and August 31, 2007 will win the prize for their purchasing level. Prizes include a $1,000 gift certificate, a Plasma TV and a 2008 Pontiac Solstice.

The “Summer Solstice” promotion is the first of what ACDelco Marketing Manager John Eck feels will be a trend toward electronic promotions.

“We have the tools in place now, so we anticipate doing more e-Promotions,” Eck said. “We can do more with e-Tools because we can display and market to our customers so quickly. Because the ‘Summer Solstice’ promotion is electronic, it just shows up on customers’ screens the next day.”

* Customers must register for the promotion from a link that is located on their WIP / WISE screen; they also can register from a link on acdelcotechconnect.com. Once registered, customers will see their individual program levels, as well as their current standings, which are updated daily on their WIP / WISE promotional dashboards.

Eck said e-Promotions can also be more efficient, not just for ACDelco but for enrollees as well. “By running e-Promotions, ACDelco can provide customers with their program standings on a daily basis rather than through monthly reports. This affords them the opportunity to change their purchasing behavior accordingly, leading to better, more effective participation.”

Participants can sign up anytime during the “Summer Solstice” promotion, and their purchases will be tracked back to June 1. Eck is hoping a high percentage of WISE and WIP users will participate in the promotion.

“We would love to have all eligible customer participants sign up for the promotion,” he said. “Enrollment is quick and easy; there is no cost to participate and they are already using the e-Business tool. What would be unfortunate is if someone chooses not to participate in the promotion, then finds out he or she would have won when it’s over.”

Visit www.acdelcotechconnect.com for the official program rules and for additional details of the “Summer Solstice” promotion.

New 2008 Ford Taurus' Quality Can Be Felt, Heard

2008 Ford Taurus
2008 Ford Taurus

Little things mean a lot. That's the philosophy that guided engineers and designers who worked on the 2008 Ford Taurus.

"One of the areas that we focused on is what we like to call the 'handshakes' of the vehicle -- the things that influence a person's initial impressions of the car," said Robert Parker, car marketing manager, Ford Division. "It's an attention to detail that tells the customer on either a conscious or subconscious level that the vehicle is well built."

According to Parker, things such as the way the door sounds when it closes, how the audio control knobs feel when you turn them or the way the vehicle sounds when it's idling are just a few examples of the kinds of details that leave lasting impressions on car buyers.

"If you ask a customer, they might not be able to consciously identify these things, but we've found through research that all of these factors taken collectively add up to an improved perception of quality," he said.

Parker says it could be something as simple as the way the door handles are molded.

"We used to mold the plastic in the previous generation in such a way that the seam was right where your fingers were so that when you grabbed it, you felt a rough edge," he said. "We spent a lot of time improving small details like that in the 2008 Ford Taurus."

The shifter knob is another example, says Ben Winter, chief engineer for the Ford Taurus.

2008 Ford Taurus
2008 Ford Taurus interior

"We developed a new shifter knob and shifter assembly that feels more solid and substantial in the customer's hands," he said. "We also standardized leather on the shifter and added chrome and wood accents as an option. In general, we made the shifter feel, look, sound and operate in a more refined and solid way."

According to Winter, customers probably wouldn't take their car back to the dealer because the clock is difficult to read, but improving the clarity of the clock and the instrument cluster will probably increase their perception of quality.

"We made the gauges and the clock in the 2008 Ford Taurus much easier to read no matter what kind of lighting condition you're driving in -- broad daylight, twilight with the lights on, or dark with the lights on," he said. "It's the type of refinement that makes the customer feel more satisfied with their car."

Since the Ford Taurus is derived from the Ford Five Hundred, interior designers were limited to working within the existing architecture. According to Susan Sage, Taurus interior designer, color and materials were used to alter the look and feel.

"With fashion, for example, you can change your jewelry and make an outfit look totally different," said Sage. "The same concept applies to vehicle interior design."

Sage says designers enhanced the interior of the 2008 Ford Taurus by adding a little bit of "bling."

"We added chrome ring accents to the audio and climate control knobs," she said. "It's a fairly small thing, but we’ve received a lot of complements about it from the media, guide book editors and even customers in final drive research."

Designers also lightened the headliner to make the vehicle feel more open and spacious, and they upgraded Taurus' leather seats.

"We opted to upgrade the leather because it has a softer feel -- what we call a luxurious hand -- which communicates to customers that they are in a premium car," said Sage.

Winter says engineers will soon be implementing a new exterior door latch mechanism in all vehicles, including the Taurus, which will make the door sound more solid when it is opened and closed.

"The customer hears the sound the car makes when they open and close the door, and based on that sound and that sound alone, the customer is going to draw a conclusion in their mind about the quality of the entire car," he said.

After all, it's the little things that count.

First Drive: 2008 Subaru Tribeca - Previews

Previews

Although the availability of a “real” SUV in the form of the B9 Tribeca bumped overall Subaru sales past the 200,000-unit mark in 2006, sales of the controversially styled mid-size SUV were considered mediocre. In response, Subaru has brought out a hastily revised version. The new Tribeca (thankfully, the confusing B9 prefix has been dropped for the 2008 model) features fairly comprehensive front and rear styling revisions, replacing the controversial Alfa Romeo–like cues with more conventional treatments that more closely resemble the Chrysler Pacifica, particularly with the badge set within a band of chrome atop the grille. Perhaps Subaru should have called it the Chry-beca.

Better, however, is the charming flat-six powerplant, which has been boosted in capacity from 3.0 liters to 3.6 liters in the interests of improved performance and economy, with horsepower and torque bumps to match.

Here’s where it gets interesting

The flat-six engine (or H6, as Subaru calls it) is already a tight fit in the Tribeca’s engine bay. Since the H6 is a horizontally opposed layout, any significant increase in crankshaft stroke would result in increases in engine-block deck-height that would make the engine too wide to fit in the existing structure.

The problem was exacerbated by typically thrifty computer-aided engine design, which left minimal space between the engine’s cylinder bores. Subaru calculated that it could safely increase the bore size from 89.2mm to 92.0mm, but that change would have bumped the displacement to only 3191cc. Subaru needed more than that for the performance improvements it was seeking, so it came up with a novel way of increasing piston stroke without raising the cylinder deck height. The answer was an asymmetrical connecting-rod design (which looks somewhat like a lamb chop) that permits the piston to travel farther downward into the crankcase and increases the effective stroke from 80mm to 91mm.

Increasing both bore and stroke has resulted in the 3.6-liter displacement figure, a growth of 0.6 liter, with substantial gains in power and torque. The new engine produces 256 horsepower at 6000 rpm versus 250 at 6600 in the previous engine. Better, however, is the torque peak of at 247 pound-feet at 4400 rpm versus 219 at 4200, and about 180 pound-feet are now available at engine speeds as low as 1200 rpm.

Driving Impressions

Also welcome news, as gas prices climb again, is that various tuning revisions have altered the engine’s octane requirement from premium to regular, promising substantial cost savings to Tribeca owners. And, in spite of the engine’s newfound strength, fuel consumption remains the same as in ’07, according to Subaru, which estimates EPA ratings of 16 mpg city and 21 highway by the EPA’s new 2008 model standards.

During the engineering redesign process—which pared about 10 pounds off the engine’s weight—Subaru altered the cooling system from one where cylinders receive the coolant flow sequentially to one where separate ducts provide each cylinder with its own fresh supply. This more-equal cooling strategy allowed the engineers to advance the spark timing by one degree, yielding six pound-feet of torque in the process.

The overall improvement in torque delivery permitted revisions to the transmission torque converter and shifting strategies, greatly reducing the amount of hunting and downshifting that is considered annoying by current Tribeca owners. The result, says Subaru, is a more flexible and tranquil drivetrain, with improved throttle response, a more flexible operation, and better performance with lower operating costs.

Driving Impressions

It sounds like a tall order, and we got our first chance to drive the Tribeca recently to confirm whether Subaru was blowing sunshine up our bums. What we found is a very well-balanced, stable, and confidence-inspiring ute—just like its predecessor—only faster.

The larger motor is quite prolific, with increased torque all through the rev range, making squirting through the mountains south of Palm Springs, California, a brisk affair. The manumatic transmission makes it easy to keep revs high, where most of the fun is, though we wished for steering-wheel-mounted paddles in addition to the floor-mounted deal. That said, it’s rare that a sport-ute drives well enough to prompt us to shift ourselves, so we’ll consider ourselves fortunate.

Turning the steering wheel is met with predictable response and nice feedback, requiring just enough effort to feel engaging without being exhausting. On the highway, we appreciated the excellent on-center feel. Body motions are beautifully managed thanks in no small part to the low mounting of the lightened H-6. So enjoyable is the ’08 Tribeca to fling about, that if you had your eyes closed, you might swear you were driving the previous-gen BMW X5 3.0i, provided your ears weren’t expecting the whirr of Bimmer’s distinct I-6.

Specs

The Sum-Up

While we welcome the enhanced drivability of the Tribeca, we aren’t convinced the styling is an improvement—indeed, there are several among us who sort of liked the funky, boldly different schnoz of the previous model and are unimpressed with the sanded-down version.

The Jetson-inspired interior is no different—not a bad thing, but we also were reminded of just how tight the Tribeca’s second-row seat is when there’s a third-row behind it (two-row Tribecas have much more space in the back seat).

Perhaps when the Tribeca is completely redesigned, say, in 2011 or 2012, Subaru will remedy the Tribeca’s cramped rear quarters, and finally get the front end right. They got the engine part down, which is an excellent place to start.

2007 AC Schnitzer S3 Cabrio based on BMW 3 Series Cabriolet

A Convertible provides the ultimate for the senses: Where can you experience driving more directly than in an open car, with the wind gently emphasising the acceleration, the acoustic muscle play of the engine teasing your ears, and a breathtaking silhouette reflected in every shop window. The new BMW 3-series Convertible, a complete car with folding hard top, stimulates the automotive pleasure centre without setting reason aside. When you've had one taste, you soon long for more.

As for all current BMW models with 3.0d engine, we offer a diesel performance upgrade for the 3-series convertible. An additional control unit program provides 195 kW / 265 HP and a maximum torque of 550 Nm.

In order to provide performance upgrades for the 335d and 335i with the new Twin Turbo technology, totally new developments are required. These are currently in the first stages of the test phase. Despite the increase in power, the excellent driving behaviour, moderate fuel consumption and superb stability remain unchanged with both performance upgrades.

Even without engine tuning, we recommend to fit the sports rear silencer which - depending on base model - is available as a single system or in right-left combination. For a purely aesthetic conversion, tailpipe trims are also available "solo" for some models.

Suspension

The suspension components have been specially set up for the use of the wheel and tyre combinations. Depending on personal preference, the owner of a 3-series convertible of model range E93 can choose between pure suspension springs and a complete, performance-comfort set sports suspension which lowers the BMW by around 25 mm.

The suspension concept developed in extensive tests on the North Loop of the Nьrburgring also includes the AC Schnitzer sports antiroll bars for the rear axle and aluminium strut braces for front and rear.

Bodywork

In designing the bodykit, the objective for AC Schnitzer was not to hide the body contours under excessive bulges, but to emphasise the natural characteristics of the vehicle in a structured way.

So the front skirt, which simultaneously increases downforce, in its basic design follows the three-piece original but it is substantially softer, more facetted and more energetic.

Like the AC Schnitzer side skirts which aesthetically highlight the side crease of the convertible body and with their asymmetric lines, rising towards the back, emphasise the sporting abilities of the vehicle even when stopped.

Although the classic rear view of the new 3-series convertible is already eyecatching, the AC Schnitzer design language with its more strongly contoured rear skirt expresses extra sporting ambitions with no loss of credibility or coherence.

The Interior

For the interior of the convertible, an extensive range of high-quality accessories is available.

For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an ergonomically designed airbag steering wheel. There is also a carbon steering wheel trim in silver Exclusive.

Another highlight in the interior is the AC Schnitzer speedometer display up to 300 km/h.

Footrests and pedals of aluminium create a more exclusive atmosphere in the cockpit together with the carbon interior trim in silver Exclusive. The aluminium gear knob, handbrake handle and cover for the BMW "i-Drive System" are available in silver or black anodized finish. Velours foot mats complete the range.

The Wheels

Type II and Type III alloys and racing rims are of course available. Wheel/tyre combinations are possible in various sizes from 17" to maximum 20", with 245/30 R 20 all round.

The avant-garde Type IV alloy with its optional chrome elements as well as the Type IV BiColor alloys constitute true highlights in the wheels sector.

2007 JNH Porsche 996 GT3 Version 02

What's consistent in Version.02 model is Urban Design. What's important in the end is how owners themselves like it, not how it is judged by others. In other words, it's the owners, not manufacturers nor media experts that find and decide the value of GT3. After all, Ver.02 is about how owners like to drive it. It is yin to ver.01's yang.

Great performance on both winding road and race circuit is without a doubt a must for a car to be called GT3 but it also has to appeal its presence even in a casual daytime cruise in urban area.

Ver.02 provides GT3 owners that rare combination of steady performance and not-too-excessive-but-it-still-stands-out appearance. JNH takes pride in taking in all different aspects of a car and proposing tailor-made design ideas for each and every car.

UEV Electrum Spyder

A sports-focused electric vehicle from a Californian company trying to make green cars sexy? Sound familiar?

Hot on the heels of Tesla's celebrity electric roadster - and from a mere 350 miles away down the Cali coast - comes this, the UEV Electrum Spyder.

UEV Electrum SpyderUEV Electrum Spyder 2UEV Electrum Spyder 3UEV Electrum Spyder 4That's UEV for Universal Electric Vehicle, a company which promises to deliver 'better driving performance and aesthetic design' for zero-emissions cars.

Well, that 'aesthetic design' bit might cause some controversy. When the Electrum Spyder was unveiled at the Alt Car Expo in Santa Monica last December, it split opinion into two camps: those who thought it was a funky and fresh departure from the standard box-style electric car design; and those who thought that it looked like a cheap mini-rip-off of a Ferrari 360/Toyota MR2/probably a bunch of other stuff as well.

Unlike the Elise-based Tesla, the Electrum is a new design from the ground up.

UEV promises a range of up to 150 miles (dependent on 'driving habits' - take heed all you heavy right-footers) when the Electrum is fitted with the standard nickel zinc batteries.

However, spec your UEV with lithium ion batteries (that's Li-Ion in trendy So-Cal speak) and you'll get a range nearer 300 miles. The drawback? It'll add another $30,000 to the Electrum's $70,000 base price.

That puts the Electrum firmly in Tesla price territory - but it doesn't quite have the grunt to match. UEV is quoting performance figures of 7.0 seconds to 60mph, which is respectable if not spectacular, but a top speed of just 80mph. Which is a bit rubbish, frankly.

Such sedate performance is partially down to the Electrum's 1,400kg kerb weight, making it a proper porker in roadster terms: battery weight is still a massive hurdle in producing a viable electric car.

As is crash testing. Concerns have been raised that the Electrum hasn't yet been formally crash tested yet. However, UEV vice-president Greg Lane says digital crash modelling has already taken place and that the company is in negotiations to provide formal testing before the first vehicles go on sale early next year.

The Electrum looks likely to remain a rare vehicle, though: just 150 will be built in the first year, with production rising to 900 units within three years.

Nonetheless, it's good to see some competition for the Tesla cropping up... if the UEV makes it to production, that is. That electric car war ain't won yet, Mr Musk.

BMW X5 4.8i M Sport

The weird science that is SUV genetics has another test-tube guinea pig in the form of the new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport.

BMW X5 4.8i M SportBMW X5 4.8i M Sport 2The utility part of the SUV genetic tampering is taken care of by the new X5, while the sport part is handled by the 355bhp 4.8-litre V8 motor implanted under the bonnet, which has 5bhp more than the previous model.

All that power propels the X5 4.8i from nought to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to 150mph.

Just to make sure you know this is the M Sport version, BMW has grafted on a bodykit, 19-inch alloys and sports suspension.

There are sports seats inside, and the usual Anthracite headlining and M-badged steering wheel.
The £53,440 X5 4.8i M Sport is sold out until the end of the year, but BMW is set to offer a Sport trim for the rest of the range, which is handy because this trim accounted for 90 per cent of the previous-gen X5's sales.

Maybe this SUV science is on to something. We still eagerly await the first 4x4 with a human ear grafted onto the roof, though.

2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena

The sensitive task facing us when choosing to work on 360 Modena was whether we could put our own spice on the world’s most complete design, which was Pininfarina and whether we could improve functional-wise what Ferrari’s craftsmanship mastered in ground effect.

2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 22007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 32007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 42007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 5JNH’s long standing policy is not to work on anything if it’s only for dress-up purpose. Our motto is to use our magic to better the original design and function.

We have conducted numerous testing with stock car and what we witnessed there was disturbing. In 6th gear and extremely high speed situation, front under cover for which our modeler has nothing but praise was ripped apart and the fear of front lift ran through test drivers mind.

Extensive testing led us to this conclusion: 360 Modena is better left as it is. What we should do is respect the stock body and refine it JNH way.

Utilizing Venturi Tunnela and respecting Pininfarina design, specially on the side view --- What JNH proudly presents are: Front canard that’ll be separately installed, Splitter which looks perfect on smooth side view and Rear under diffuser that effectively handle air from the bottom of body.
