Vauxhall VXR8

Like the distant cries from the mad uncle locked in the attic, we hear that Vauxhall has another barmy Aussie motor on the way, just waiting to howl at the moon.

Vauxhall VXR8Vauxhall VXR8 2Vauxhall VXR8 3The Antipodean is called the VXR8, so it won't take a forensic scientist to work out that there's a big old V8 lurking under the bonnet.

It's the same 6.0-litre 420bhp monster that we last saw in the end-of-line Monaro VXRs, and in this VXR8 saloon, this is enough to see off 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds, although there's no word on top speed as yet.

Sticking with rear-wheel drive, the VXR8 comes with either a six-speed manual gearbox or, included for the first time, a five-speed auto.

The auto attracts a £1,400 premium, but when the VXR8 costs only £34,995, we reckon you can afford to indulge in a few extras when the car goes on sale in July.

Italdesign Giugiaro Vadho Concept Makes Hydrogen Steamy

TURIN, Italy — Italdesign will be pushing the alternative-fuel message at next week's Geneva auto show with the unveiling of a futuristic-looking, hydrogen-powered concept car called the Vadho.

Italdesign Giugiaro Vadho ConceptBased around a unique chassis developed in-house at Italdesign's Turin-based headquarters in Italy, it moves well away from the retro themes explored on the company's last concept car, the Giugiaro Mustang, adopting distinct aeronautic-inspired styling cues, including seating for two within a tandem cockpit fashioned in a teardrop shape down one side of the upper body.

The car to be shown in Geneva is described as having left-hand drive. However, the use of compact drive-by-wire control systems is claimed to mean the Vadho can easily be adapted to right-hand drive. The Vadho does away with a traditional steering wheel in favor of two joystick controls. Power, meanwhile, comes by way of a hydrogen-fueled engine positioned at the rear next to the passenger.

Conceived to highlight the need for ecological propulsion, the Vadho also marks the debut of Italdesign's new corporate logo: a large G in the company's corporate shade of red.

Ford Mondeo

Once upon a time, a new family car from Ford would simultaneously attract the biggest fanfare, and the biggest yawns.

Ford MondeoFord Mondeo 2Now, thanks to its appearance in the recent James Bond flick, the new Mondeo's film star looks have earned it a most triumphant fanfare.

The price of the new Mondeo is more Holyhead than Hollywood, however, and will kick off at £14,995 for the petrol 1.6-litre Edge five-door model.

There are the usual saloon, hatch and estate bodies, and four trims covering Edge, Zetec, Ghia and Titanium.

Order books open in March for the new vehicle, and deliveries are expected to begin in June.

Fiat Bravo Takes a Bow in Solo Performance

GENEVA — Next week at the Geneva auto show, the Fiat stand will be devoted in its entirety to the 10 models that make up the Bravo lineup. The company hopes this move will maximize the effect of the show debut for the new model.

Fiat BravoFiat Bravo 2There will be engine variants from a 150-horsepower 1.4-liter gasoline engine to a 150-hp 1.9-liter Multijet diesel, a wide range of equipment levels, trim options and custom choices, and all kinds of enticingly named colors like Maranello Red, Maserati Blue, Provocative Black and so on.

This is not an unprecedented move for media days. A couple of years ago, Rover showed two prototypes of a forthcoming Mini replacement to journalists, but by the time the general public arrived, the stand had been rearranged and the one-off cars disappeared.

Fiat will also change the layout when the Geneva show opens to public scrutiny. Then the whole Fiat lineup will be presented, including the 100-hp Panda, the highly popular Sedici and the quirky Croma.

Also, the Geneva show will be the first opportunity for the Italian carmaker to show off its new logo.

New Volkswagen Golf Estate

Amid the supercoupes and ketamine-fuelled concepts of the Geneva show, there'll be a healthy dose of practicality present in the shape of the new Volkswagen Golf Estate.

New Volkswagen Golf EstateNew Volkswagen Golf Estate 2Although VW is highlighting the estate's revised front end and dynamic lines, it's a unapologetically practical station wagon.

With a low-loading boot lip, roof rails and fold-flat rear seats, bootspace stands at a whopping 1,550 litres - the largest loadspace of any Golf to date.

Volkswagen's tried-and-tested 1.9- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels join a brace of petrol engines - a 1.4-litre TSI and 1.6-litre FSI - from the Golf hatchback.

The smaller petrol is actually the more powerful variant, and comes with the option of a DSG gearbox instead of the standard six-speed manual shifter.

The Golf Estate goes on sale this summer in the UK, with prices to be confirmed nearer to the time.

Gumpert Apollo Sport

PRESS RELEASE:

Gumpert Apollo Sport

Rebel amongst super sport cars

It is one of only a handful of super sport cars and after its debut at Geneva's international Motor Show in 2006 it was clear: the apollo is a synthesis of dynamic and design with pure driving pleasure and unique performance. On the road it speeds like a god and on the race track it cries out to be challenged by an opponent that can match its breathtaking acceleration and incomparable handling. Now, it is due to get a worthy competitor out of its own stable. At the 77th Geneva Motor Show, the Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur will present the apollo sport to the wide public.

The apollo sport is the rebel amongst the super sport cars. Its bodywork combines sexy curves with potent edges and angles and aims for uncompromising aerodynamics. A clear demonstration of the principle "form follows function". Its challenging sporting design derives from the requirement to built a street legal racing car, whose number one priority is to provide extraordinary performance on the circuit, but at the same time embodying a vehicle suitable for daily use.

The highest importance was attached to safety: the tubular space frame in chrome-molybdenum steel with integrated safety monocoque fabricated in carbon-fiber passes all crash-tests regulations, while a cashbox offers additional protection. The gaping air intake stub over the roof and on the rear signals power, dynamics and superiority. The eight cylinder, bi-turbo mid-engine with up to 800 horsepower is capable of catapulting this 1200 kg missile from 0-100 km/h in only 3 seconds.

The apollo sport is equipped with an extended aerodynamic package and, in contrast to the three part spoiler of the apollo, possesses a racing wing which gives even more down force and pushes the spollos's maximum speed up to 360 km/h.

As you can guess, it is not for nothing that this cars is named after the fierce Greek God.

The two-seater also convinces from the inside, with its sporty and elegant alcantara interior, and offers air-condition, CD-player, navigation system and reverse view camera as standard equipment. A two-layer metallic finish available in any conceivable color, gives this bolide a particular luster. As a special accessory the apollo is equipped with an airjack, a pneumatic jacking pad.

The standard version of the apollo sport costs 299.500,- € plus VAT.

Tramontana supercar cometh

PRESS RELEASE

a.d.TRAMONTANA, presents its production model in the 77th Geneva International Motorshow 2007
Tramontana: half formula 1, half fighter.

First it was the idea, then the model, later the prototype and now, finally, the final genesis has come: the first Tramontana is already ready for its international presentation. Journalists of the whole world are going to meet in the Geneva Motor Show to see, touch and hear for the first time the Tramontana, the only exclusive sports car of Spanish manufacture.

That's right. The Tramontana is already ready for its world debut next 8. March. A.d. TRAMONTANA, the Catalan company that has created it, after years of investigation and development presents the definitive version, and we are not in presence of just any vehicle: the Tramontana does not answer to the classic super-sports car, the best arguments of a formula 1 and a fighter have met together with an aesthetics inspired by the beauty of the
classic ones that marked a historical milestone.

The result? A car of a great technical precision, with a personalized design, 100 % handcrafted for a highly qualified team of professionals. Undoubtedly, a new kind of car for which still a name does not exist, since it
represents a new step in the evolution of its specie.

It is enough to observe the aesthetics to realize its exclusivity, where conjugate retro elements, material of last generation like carbon and magnesium with traditional elements like wood, white gold or leather, without forgetting its high number of customizations. But if
we concentrate on the details, the idea still acquires more force.

Among the definitive solutions of the Tramontana, we find a new electronic system, with full silver wiring and a central engine V12 Biturbo capable of offering a power of 550 CV and 720 CV selectable.

Regarding safety, it is the only sports car of the market that incorporates a carbonfibre monocoque inspired by the design of a formula 1 and made with the same criteria, guaranteeing a high protection to its passengers. A monocoque with 8 deformable zones calculated for the absorption of the impact energy.

On the other hand, this monocoque contributes a lightness and maximum rigidity to the whole, factor that together with its suspension system, only on its market of double wishbones with pushrod and a great length of arms, improves the dynamical aptitudes of the vehicle.

All this elaborated with materials of last generation of aerospace technology like the steel to the cromolibdenium, magnesium and duraluminium.
All this is only a sample of what turns the Tramontana into a special car, a tailored jewel in order that its future owner can feel the best sensations, both urban and sports. A.d.TRAMONTANA has wanted to wait to the Geneva Motorshow to present the new development of the Tramontana.

In this manner, the Swiss city will become the scene which is going to approach the world to this new star of the exclusive super sports cars.

Honda Civic Type R Coming To States In 2010?

ctr-sedan-proto002-sm.jpg

The prototype car shown above, modeled on Honda’s JDM/ASEAN market Civic sedan, incorporates a 2.0-liter iVTEC engine giving nearly 220 horsepower, along with the usual suspension and appearance modifications. Given the close proximity of the standard Japanese Civic sedan to its North American counterpart, it would likely be easier to federalize such a model than attempt to import the Euro-market Type R’s angular hatchback, whose bodystyle wasn’t developed with either the U.S. or Canada in mind.

This strikes us as a wise move, because as wonderful as the current Civic Si is here in the States, it’s outgunned by high-horsepower entries like the Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru WRX, both of which will be likely targets for this more expensive CTR.

Lamborghini Spiga Concept

There have been a lot of body modifications for the Lamborghini Gallardo released, but none have been as sexy as the Spiga Concept. Created by Ugur Sahin, an automotive and industrial designer, the Spiga Concept has not been evaluated by Lamborghini, but perhaps it should be.

Lamborghini Spiga ConceptLamborghini Spiga Concept 2Lamborghini Spiga Concept 3Lamborghini Spiga Concept 4Lamborghini Spiga Concept 5Lamborghini Spiga Concept 6The Spiga is clearly based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, which the Author says “proved itself to be a top-notch design.”

The main characteristic of the car is that the rear and the middle flows in an harmonic way which kind of reminds the human muscles stretching to the back, as the front is slightly different than the rear, it also gives a sense of speed and movement forward when viewed form the side angles. The air intakes near the side windows are designed integrated on the body which also shows strong Lamborghini aspects.

Be sure and look at the rear of the car, which is one of its best modifications.

GM's Street-Fighting Transformer Vehicles Rev Up

DETROIT — Until now, moviegoers only got a quick glimpse of the Chevrolet Camaro that stars in Paramount's upcoming Transformers movie via a trailer that hit theaters late last year. The brief clip also offers teaser images of the GMC TopKick truck, Hummer H2 and Pontiac Solstice that will star in what is likely to be the blockbuster film of the summer.

gm transformer camarogm transformer solsticegm transformer hummergm transformer topkickBut General Motors took the edge off this weekend, releasing several images of its four Transformer vehicles. The Chevrolet Camaro is undoubtedly the über-Transformer, dubbed "Bumblebee," a major character in the saga of aliens who take mechanical forms when on earth. GM said it will "roll out a fully integrated marketing and promotional effort around the film in the near future, including a major Chevrolet promotion."

Insiders say this effort may include specially badged vehicles to commemorate the film, as well as the usual line of toys, posters and other movie-related accessories.

GM vehicles are not merely static displays in Transformers. They are clearly embedded in the story line. "Autobot Jazz" converts from a hardtop Pontiac Solstice. "Autobot Ratchet" is a Hummer H2 that has been modified to serve as a rescue vehicle. "Ironhide" changes from a GMC TopKick medium-duty truck.

The movie will hit theaters July 4.

Fiat Grande Punto Abarth Concept Preview

PRESS RELEASE:

The legendary Abarth "Scorpion" returns

A great project will be launched at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show: the rebirth of one of the most prestigious brands in world motorsports. Its symbol is a scorpion, and its name is Abarth.

Abarth has always been synonymous with assertive cars, competitiveness, passion and excitement, and it now returns with a new range that will appeal to all lovers of motorsports. Abarth's first interpretation of the Grande Punto will be on the "catwalk" at the Geneva Show, the first step in an initiative which will later involve other models.

This new adventure starts in the familiar, uniquely emotional context and exclusive setting of the Geneva Motor Show. A striking stand has been prepared, in line with the philosophy of Abarth's rebirth, an innovative space with a fresh, contemporary, technological language and great attention to every detail. The new elements that will publicise the Abarth brand are displayed with all their strong, original personality: the revamped version of the famous Abarth racing stripe has been rendered with LED tiles, while the new logo, the scorpion and the wording are all large, three-dimensional elements in polished, satin-effect aluminium.

The Abarth values and tradition on the other hand are underlined discreetly and technologically: refined materials and precious finishing details in aluminium, carbon fibre, enamel and lacquer decorate the exhibition area, and draw attention to the true stars of the stand: the Grande Punto Abarth S2000, a car that has been type-approved for racing and is proving to be highly successful, and the Grande Punto Abarth Preview, a concept car making its world debut.

These are the two souls of the Abarth world: racing and standard production.

Visitors to the Geneva Show will also have an opportunity to discover a third field in which the brand operates; a multimedia configurator will illustrate the whole concept of the 'Abarth Kit', and the flexibility and wide range of combinations that the brand will offer customers in its conversion kits. Some of these solid wooden boxes, inlaid with satin-finished aluminium trims, are on display inside glass cubes, with the historic mechanical and stylistic components from the conversion kits.

And finally, by means of exclusive LED technology and plasma screens, the walls of the stand propose historical photographs and films, alternating them with a reproduction of the new Abarth racing stripe, underlining the fine link between the past and the future, as well as the energy and personality that are inherent in the Abarth brand.

The Grande Punto Abarth Preview

The absolute star of the stand is the Grande Punto Abarth Preview, a true jewel of assertiveness and elegance. The car will be marketed in September, to enhance the sporty, youthful positioning of the Grande Punto.

The car on show in Geneva is equipped with a 1.4 Turbo petrol engine that delivers 150 bhp at 5500 rpm, boosted to 155 bhp by the adoption of 98 RON petrol. What is more, thanks to a booster kit, a version with twice as much power as the basic version (180 bhp) will soon be available. This is a revival of a tradition from the past: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13 bhp at 4000 rpm with a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year delivered 26 bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h.

The Grande Punto Abarth aims to revive the feats of these entertaining performance cars, offering young drivers in particular an opportunity to enter the racing world in complete safety and at an accessible price.

The Grande Punto Abarth S2000

The public in Geneva will also be able to admire the extraordinary Grande Punto Abarth S2000. This is a racing car designed for racing stables, which the Fiat Racing Department will be entering in the 2007 Italian Rally Championship with Giandomenico Basso and his navigator Mitia Dotta. Davide Gatti, winner of the 2006 Fiat Abarth International Trophy, will compete at the wheel of an official Fiat Grande Punto R3D with a diesel engine. On the international scene, the Grande Punto Abarth S2000 will compete in the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge) with drivers Andrea Navarra, his navigator Guido D'Amore, and young Umberto Scandola and Anton Alen.

The Abarth & C. Spa racing team will be managed by Claudio Berro.

Powered by a 2000 cc aspirated engine that delivers 270 bhp, with 4-wheel drive, the new Grande Punto Abarth S2000 is heir to the version that took the 2006 Italian Rally Championship title with Paolo Andreucci and Anna Andreussi, winning 7 of the 11 races on the programme. Nor must we forget the excellent season of their team-mates Andrea Navarra and Guido D'Amore who took third place. Giandomenico Basso and Mitia Dotta won the European title and the International Rally Challenge.

Since its debut last season, the racing version has proved unbeatable, whatever the type of route or terrain. And we must underline that the 15 cars built so far have been ordered by several racing stables in Europe and elsewhere, to compete in domestic and international rallies. And now, thanks to this technological and competitive superiority, the new Grande Punto Abarth S2000 is ready to compete in these two championships with the same determination and assertiveness.

And finally, as well as a successful car and an outstanding team of drivers, the new Abarth & C. company can also boast a staff with a great deal of experience in motorsports: a total of 113 experts, 26 in the engineering field, 43 on the manufacturing side and 9 dedicated to racing.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera revealed!

PRESS RELEASE

Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy - With the Gallardo Superleggera, Automobili Lamborghini presents an uncompromisingly high-performance sports car. Thanks to increased power (an additional 10 hp) and a 100 kg reduction in weight (USA 70 kg), the new range-leading Gallardo Superleggera is even more dynamic than the already very sporty Gallardo. The weight/power ratio of the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera is only 2.5 kg/hp, which puts it unquestionably at the top.

The Superleggera also has the fastest acceleration in its class. It needs only 3.8 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph); 0.2 seconds less than the basic model, and boasting speed and grit under other driving conditions.
The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera is an extremely high-performance car: it includes a standard robotized mechanical 'e-gear' gearbox that guarantees shifting without removing hands from the steering wheel. The new Gallardo Superleggera can be ordered through the dealer network starting March 2007: production volumes will be restricted to lower numbers than the standard Gallardo.

More power thanks to technological developments

The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera's engine is the latest version of Lamborghini's well-known 4,961 cm3 V10. Now 530 hp is reached in 8,000 min-1. The increase in power was made possible by the engine's improved volumetric efficiency through reduced intake load losses and by exhaust backpressures, together with optimized electronic control. Naturally, emission levels observe the strict EURO 4 and LEV II standards.

Higher power thanks to lighter construction

Lamborghini engineers decreased the Lamborghini Gallardo's already low weight when empty (1,430 kg) by another 100 kg using advanced materials and technologies. The engine hood is made of visible carbon fiber and transparent polycarbonate, a type of material that guarantees lightness and also shows off the magnificent V10. The rear diffuser and underbody covering, the rearview mirrors, door panels and the central tunnel's covering are also made of carbon fiber. Further reductions in weight were achieved by replacing certain glass surfaces with transparent polycarbonate. For the interior, monocoque carbon fiber sports seats covered in Alcantara® were chosen to ensure restraint of the driver and passenger during the intense lateral accelerations that the Gallardo Superleggera is capable of achieving around curves.

Exclusive specification and options range

A comprehensive specification and extensive range of options will be available, with some exclusive to the Superleggera. The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera comes with robotized mechanical e-gear as standard; a sports package including shock absorbers; and special suede-covered steering wheel. The car is available in four colors: Midas Yellow, Borealis Orange, Telesto Gray and Noctis Black. Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires (standard) on new Scorpius forged rims accentuate the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. A few of the options that can be requested include the multimedia system with navigator and CD-changer; a rear video camera to make parking easier (with optional rear wing only); a Carbon accessories kit for the interior; a fixed rear spoiler; a four-point seatbelt (not for USA); tubular rear frame or fitting points for later inclusion (not for USA, Japan or Middle East); and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Fiat at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show

Fiat Bravo
New Fiat Bravo

The Fiat stand at Geneva exudes stylistic and architectural appeal, and provides the ideal setting for the world premiere of the new Bravo and for the presentation of the Brand’s new logo to the general public.

It is clearly an important event, and Fiat has decided to prepare a spectacular presentation, dedicating the stand exclusively to a display of ten examples of the new Bravo on the first day, reserved for the international media, a significant decision that draws attention to the launch taking place simultaneously in numerous European countries. The ten Bravos will represent the whole range, outfitted with the Dynamic, Emotion and Sport specifications, equipped with the 120 and 150 bhp 1.9 Multijet engine and the 150 bhp 1.4 T-JET, ‘dressed’ in Maranello Red, Maserati Blue, Nocturnal Blue, Warm Grey, Provocative Black and Trusty Light Blue, and with interior upholstery in fabric and leather with a variety of shades and embroidery.

These truly beautiful cars will win the hearts of the public with their clean, smooth lines, which confirm Fiat’s intention both to build on the new ‘family feeling’ inaugurated with the Grande Punto; and to reinterpret the elements of the best Italian automotive styling tradition, without stylistic distortion or exaggeration. The same essential, smooth shapes are reflected in the whole display area which covers about 1200 square metres, an example of great formal simplicity and rigour, an effect reinforced by mirror surfaces and white used on the floor and walls and to highlight particularly striking elements.

The stand is a sleek rectangle against the side walls of the pavilion. The two-storey office building is built against this wall, while the remainder of the stand is earmarked for the cars. The upper storey is contained in a Barrisol prism, which creates a sinuous shape on the front, into which two large circular portholes are cut, while there are two large three-dimensional logos on the corners of the building. The ground floor is a welcoming space, furnished with a thick pile carpet, large anatomically shaped seats, and display units made of luminous portholes containing the merchandise and alloy wheels. Another striking scenographic effect is created by three large mirror-covered spheres which contain the concept lab dedicated entirely to the world of the 500.

The new 150 bhp 1.4 T-JET engine developed and manufactured by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which is one of the elements of technological excellence present on the new Bravo, is also displayed on the stand.

And finally, on the days that the Show is open to the public, other models from the revamped Fiat range will be on display on the stand. Starting with the Panda 100 HP, a sporty version equipped with the sparkling 100 bhp 1.4 16v engine, and the exclusive Panda Monster (a limited, numbered edition of which just 695 will be produced), the expression of the best Italian styling combined with the technological supremacy that has always been the hallmark of Fiat and Ducati. In Geneva, the public will be able to appreciate the prestige of the Croma Model Year ’07, and the versatility of the Fiat Sedici which, together with the Panda 4x4, represents the brand’s presence in the off-road market with the precise goal of offering all the entertainment and safety that only four-wheel drive can guarantee. Last but not least, the Geneva Show is also an opportunity for visitors to take a closer look at the 2007 range of the Grande Punto which introduces significant improvements to the interior (new fabrics and colours) and greater value thanks to new standard equipment (depending on the market and the outfit): from manual climate control to the sophisticated Blue&Me® system.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC in Geneva

  • First four-cylinder BLUETEC model: well on the way to complying with the EURO 6 emission standard
  • Extremely low emissions thanks to innovative emission control
  • Fuel consumption reduced even further to just 5.5 l/100 km
  • New Mercedes-Benz C-Class awarded Environment Certificate by German TÜV
Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC
Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC

Mercedes-Benz is unveiling its highly environmentally-compatible BLUETEC emission-control technology in combination with a consumption-optimised four-cylinder engine for the first time at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. In terms of ensuring compliance with the even stricter EURO 6 emission standard, applicable to all new vehicles Europe-wide from 2015, the Vision C 220 BLUETEC shows the way ahead. Boasting an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and a peak torque of 400 Nm, the Vision C 220 BLUETEC now requires 5.5 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres, thanks largely to modified diesel engine technology and an intelligent system of energy management.

"The sophisticated four-cylinder diesel engine with BLUETEC emission control is a prime example of leading-edge, future-compatible technology," explains Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG and Head of the Mercedes Car Group. "Our diesel strategy is an effective answer to the question of how to save fuel and, therefore, CO2, how to further reduce all exhaust emissions including NOx and yet still ensure effortlessly superior driving enjoyment. In this respect, we believe our state-of-the-art diesel concept is currently the best and most efficient solution available."

With the Vision C 220 BLUETEC, Mercedes-Benz is providing a taste of things to come as part of its BLUETEC initiative which was launched in the US last autumn. The initial impetus came from the market launch of the E 320 BLUETEC in North America in October 2006, which was timed to coincide with the introduction of low-sulphur diesel in that part of the world. A fuel consumption figure of 6.7 litres per hundred kilometres makes the E 320 BLUETEC one of the most economical vehicles in its class in the US.

With the first four-cylinder BLUETEC model, Mercedes-Benz illustrates just how versatile this innovative technology can be. Following the US launch, the company will also introduce BLUETEC in other markets. The technology is currently being adapted to European market requirements and further Mercedes Benz models, the aim being to also offer BLUETEC in passenger cars for European customers, starting in 2008.

Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC
Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC

BLUETEC – high-tech for the cleanest diesels in the world

BLUETEC is a DaimlerChrysler-developed technology designed to reduce diesel vehicle emissions, especially nitrogen oxides – the only exhaust-gas constituents that are still higher in today's diesel engines than they are in their petrol counterparts due to the principle involved. Mercedes-Benz is working intensively to optimise its engines and their combustion processes so as to minimise the nitrogen oxides before they are actually produced. In terms of "hardware", the sophisticated four-cylinder powerplant in the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC, like the standard-production engines, includes four valves per cylinder, third-generation common-rail direct injection, a turbocharger with a variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation. A highly sensitive electronic engine management unit reacts precisely to an extremely wide range of operating conditions and, in so doing, optimises the combustion processes.

The BLUETEC technology in the Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC still includes an oxidising catalytic converter, which reduces emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC), as well as a particulate filter. A modified NOx storage catalytic converter with a substantially extended service life, including patented on-board ammonia generation, is combined with an additional SCR catalytic converter to minimise nitrogen oxides. This process of exhaust-gas aftertreatment requires no additives.

Mercedes-Benz Vision C 220 BLUETEC combines environmental awareness, driving enjoyment and comfort

The results are impressive whichever way you look at them: on the one hand, the concept car equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission consumes just 5.5 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres (NEDC); on the other hand, it delivers the same impressive output and torque figures whilst providing a unique combination of efficiency and driving enjoyment. The Vision C 220 BLUETEC is prepared for future emission standards, even the considerably more stringent limits imposed by EURO 6, which will apply to all new vehicles from September 1, 2015. For instance, particulate emissions must be reduced by a factor of five by the time the EURO 5 standard comes into force on January 1, 2011 whilst EURO 6 stipulates nitrogen oxide limits that are only around 30 percent of the current limits. All Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles with a particulate filter fitted as standard already undercut the particulate limits that will apply from 2011 onwards.

Current and future limits for diesel vehicles in the EU*

For the US market, Mercedes-Benz will be offering three further V6 BLUETEC models – Mercedes-Benz R Class, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class – with BIN-5 certification for all 50 states from as early as 2008. At the Detroit Auto Show in early January, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer demonstrated just how suitable the clean, economical, high torque engines are for large cars and SUVs: the V8 diesel engine in the Vision GL 420 BLUETEC that was on display at the show has an output of 216 kW/290 hp, a peak torque of 700 Nm and an expected fuel consumption of just 9.8 litres per hundred kilometres.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class: CO2 emissions already reduced by 15 percent

The standard-production version of the new C-Class, which celebrates its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, is testament to the successful work performed by Mercedes-Benz in its quest to consistently reduce both fuel consumption and emissions. A lifecycle assessment carried out on the new Saloon, certified by the German technical inspection authorities (TÜV), confirms that the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for what is now the fourth-generation C-Class have been reduced by 15 percent.

By way of example, the experts who performed the lifecycle assessment calculated that the total energy requirement of the new C-Class is 125 gigajoules lower than that of the previous model, equivalent to around 3800 litres of fuel. Since the year 2000, the carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by nine tonnes (15 percent) per vehicle.

The reduction in exhaust-gas emissions is equally impressive: compared to the previous model produced in the year 2000, the sophisticated technology at the heart of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class cuts nitrogen oxide emissions by around 20 percent and hydrocarbons by twelve percent, according to the lifecycle assessment. Mean-while, particulate emissions from the diesel models have fallen by over 90 percent thanks to the fitting of a maintenance-free particulate filter as standard.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the only car in the world in this market segment to have been awarded the Environment Certificate, thus underlining the Saloon's environmentally compatible product development.

Chrysler Rumor Mill Reaches a Fever Pitch

DETROIT — Even as Chrysler Group CEO Thomas LaSorda sought to soothe the company's uneasy employees via e-mail, media speculation over the ultimate fate of Chrysler reached a frenzied pitch on Friday.

chrysler town countryVolkswagen was the latest multinational carmaker to deny an interest in acquiring the ailing U.S. auto group from parent DaimlerChrysler. DCX Chairman Dieter Zetsche triggered the initial spate of publicity with his announcement that the company would pursue "all options" in response to Chrysler's financial skid, including a spin-off or sale.

In Europe, the Financial Times reported that at least four private-equity groups are holding preliminary talks to buy Chrysler. Reports in Europe say DaimlerChrysler's asking price is 10 billion euros — about U.S.$13 billion.

Among the U.S. private-equity groups said to be in discussions with DaimlerChrysler are Apollo Management, Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group and Cerberus Capital Management. The auto unit of Cerberus is run by David Thursfield, an auto-industry veteran who once ran Ford's European operations.

VW joined a string of corporate deniers that now includes Fiat, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Renault-Nissan. In response to press speculation, all have said they have no interest in acquiring Chrysler, which posted an operating loss of $1.5 billion in 2006.

Press pundits also suggested that one or more state-owned Chinese automakers could be preparing to make a bid for Chrysler. Prospective bidders could include First Auto and Shanghai Auto, the country's two largest carmakers.

Another oft-rumored suitor, General Motors, has declined to comment on media speculation that it has discussed a possible platform-sharing arrangement with Chrysler, similar to the deal under which Chrysler next year will provide VW with a version of its redesigned 2008 Town & Country minivan.

In Detroit, LaSorda has sought to reassure nervous employees and dealers with a series of e-mails and conference calls, according to local press reports.

Chrysler began sending out terms of its latest early-retirement and buyout packages, which aim to cut 13,000 blue- and white-collar workers from the payroll. The initial package, which is being presented only to salaried non-union employees, offers early-retirement incentives to workers as young as 53. Chrysler hopes to eliminate 1,000 white-collar jobs by June and another 1,000 by 2008. The company's contract with the United Auto Workers expires later this year.

LaSorda told employees that a potential deal to sell or spin off Chrysler could take "months" rather than weeks to negotiate.

2007 GeigerCars Star Force Cadillac Escalade2007 GeigerCars Star Force Cadillac Escalade 2
2007 GeigerCars Star Force Cadillac Escalade 32007 GeigerCars Star Force Cadillac Escalade 4A special occasion warrants a special means of transportation: For the Academy Awards Ceremony 2007 GeigerCars.de (www.GeigerCars.de) built the exclusive STAR FORCE VIP shuttle, based on the latest Cadillac Escalade ESV. The STAR FORCE was commissioned by the German TV network ProSieben.

The American SUV was completely reworked by the tuning specialists from GeigerCars.de. The 403-hp / 296-kW 6.2-liter V8 engine gains an additional 20 horsepower with the GeigerCars.de stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system.

On the outside the upgraded Cadillac is an instant eye catcher with its large 10Jx24 chrome wheels and size 305/35 ZR 24 Pirelli Scorpion tires. In addition the ride height was lowered by 100 millimeters and the body was painted in a special ProSieben STAR FORCE color scheme. Bright STAR FORCE LED stars adorn the exclusive VIP shuttle at night. The front received a new and even more commanding chrome grille. But that’s not all: ProSieben TV host Annemarie Warnkross served as the model for the imposing gold-plated hood ornament.

The interior also features an especially exclusive design: The red and black leather seats with STAR FORCE logo are custom-made by GeigerCars.de as is the rear partition wall with retractable glass pane. A Toshiba LCD projector can beam the images of either digital TV broadcasts or a DVD onto the glass pane coated with a special holographic projection surface foil. The accompanying sound comes from a Hi-Fi system with more than 1,000 watts of power and loudspeakers and subwoofer custom-calibrated to the Escalade’s interior.

To provide the two rear passengers with maximum of legroom the body specialists from GeigerCars.de modified the floorpan of the Cadillac. The seats are upholstered with the finest leather sporting the ProSieben colors red and black, and offer maximum seating comfort. The sideboard mounted behind the partition wall comes with an innovative feature: At the push of a button it glides rearward to present the rear occupants with drinks or appetizers.

The GeigerCars.de designers further equipped the black 4x4 with a gigantic Webasto power folding roof over the rear seats to let the VIP guests enjoy the California sun.

Immediately after completion the GeigerCars.de STAR FORCE VIP shuttle was flown to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards Ceremony on February 25, 2007. There ProSieben will use it for its coverage of the world’s most important motion picture award.

TechArt Porsche GTstreet

GENEVA — German tuner TechArt continues to evolve its variations on the classic Porsche 911 Turbo. Its latest endeavor, called GTstreet, will make its debut at the Geneva auto show.

TechArt Porsche GTstreetTechArt conjured up a GTstreet edition of the previous-generation 911 Turbo in 2001. The most recent iteration, based on the 997 body, takes Porsche's legendary twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-6 engine and squeezes out 630 horsepower (up from 480 hp) and 605 pound-feet of torque (up from 457 lb-ft).

The boost in output results in breathtaking performance figures: 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 214 mph.

TechArt also provides a full aero body kit for the GTstreet, and the usual interior modifications.

Honda Crossroad Launched in Japan

TOKYO — Honda's new seven-passenger Crossroad began reaching Japanese dealerships this week. The big question is whether this rugged compact crossover will head across the Pacific to eager American consumers.

Honda CrossroadBuilt on Civic underpinnings, the Crossroad is a new type of vehicle for Honda, with rugged, almost boxy sport-utility vehicle styling cues on the outside and three rows of seats. Honda describes the vehicle as an "active life navigator" that combines the functionality of an SUV with the roominess of a minivan.

In Japan, the Crossroad is being offered with a choice of 1.8- or 2.0-liter VTEC four-cylinder engines, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes on-demand four-wheel drive with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and hill-start assist. Other features include adaptive cruise control and a new collision mitigation system that sends audio and visual warnings to the driver, then applies the brakes to help avoid a rear-end collision with a vehicle ahead.

New Audi A5 Coupe

Following a slightly embarrassing photographic leak this week, Audi has released full details of its new A5 coupe well in advance of its Geneva debut.

New Audi A5 CoupeAuNew Audi A5 Coupe 2New Audi A5 Coupe 3
New Audi A5 Coupe 4New Audi A5 Coupe 5The information confirms what we suspected - that the A5 will firmly target the BMW 3-Series Coupe when it goes on sale this March.

Based on a brand new Audi platform, the A5 will share most of its underpinnings with the new A4, which should arrive at the end of this year.

Although Audi is hailing the A5 as a bold step to its future styling direction, we can't help feeling a bit underwhelmed by its looks.

When Audi launched the original TT, it felt like a car that could change the world, but the design of the A5 just seems derivative and uninspired.

Those unchallenging looks should mask some pretty serious performance, though. Top of the range will be the S5 - the car in the bottom two photos - with a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 delivering 354bhp.

With a six-speed manual 'box putting the power through all four wheels, that's enough to propel it to 62mph in a fraction over five seconds, which definitely puts the S5 in BMW M3 league.

The S5 gets a few cosmetic pointers too, with 18-inch alloys, a quad exhaust and boot lid spoiler, as well as exaggerated door-sill trims.

Until a 170bhp 1.8 TFSI option arrives in the autumn, the only other petrol engine available to the standard A5 will be a 3.2-litre FSI.

A slightly more powerful variation of the V6 found in the current A4, it develops 265bhp and - mated to a six-speed manual 'box - will dispatch 62mph in 6.1 seconds.

Two V6 turbodiesels - a 2.7- and 3.0-litre - complete the engine line-up. The bigger diesel gets a manual 'box and all-wheel drive, while the smaller unit has to make do with front-wheel drive and the option of Audi's Multitronic auto 'box.

Audi will be taking orders for the A5 when it's officially unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

Prices haven't been confirmed yet, but our Audi source said the A5 should start at around £30,000 with the first orders reaching our shores in June.

Previews

No excuses for Saturn’s largest and most expensive offering ever.

In case you haven’t been paying attention to GM’s once-neglected brand that for the past few years has been forced to rely on superior customer service to motivate sales, Saturn is back, this time with a full product revitalization plan, including five new-for-2007 models (Sky, Sky Red Line, Aura, Vue Green Line, and Outlook) and two more coming for ’08 (Vue and Astra).

Among the new-for-’07s is Saturn’s largest and most expensive vehicle ever, the Outlook: a three-row, seven- or eight-passenger people-hauler that will replace the forgettable Relay minivan in the lineup.

Cheapest in the Family

Underpinning the Outlook is an all-new, front-drive unibody architecture, dubbed Lambda, shared with the GMC Acadia, the upcoming and upscale Buick Enclave, and an as-yet-unnamed Chevy version. The four-wheel-independent suspension consists of a strut-front and multilink-rear arrangement.

On the Saturn’s side is price, however, which, at $27,990, starts $2000 lower than the next-cheapest mechanical-twin, the GMC Acadia. Why the price difference? That’s a good question, one even the Saturn reps on hand during our drive couldn’t explain away with feature disparities. One thing the Acadia gets is a standard dual exhaust and, therefore, five more horsepower than a base Outlook XE. Big deal. Other distinctions are more a matter of taste. The Outlook gets unique front and rear sheetmetal and a slightly different interior. We can’t really complain about these big utes’ clean and elegant exterior or the handsome interiors. In fact, we preferred the Outlook’s interior to that of the last Acadia we drove, as the GMC version seems to have gone a little crazy with chrome, which surrounds each vent. In both vehicles, though, the hard-to-the-touch interior plastics whisper “cheap.”

Powertrain

Powering every Lambda SUV is the “high feature” 24-valve DOHC 3.6-liter V-6 that’s been spreading throughout the General’s ranks of late. In base Outlook XE models, the smooth V-6 makes 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Uplevel XR trim adds dual exhausts, which increase those numbers to 275 horsepower and 251 pound-feet. The only transmission available is a six-speed automatic with manumatic control.

Interior and Driving Impressions

Together, this pair is good for respectable fuel economy but only moderate haste. Front-drive models get 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway ratings from the EPA, which drop to 17/24 with all-wheel drive. No complaints there, but with 5000 pounds to haul around, the V-6 is definitely taxed. Expect the trip to 60 mph to take about eight seconds—not painful, but well behind that of the Honda Pilot, which GM sees as a key competitor.

We hope GM has plans to install the 300-hp direct-injection version of its 3.6-liter V-6, as shown in the ’08 Cadillac CTS, but it would be even better if the company could shoehorn the transverse and torquey 303-hp, 5.3-liter small-block from the Pontiac GXP and Chevy Impala SS into these utes.

Big on the Outside, Big on the Inside

The Outlook does interior space more impressively than it chugs to 60 mph, and this is what should attract buyers anyway. All three rows of seats offer near-minivan levels of space, and real-size adults can comfortably fit even in the third row, which is something that cannot be said about the back rows of GM’s truck-based full-size SUVs, the Tahoe and the Yukon, even though the Outlook and the Tahoe/Yukon are similar in size. Access to the Outlook’s third row is granted by pulling a lever on the side of the second-row seat, which pops that seat bottom upward and then slides the whole thing forward and out of the way. This creates a large opening to the rear seat, but the process of folding and sliding isn’t quite as smooth as Saturn officials describe. With all seats in place, there are 20 cubic feet of storage behind the third row—more than in a Tahoe. Folding both rows—no headrest removal required—increases the space to 117 cubes.

So, How’s It Drive?

From behind the wheel, however, we doubt anyone would guess the Outlook is Tahoe-sized. Thanks to well-weighted and readable steering, excellent ride-and-handling balance, and an expansive view out front, the Outlook drives much smaller than it actually is. Okay, there’s not much to get excited about, and its moves are not sporty (check out the Mazda CX-9 if that’s your thing), but hey, it’s not our fault if you have a bunch of kids to haul around. The four-wheel disc brakes are easy to modulate, although the Outlooks we drove had more of an initial dead spot than we remember in the Acadia.

The Outlook never feels clumsy, remaining composed and without excessive body motions over every bump and through every turn we flung it into. And it’s extremely quiet inside at speed. Call it competent—and better than most other 5000-pound vehicles.

Options and Verdict

We would prefer a more responsive transmission, however. For the sake of fuel economy, the six-speed likes to upshift early and then remain in the higher gears. It takes quite a boot to get it to downshift, which is not only annoying but can be jerky as well. Upshifts are smoother but can seem a little lazy at wide-open throttle.

The Saturn Dealer Would Love for You to Add $10,000 in Options

Standard safety equipment is fairly extensive on the Outlook, including anti-lock brakes, stability control, and six airbags (front, side, and curtain). But as one might imagine, there are all sorts of optional goodies—enough to push an Outlook’s price above $40,000—including 19-inch wheels (18s are standard), $2000 on-demand all-wheel drive, a $1295 rear-seat DVD player, stereo upgrades, navigation, XM satellite radio, leather seats, automatic climate control, a $425 trailering package that ups the towing capacity from 2000 to 4500 pounds, a power liftgate, and remote start. Thumbs down for not offering a Bluetooth hands-free phone connection. This wasn’t an oversight, however; GM just wants to encourage the purchase of a pricey OnStar phone plan.

The Verdict

GM’s investment in its products is clearly paying off, demonstrated by these good-looking and spacious new full-size SUVs. They’re extremely competitive in price, interior space, driving dynamics, and feature content. We’ll keep hoping for some more horsepower, while we wait to see how the next-gen Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot stack up.

Mercedes-Benz Builds New Pullman State Limousine: Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman

Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman
Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman: Mercedes-Benz builds new Pullman State Limousine

Mercedes-Benz engineers are currently developing a new, prestigious luxury limousine with integrated highest protection for governments, businesses, monarchs and heads of state. The armoured Pullman Limousine is based on the long version of the S 600 with a substantially extended wheelbase length. The Mercedes-Benz State Limousine therefore provides a level of roominess worthy of its high-ranking occupants, not to mention outstanding comfort and a fully equipped mobile office. The S 600 Guard Pullman sees the world's oldest car manufacturer continuing its long tradition of building large state carriages with factory-integrated special-protection features.

Tradition and innovation are part of Mercedes-Benz' corporate culture. Nowhere is this more evident than in the construction of large, armoured, prestigious limousines. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer is the only carmaker that develops and builds impressive Pullman limousines with special protection, primarily for the official engagements of heads of state and monarchs. And it has been doing so for some eight decades without interruption.

Originally, Pullman cars were railroad sleeping cars with luxurious appointments, produced by the American Pullman Palace Car Company; however, it was not long before the name "Pullman" also came to describe Mercedes-Benz cars with an extra-long wheelbase and an extremely large passenger compartment in the rear. Separated from the front compartment by a partition, the rear compartment housed four individual face-to-face seats, allowing four passengers to sit opposite each other in truly grand style.

The very first Mercedes-Benz car to be factory-fitted with special protection, in 1928, was a long Pullman version of the W 08/460 Nürburg model. This was followed first by the 770 K, which provided protection befitting the status of the Japanese Emperor Hirohito among others, and then by further Pullman Limousines. Eventually, the legendary Mercedes-Benz 600 assumed the mantle of state carriage, holding it for almost thirty years. As well as being used by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany for official business it was the preferred vehicle of governments from numerous other countries and many prominent dynasties. Further Pullman versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Guard featuring special protection followed in these illustrious footsteps. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler: "The new Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman continues an impressive tradition and, as before, will offer the very highest levels of protection, comfort and prestige."

Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman
Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman: Mercedes-Benz builds new Pullman State Limousine

Governments, heads of state and royalty all over the world have always appreciated Mercedes-Benz' vast experience and pioneering technical achievements in the construction of prestigious limousines featuring special protection. The luxury limousine not only provides all the communications and entertainment equipment they need, it also offers them space for discreet meetings. So they have everything perfectly under control, whatever the situation, with the added bonus of highly comfortable, individually styled surroundings.

Newly developed based on the Mercedes-Benz S 600

In terms of technology, the new Pullman Limousine is based on the flagship Mercedes-Benz S 600 L Guard model. Power comes courtesy of a smooth twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cc, an output of 380kW/517 hp and an impressive peak torque of 830 Nm.

Both the chassis and the body are new developments, since simply adding on an extension would not have ensured the required overall stability, given the extra-long wheelbase. These new developments also provide the solid design basis for the installation of the heavy special-protection components. In addition, the new State Limousine features a rear entrance with increased headroom. Behind the partition, there is space for four passengers in the rear compartment with luxurious face-to-face seats in the time-honoured Pullman tradition.

Integrated special protection for highest possible security

The Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman also offers its discerning passengers the highest possible degree of protection against terrorist attacks. The Highest Protection specified for this car is equivalent to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations. Plus it meets further requirements that are not even stipulated by any standard, as tested by public and independent organisations. Its armour resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive devices. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

In order to achieve the highest possible degree of protection, specialists with many years of experience in security technology equip the Pullman Limousine in Sindelfingen, working on the principle of integrated special protection. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall, etc. of an already finished vehicle, they fully integrate them into the bodyshell. Hence the body structure is further reinforced. The resulting vehicles offer hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection, including in those areas where retrofits would be all but impossible. The basis for this is long-standing, continuous and close cooperation with nationally and internationally recognised security authorities. Over a period of decades, this collaboration has ensured that the production and development expertise of the Mercedes specialists has continued to grow. Their vast experience in the fields of protection technology and ballistics enables them to react to changing requirements in the most effective way possible.

Thanks to seamless integration of the special-protection features, the paint quality and corrosion protection match the high standards of conventional Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Furthermore, the Pullman Limousines can be serviced at any Mercedes-Benz service outlet world-wide – a key aspect of the comprehensive, uncomplicated high-level service concept.

It goes without saying that every new Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman will display its own unique brand of styling thanks to an extensive range of appointments options including a choice of paint finishes, leathers and woods. Even the most unusual of customer requests can be met.

The first editions of the new Mercedes-Benz State Limousine are due to be delivered in late 2008.

2008 Ford Taurus Delivers Quiet Quality

2008 Ford Taurus
2008 Ford Taurus

From expandable foam pellets in the A-pillars that help reduce wind noise to hydraulic engine mounts that reduce overall vehicle vibration, the 2008 Ford Taurus is a testament to quiet quality. From a customer perspective, interior quietness is often associated with overall vehicle quality. With that in mind, the Ford Taurus team set out to deliver an interior quietness package that rivals many luxury cars.

"The Ford Taurus is now a leader in that regard," said Paul Larkins, Ford manager of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). "We continue to examine every possible way to reduce road and wind noise, as well as structure-borne noise inside the cabin, so that the human ear can easily and comfortably hear speech."

The new 2008 Ford Taurus' sound package includes the use of an advanced sound-deadening material called Sonosorb™ in the doors, headliner and pillars that improve the vehicle's sound-deadening efficiency by 20 percent.

Even the new climate control system is quieter than before.

"Nearly every part of the heating and cooling system was changed," said Ben Winter, 2008 Ford Taurus lead engineer. "When the fan is on maximum, the new climate control system is 50 percent quieter than the outgoing model and delivers improved performance."

With the introduction of Ford's new 3.5-liter Duratec 35 V-6 to the Taurus, one of the most significant changes is how the engine is mounted to the vehicle. Previously mounted to the front subframe, the engine and transmission on the 2008 Ford Taurus are bolted to the body with hydraulic mounts to reduce vibration.

By moving the roughly 600-pound powerpack off the subframe, engineers were able to better tune the suspension and, ultimately, create an even better ride.

To combat wind noise, side mirrors were made smaller and given a more aerodynamic shape for less turbulence.

The team was also able to reduce vibration by reshaping the area under the rear window -- called the rear package shelf -- and stiffening the area where the shelf meets the floor.

The Taurus isn't the only vehicle benefiting from the work of Ford's NVH team. Similar sound packages have been applied to the 2008 models of the Ford Taurus X, Ford Escape and Ford Focus, Mercury Sable and Mercury Mariner and the 2007 Ford Expedition.

"Exceptional cabin quietness has already contributed to customer satisfaction in the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX," said Larkins. "For Ford's engineering teams the focus on best-of-class interior acoustics will continue with every vehicle we make."

Toyota Rolls Out Limited-Edition Camry Hybrid To Celebrate 50 Years in U.S.

TORRANCE, Calif. — When Toyota rolled out its Toyopet Crown in the United States back in 1957, Elvis Presley was filming Jailhouse Rock, John F. Kennedy had just won a Pulitzer Prize for Profiles in Courage and President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed in his second inaugural address that "We do not fear this world of change."

Toyota Limited Edition Camry HybridToyota Limited Edition Camry Hybrid 2Toyota's first year here was not a great success. The Toyopet Crown was underpowered and couldn't measure up to the long-distance demands of American driving — something that Toyota admits on its historical Web site. But Shotaro Kamiya, president of Toyota Motor Sales in Japan that year, said, "Even if our cars don't quite measure up at the moment, we don't have time to just stand around and watch. We need a bridgehead."

There's no doubt that this is a philosophy that has worked for the Japanese auto giant in the U.S. market. To celebrate, Toyota is rolling out the 2007 Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition beginning in March. It will carry a sticker price of $32,300, including a $620 destination charge.

The special model will feature Blizzard Pearl paint, 16-inch alloy wheels with a graphite finish and 50th Anniversary Edition badging. A power moonroof and heated power mirrors are standard. Other features include a DVD navigation system with a four-disc changer, leather-trimmed bisque-colored interior, heated front seats and carpeted floor mats with the 50th Anniversary Edition logo.

Toyota says it will build only 3,000 units of the special-edition Camry Hybrid.

Cee'd spawns a soft-top

Kia will unveil a coupe-cabriolet concept version of its cee'd hatchback at the Geneva motor show in early March.

kia exceedkia exceed 2In a move that demonstrates either futuristic edginess or rubbish punctuation skills, the Korean manufacturer is calling it the ex_cee'd cabrio.

Based on the three-door cee'd, the ex_cee'd is fitted with a powered fabric roof rather than the folding hardtop found on Peugeot CCs.

With its wedged profile, aggressive front end and bling 19-inch alloys, it's certainly a good-looking addition to the crowded coupe-cabriolet class.

We were impressed by the quality of the cee'd hatch when we drove it recently, and if this model makes it to production unchanged, we reckon Kia is on to another winner.

Don't expect to see it on the roads any time before mid-2008, though.

Brabus Smart Fortwo

GENEVA — Mercedes tuning specialist Brabus, as part of its annual Geneva auto show display, will unveil two new performance variants of the recently redesigned Smart Fortwo.

Brabus Smart FortwoThe 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas engine in the Fortwo Brabus and Fortwo Brabus Xclusive gets a 30 percent boost in output to 98 horsepower, which enables 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 10 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 96 mph.

Brabus also has firmed up and lowered the suspension system to give the Fortwo a sportier ride with better handling. Monoblock VI alloy wheels and a sport exhaust system have been fitted. Other exterior modifications include foglamps and wider rear wheel arches. In addition, the Xclusive edition gets a front spoiler, rear apron, side skirts and tinted-glass headlamps.

The cabin receives a Brabus gearshift knob, handbrake handle and pedals, as well as signature tach, speedo and clock. The Xclusive boasts even more gear, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated leather seats and Brabus floor mats.

Brabus says the Fortwo variants will reach European dealers this fall.

Renault Rolls Out Orange-Flavored Scenic Conquest

PARIS — Maybe they should have called it "Orange Crush." Renault said it will unveil its off-roader Scenic Conquest, a car that is top-heavy with orange inside and out, for the first time at the upcoming Geneva auto show. The Scenic Conquest goes on sale in Europe in June.

Renault Orange-Flavored Scenic ConquestRenault Orange-Flavored Scenic Conquest 2The Scenic Conquest differs from the rest of Renault's Scenic range with its extra 20mm (roughly 3/4 of an inch) of ground clearance, twin skid plates and a suspension that has been modified to take on rough terrain. Outdoorsy extras include an interior bike rack, guards for the door and trunk sills and more storage units.

The Scenic Conquest gets exclusive "Cayenne Orange" exterior paint, as well as orange cabin graphics, orange seatbelts and orange stitching. The lower part of the front bumper has a black graphic coating, and the sides are protected with chunky rubber strips.

Engine choices include a 2.0-liter gas engine that develops 132 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 141 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There is also a 1.9-liter diesel engine that delivers 129 hp at 4,000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. It is coupled to a six-speed transmission.

Renault said two additional engines will be available in certain markets. They include a 1.6-liter gas engine that develops 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 112 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm, and a 105-hp version of Renault's 1.5-liter diesel that generates peak power at 4,000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. Engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Renault Scenic is roughly the size of a Toyota RAV4.

Hyundai i30 Images

SEOUL, S. Korea — Hyundai had planned to officially unveil its new European compact, code-named FD, on the eve of the Geneva auto show in early March. But the "official" images of the car, to be christened i30, began flooding Web sites across Europe on Wednesday.
Hyundai i30 ImageHyundai i30 Images 2The i30 (the name previously was used in North America by Infiniti) is a companion to the Kia Cee'd. It was first displayed in concept form at last fall's Paris show, sporting the difficult-to-pronounce badge Arnejs.

Like the Cee'd, the i30 is a five-door hatchback; both share some basic architectural elements with the Hyundai Elantra. At the moment, Hyundai has no plans to market the i30 in North America.

Jeep Compass

Jeep has released a front-wheel-drive model.
The Compass, which goes on sale in the UK in May, is Jeep's softest SUV yet.

It comes equipped with what Jeep is calling Freedom Drive - a four-wheel-drive system that directs power through the front wheels for 90 per cent of the time, only switching to all-wheel drive when things get really slippery.

Remarkably similar to the Intelligent Four-Wheel-Drive system on the new Vauxhall Antara, Freedom Drive promises hatchback-like handling and better economy.

Indeed, Jeep reckons that the Compass will return 43mpg - a heady statistic for the brawny American firm.

The Compass shares a platform with the upcoming Jeep Patriot, and is available with a VW-sourced 2.0-litre six-speed manual diesel engine or 2.4-litre petrol unit with a five-speed manual or auto 'box.

Prices start at £17,990.

Audi Becomes First Ever To Premier an Automobile at the Interior Design Show - TT Roadster Premieres Tomorrow

AJAX, ONTARIO - Audi will premiere the all new 2008 Audi TT Roadster to the public, at the gala opening of the Interior Design Show in Toronto. The car will be unveiled at 8.30pm on Thursday February 22nd at the Audi stand in the Student Exhibition area by Diego Ramos, Executive Vice President, Audi Canada. This is the first time that a car has been introduced at the show and the first time that Audi has premiered a new model outside of an auto show in Canada.

new 2008 Audi TT Roadsternew 2008 Audi TT Roadster 2
Now in its ninth year, IDS is Canada's premiere platform for contemporary residential design. It is a 3 1/2-day event where the newest Canadian and international furnishings, fixtures and accessories for the residential market are launched and exhibited. Internationally renowned designers, architects and other design luminaries give provocative presentations. Cutting edge exhibits and features highlight the most current in design trends. IDS represents the complete design experience. IDS is attended by a diverse audience of design professionals, discriminating consumers and media. Each of the 50,000 visitors who annually attend, are in the market to source, specify or purchase design products and services. The show will take place at the Direct Energy Centre in Exhibition Place. More information about the show can be found at www.interiordesignshow.ca.

"Given Audi's design expertise and the icon status of the TT for its signature lines, it only made sense that we introduce this car to an audience that best appreciates design. We are proud to be part of this prestigious show and are interested to hear both the interior and exterior design opinions of the participants," said Diego Ramos, Head of Audi Canada.

True to its iconic design, the new Roadster perfectly balances a commanding visual presence with absolute sports car power. With its rigorous geometry and clarity, the design of the first TT Roadster elevated it to the status of a cult classic. Audi has preserved the charismatic design idiom and carefully honed it for the new model.

The face of the new Audi TT Roadster has an expressive feel. Wing-shaped plastic elements are embedded into the slanted, sharply tapered headlights to emphasize the three-dimensional depth of the lamp units. At the rear of the car, it is the large tailpipes and the wide diffuser which stand out. The tube-shaped reflectors seem to hover inside the tail light units.

Guests who deposit their business card at the Audi display on the night of the unveiling are eligible to win the use of a TT Roadster for a weekend later this year. The TT Roadster will be on display for the duration of the Interior Design Show and will be joined by a TT Coupe to give exhibition attendees a look at the entire Audi TT family. The TT Coupe enjoyed its Canadian premiere earlier this year at the Montreal International Auto Show. Saab Ice Experience Provides a Cab on the Rocks!

Saab 9-3 Convertible
Saab 9-3 Convertible in Ice Garage

Saab customers, VIP guests and dealers from all over the world are being greeted with ‘a cab on the rocks’ when they arrive for the Saab Ice Experience event at Sweden’s world famous ICE HOTEL.

Saab broke the ice when it pioneered the concept of an open-top car providing practical, all-year-round transport. So it was clearly a cool idea to ‘freeze frame’ the latest Saab 9-3 Convertible in a garage made from ice at the hotel, near Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

Visible at night from a kilometer away, the icy reflections of the Convertible’s illuminated bright blue paintwork give arriving guests an automotive interpretation of the Northern Lights. The installation, added to this year’s version of the ICE HOTEL, is made from 60 ice blocks, weighing 30 tonnes, all harvested from the nearby Torne river, one of Europe’s purest.

Saab is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and the new Anniversary Convertible model was chosen to light up the sky. About 500 guests will attend the event, which finishes on 18 March, although test driving will not include the ice-bound Convertible.

”Snow and ice are core elements of Scandinavian nature, so it was a very natural step for us to adopt this theme for our Convertible, the original car for all seasons.” says Marie Larsson, Saab's Event Project Manager.

“Sweden also has a strong tradition for environmental care. For example, the ice used to build this hotel is a renewable resource that is recycled each year when it melts and returns to the river. In a similar way, our Saab BioPower engines are able to run on bioethanol, a renewable fuel with a greatly reduced CO2 impact.”

Subaru Impreza WRX STi Photography by Webb Bland

(Notes by Webb Bland) As a freelance automotive photographer, I enjoy shooting of a wide variety of automobiles. I don't focus strictly on exotics or a certain brand; I shoot what's pleasing to the eye, be it an Audi or an Aston Martin. Thus, my growing collection of photographs concerns a great assortment of different vehicles ranging from the Ferrari Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT super-exotics, to the more "modest" Volkswagen GTI and Subaru WRX STi.
Fine art prints of my photos are available from my website.

These two STi's belong to two of my good friends, Keith and Randy, who own the black 2005 and blue 2004 respectively.

Adventures in Oz With the Corvette Z06

GYMPIE, Australia — Remember the name Performax International. We're talking about a small Australian importer that has pulled off a rather remarkable feat: It has built what is claimed to be the world's first right-hand-drive conversion of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Corvette Z06Furthermore, the company, formerly known as Corvette Queensland, already has sold three copies to Australian enthusiasts since December and reckons it can build and sell up to two dozen a year. Including taxes and the cost of the four-week conversion, the asking price Down Under is U.S. $189,000 — nearly three times the Z06's $70,000 U.S. sticker.

Performax also offers RHD conversions of the standard C6 Vette coupe and convertible, priced from around U.S. $140,000, and is reportedly working on a conversion of the Ford Mustang GT. The latter model is expected to reach Aussie dealerships in spring 2008, priced at "only" U.S. $80,000.

Tesla Motors To Build WhiteStar Electric Sedan in New Mexico

SANTA FE, New Mexico — Tesla Motors says it will build a $35 million assembly plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to make its WhiteStar all-electric sedan starting in fall 2009. It is the company's first assembly plant in the United States.

tesla motors roadsterThe San Carlos, California-based Tesla said it will produce at least 10,000 units of the five-passenger sedan each year at the new plant. The vehicles will cost $50,000 for the standard model or $65,000 for a premium model with "greater performance and range." Tesla has predicted the WhiteStar will have a range of about 250 miles.

Tesla continues to be on a roll. It plans to launch production of its first vehicle — a striking, $100,000 all-electric roadster that sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds — this year at a U.K. plant owned by Lotus Cars. It also opened a new tech center in Rochester Hills, Michigan, earlier this year to develop the WhiteStar.

The state of New Mexico said it is looking into the purchase of 100 WhiteStar vehicles for the state fleet over a two-year period as a demonstration of its commitment to clean energy.

Suzuki's "World Debut"

GENEVA — Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor, which has partnerships around the world, sent out a press release this week touting the upcoming "world debut" of its new SX4 sedan. Trouble is, we've actually seen this vehicle previously — in another country, with another badge, from another manufacturer.

suzuki new Tianyu sedansuzuki new Tianyu sedan 2Last fall at the Beijing Motor Show, Chinese automaker Changan Auto pulled the wraps off its new Tianyu sedan. Changan is partnered with several different overseas manufacturers, including Ford and Suzuki. The Tianyu, in fact, is none other than the SX4 sedan.

The SX4 sedan is the four-door notchback companion to the five-door SX4 compact crossover that was introduced last year in the United States. It is expected to share the five-door's 143-horsepower DOHC 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and most of its running gear. It will go on sale later this year at U.S. dealerships as a 2008 model.

Suzuki's Geneva stand also will feature the Splash, a sneak peek at the company's forthcoming European MPV, as well as the latest iteration of Suzuki's WRC challenger, which enters competition in August.

New OETTINGER-TT

As opposed to many others, at OETTINGER's in Friedrichsdorf they have not succumbed to the temptation of over-loading the new development of the Audi design star by adding the usual pretentious add-ons with air intakes widely ajar and huge spoiler-works supposed to enhance the impression of sportive power. Far from it, the people in Friedrichsdorf have restricted themselves to two modest prolongations of the front skirt together with a simple carbon splitter, and lateral sillboards, which rarely ever have so perfectly taken up the line of an Audi. At the stern they content themselves with a rear-skirt insert forming a perfect frame for the (up to 4, if required) rear exhaust pipes of the OETTINGER stainless-steel exhaust systems. In short: The traditional specialists' aerodynamic package combines a sportive character with unequalled elegance and perfect style.

oettinger audi ttoettinger audi tt 2oettinger audi tt 3Particularly from the rear-view mirror the TT's impression has become much more awe-inspiring through the forward-facing new design. And there is really something behind: Several new aspects of increased performance are responsible that the motor keeps the promise made by the appearance.

The 2.0 T-FSI is upgraded to 235 HP and a torque of 280 lb ft. As usual, also in the course of this development the driving characteristics and a broadly applicable torque were much more important within the specifications than the nominal performance output. Other tuners may play games – OETTINGER stands for true performance.

For those who demand higher performance, the tuning specialist from Hesse offers another impressive kit for the 2.0 T-FSI: Thanks to the new motor mapping, the modified fuel-injection pump, adapted FSI injection nozzles, an enhanced charge-air cooler, and the larger OETTINGER charger – all these together serve to elicit 350 HP and 347 lb ft from the aggregate. The mirror-finished stainless-steel exhaust system with its sports-catalytic converter has its share, of course, just as the new reinforced clutch system and driving disk. Summing up: A valuation of the OETTINGER TT has the following most important figures to show: Acceleration 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and a top speed of about 270 km/h!

An especially adapted stainless-steel threaded gear performs the perfect grip of the new wheel-/tyre combination: The new OETTINGER Type RXX wheel, which celebrated its world premiere mounted on the new OETTINGER-TT in its 20"-version, fitted with the new types: VA 245/30/20 and HA 245/30/20 will also be shown for the first time at the Essen Motor Show (the versions 19" and
22" will follow).

Edo Unleashes 800-HP Maserati MC 12XX

AHLEN, Germany — Confessing that it was "never very happy with the Maserati MC 12," German tuner Edo Competition has unleashed the Maserati MC 12XX. The aim of this iteration is to hit "Ferrari FXX power levels," Edo said.

Edo 800-HP Maserati MC 12XXEdo 800-HP Maserati MC 12XX 2 The Maserati MC 12XX is equipped with a 6.3-liter V12 engine that churns out 800 horses and 575 pound-feet of torque. Edo says it's a 170-hp boost over the Maserati MC 12R, thanks to FXX-like steel cylinder and piston, new Titan valve springs and connecting rods, new exhaust manifolds and a new clutch. The MC 12XX has a maximum speed of 242 mph.

Edo says that the volume of the exhaust is adjustable via a button and that the car is equipped with new Michelin racing wheels. The kit includes one-day testing with an instructor, data recording and hospitality on a racetrack.

Vaux in the box

Ah, the great gap between concept and reality.
We rather liked the Vauxhall Antara concept that we saw a year-and-a-half ago - a swoopy, funky little SUV with coupe stylings.
Eighteen months on and this is what we get as a production model. A dull-as-daytime-TV soft-roader.

vauxhallvauxhall 2vauxhall 3Targeting the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 - and impressively managing to be even more anodyne and unthreatening than either - the Antara is Vauxhall's first 4x4 since the Frontera died a little-mourned death in 2004.

Perhaps its most telling feature is what Vauxhall is calling Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive.

Basically it means that the Antara operates in two-wheel-drive mode for everyday, on-road use, and only switches to the full-four when it hits the slippery stuff.

Call us cynics, but we don't reckon that'll happen often in Bromley.

This half-baked four-wheel-drive system does at least have the benefit of decent economy.

The two-litre turbodiesel - yep, that's the top-of-the-range engine - returns 38mpg on the combined cycle, or for big thrills you could choose the 2.4-litre four-pot petrol unit.

The diesel comes with the option of a five-speed manual or auto gearbox, while you'll have to make do with the manual 'box if you specify the petrol engine.

Elsewhere, kit levels are pretty comprehensive with top spec 'SE' models getting, well, just about everything. Good thing too, as a range-topping Antara will set you back £27,695 when it arrives in July.

Audi S5 Photos

Less than twenty four hours after the first images of the Audi A5 coupe surfaced on the internet, come four more photos revealing its S5 performance sibling. Judging by file name structure and a quick poll of Audi contacts, the photos you see here are most definitely the real thing.

Up until now we’ve known the S5 would be launched either immediately or not far behind the A5, and that the car would likely feature a stepped-up version of Audi’s 4.2 that would include FSI and possibly the new Valvelift technology in order to bump power.

Audi S5Audi S5 2Audi S5 3
Audi S5 4Looking at these few leaked photos, you can see that the S5 boasts a more aggressive front fascia and S-car trademark grey grille. New to an S-car is what appears to be an aluminum segment mounted on the center of the chin spoiler. This could be an optical illusion as the car itself is silver, but the segment appears to be of accenting aluminum and more like elements we’ve seen on the allroad if that is the case.

The front shot of the car also shows, for the first time, the lit LED daytime running lights. Much inspired by those on the R8, the rounded bars of light redefine the shape of the lights when they are activated.

Quad exhaust tips and a corresponding center aluminum segment help further the car at the rear.

Inside, we can see several new design elements. An RS 4-inspired shift knob is similar to the one seen in A5 photos, though it gets white stitching on the steering wheel and shift boot much like the S8 and S6.

The two-material trim style at the belt looks much-inspired by the interior of the A6, so its aluminum and carbon fiber mix are not surprisingly very close in appearance and feel to that of the S6. You can just make out the carbon fiber trim on the center console accent and on the left of the interior photo where it is fitted to the driver’s side door.

A start button on the center console, also seen in the other A5 shots, looks to be replaced with an equivalent silver aluminum version.

As you can see in the S5, the dash-mounted MMI controls are relocated to the center console just below the shifter for cars with Navigation and the optional in-dash CD changer.

So does the surfacing of these photos indicate that the S5 will be at Geneva? With the also-expected intro of the BMW M3, that would be quite a rivalry and quite a Geneva not-to-miss. While one contact earlier suggested this could happen, more recent and likely suggestion is that the car will show up at one of the smaller shows later this Spring.

2007 Maserati GranTurismo

(from Maserati Press Release) Modena - 20th February 2007. The new Maserati GranTurismo, styled by Pininfarina, makes its worldwide debut at the Geneva Motorshow.

2007 Maserati GranTurismo2007 Maserati GranTurismo 2
2007 Maserati GranTurismo 32007 Maserati GranTurismo 4The Maserati GranTurismo is a muscular and sporty car, that can be enjoyed every day and at the same time is engaging for the driver. Its excellent handling and sportiveness makes it a point of reference in its category. The Maserati GranTurismo is built with particular attention to comfort, choice of materials and details and with enough room for four people, as only Maserati can do.

The new Maserati GranTurismo is a high-performance sports car, exciting to drive with a 4.2 liter V8 engine, delivering 405 HP, and a weight distribution of 49% at the front and 51% at the rear. It is fitted with an automatic gearbox and equipped with an adaptive control system which adjusts the gear-shifting mode to the driving style and the driving conditions.

Maserati's tradition of the Gran Turismo concept dates back to 1947 when the Trident Company, following its clients' demand, unveiled at the Geneva Motorshow its first Gran Turismo, the A6, designed by the great Pinin Farina. It was the first Maserati road car and was produced in 58 units. The car was acclaimed by the automotive press for its advanced technical content and for its avant-garde style solutions.

The new model name - Maserati GranTurismo - is not incidental. Once again, the partnership between Maserati and Pininfarina gives birth to a car that is able to generate emotions and sets itself apart from competitors, due to the technique with which it is built and its unique style.

The new Maserati GranTurismo represents a further step towards the completion of the Trident product range, following the worldwide launch of the Quattroporte Automatic at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Video: Nissan Qashqai Going For The Rodney Mullen In All Of Us

Nissan’s new Qashqai crossover SUV is launching everywhere else in the world (there’s no plan at this point to bring to the States) and with it, a new advertising campaign from the geniuses at TBWA in London (TBWA Chiat Day runs the Nissan/Infiniti accounts in the U.S.). The TV spot, featured here in a YouTube clip, shows the car “skateboarding” through urban traffic. The skateboarder in us loves the kick flip (invented by Rodney Mullen in the 1980s, who we wanted to be so badly during our skinned-knee days), and the car enthusiast in us loves the accurate look and feel of the suspension movements. The car actually looks like it’s jouncing and rebounding from a giant skateboarder’s weight. How did they do that? Millions of dollars of CGI is the likely answer.

Alfa / Picchio racer

Alfa Romeo could soon be taking on the world in endurance racing if Italian firm Picchio has its way.

Alfa romeo picchio racerAlfa romeo picchio racer 2Already an established race car builder, Picchio has come up with a concept based on the gorgeous 8C Competizione coupe, although the vehicle would probably be a mid-engined machine.

The rules in the American Grand-Am Cup allow a car's shape to be developed from the existing road car, and the engine supplier can be identified as the car's manufacturer.

Alfa Romeo is believed to be looking at homologating the 8C's engine already.

Picchio is the only European race car manufacturer in the Grand-Am series at present with its DP2 racer, which the Alfa would be based on.

If the Alfa/Picchio racer gets the go-ahead, it could be on the grid from 2008.

Final flicker for Skoda's hot hatch

Skoda is pulling the curtain down on the Fabia vRS, but not before one final swansong.

Fabia vRS special editionThe sporty Fabia is bowing out with a limited edition called the Special Edition, a name that must have taxed the marketing department no end.

There's no extra oomph, but the Special Edition does come with black leather seats with the car's individual number sewn in, metallic blue paint and red brake callipers.

There's also cruise control and a CD autochanger, and Skoda tells us this all adds up to £2,000 worth of extras.

The price of the Special Edition is £12,990, or £615 more than a standard Fabia vRS.

If you fancy one, you'd better get in quick to nab one of the 1,000 cars being made because it's a strict first come, first served basis before the new Fabia goes on sale in the UK in May.

If you want a new shape Fabia vRS, you'll have to wait until mid-2008.

Audi R8 Debuts at the Canadian International Autoshow

AJAX, ONTARIO - On the heels of the much anticipated TT Coupe launch in Montreal last month, Audi Canada is pleased to debut the R8 in Toronto at the Canadian International Autoshow.

audi r8Audi has incorporated the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8, into a spectacular sports car. As the first Audi mid-engined sports car, the R8 combines Audi's experience gained from numerous motorsport triumphs with groundbreaking design and the acknowledged technological expertise of the brand.
The mid-mounted V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame aluminum body form the basis for truly outstanding driving dynamics. At 7,800 rpm the 4.2-liter engine delivers 420 hp of power output. Peak torque is 317 ft.-lbs. from 4.500 to 6,000 rpm. No less than 90 percent of this maximum torque is maintained consistently throughout a wide engine speed range from 3,500 all the way to 7,600 rpm.
The performance figures are equally impressive: the R8 accelerates from a standstill to 100 kph in 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 295 kph.

Among the multitude of unique design fixtures found on the R8, the integrated side blade, which is available in three different and distinct styles, allows for greater personalization while giving the body contour and texture.
The aerodynamics experts at Audi have done their work so thoroughly on the R8 that, as an added benefit of its elegant shape, the body actually produces a downforce - unlike many other sports cars. The ability to personalize the vehicle to the customer's personal preferences continues with the interior, where a wide array of options such as the 12 speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, trim options to accent the exterior, and a variety of perfectly accentuated leather colours are available.

Look for the first fortunate Audi R8 customers to be driving on Canadian roads by year's end.

2006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT

(from H&R Springs Press Release) ‘FMJ’, the most recent H&R Mustang project, debuted at the 2006 SEMA Show with huge success. Drawing from a rich heritage of high performance Ford Mustangs, the H&R ‘FMJ’ project – short for “Full Metal Jacket” which is a type of bullet – is inspired by the 1960’s movie Bullitt and its namesake Ford Mustang.

2006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT2006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT 22006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT 3
2006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT 42006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT 5 The subtle ‘less is more’ styling of the Bullitt era is embodied by the ‘FMJ’ project. Subtle styling cues include the custom black satin finish Shelby billet grille and California front spoiler with custom purpose built front splitter. In the back of ‘FMJ’ a carbon fiber rear lip hides the factory third brake light and an integral LED brake light has been seamlessly integrated into the rear of the awesome all-glass Glassback roof. This “subtle”, yet distinct, H&R built Mustang is most notably set apart from the pack of gaudily painted and stickered custom Mustangs with its restrained light grey paint – a 1950’s Porsche 356 Speedster color.

Current power upgrades include an SCT re-calibrated engine control computer, MRT cold air intake, and stainless steel H-pipe and hi-flow catalysts with Flowmaster mufflers. For improved acceleration, the ‘FMJ’ differential has been re-geared to 3.73:1 and is now enclosed with a new Ford Racing differential cover and body color powder coated rear axle. Motul fluids keep all the power parts well lubricated and at peak performance.

The H&R ‘FMJ’ Mustang isn’t just fast in a straight line though. H&R has developed premium suspension and sway bars for the Ford Mustang GT that elevates the ‘FMJ’ handling into a league of its own. Unmatched performance and comfort is provided by specially designed height adjustable H&R coil overs for the Mustang GT, allowing both front and rear ride height adjustment. The rear is fitted with easy to use H&R exclusive height adjusters that allow easy adjustment to the rear ride height. Huge H&R sway bars – measuring 36mm front and 26mm rear – minimize body roll and increase traction in the turns, allowing ‘FMJ’ to harness the full performance potential of its massive wheels and tires; Custom O.Z. Superleggera III wheels with matching satin black centers from the Tire Rack – measuring 9 x 20 inches front and 11.5 x 20 inches rear – allow the fitment of stream roller sized Pirelli Pzero tires – 275/35R 20 front and 315/35R 20. The tread width of each rear tire measures 12.6-inches making a combined width of more than 25-inches of rubber on the ground!

To harness the full potential of the tremendous amount of rubber on the ground, massive Baer brakes were fitted – the rotors measure 15-inches front and 14-inches rear! Bright orange painted calipers create a nice accent and provide a good indicator of the stopping potential hidden within.

And of course no serious project vehicle is complete without interior modifications and the ‘FMJMustang is as serious as they come. The interior features an over-the-top look with its dark brown stressed leather and diamond stitch pattern on the seats, door panels, and center console. A complete Pioneer Premier Audio system was installed for optimum sound imaging. Controlled by a Pioneer DEH-P880PRS head unit, the system features three Pioneer amps for a total of 2400 watts power, interior style matched tweeters, and a 12-inch sub. All the components were chosen for their clean lines and visuals that match the ‘FMJ’ project theme perfectly, controls all. A few finishing touches to the interior include a Custom gauge panel above the head unit – fitted with three Autometer Cobalt gauges: Volt, Vacuum, and Engine/Diffential Oil temperature – and an MRT orange shift knob.

The H&R ‘FMJ’ Mustang debuted with rave reviews there was something for everybody, from the subtle styling to the awesome interior and modern audio system. ‘FMJ’ proved to be right on target!

Coupe de grace: New Maserati Coupe

These are the first sketches of the new Maserati Coupe, due to debut at the International Motor Show in early March. Suddenly two weeks seems like a very long time to wait.

New Maserati CoupeNew Maserati Coupe 2
New Maserati Coupe 3The Coupe looks to be based on a shortened version of the Quattroporte, and should be available in three different body styles - Spyder, 2+2 and hardtop convertible.

Under the bonnet, well, we're not promising anything, but best guesses indicate that the Coupe will be powered by the 4.3-litre V8 from Ferrari's F430.

However, there are rumblings that Maserati could even bore that engine out to five litres to produce 470bhp, while at the lower end of the power scale, the option of a reworked BiTurbo version of the V6 from Alfa's 159 has also been mooted.

Although the previous generation Coupe was styled by Italian genius Giorgetto Giugiaro, Maserati has put the design of the new Coupe in the hands of Pininfarina - responsible for the Quattroporte, as well as the Ferrari Enzo and P4/5.

If you hadn't guessed yet, we reckon it looks gorgeous. How much of the hyper-muscular swooping styling makes it to production remains to be seen.

But if it turns out to look even a 10th as good as these sketches, we'll happily sell our family pets to unscrupulous fast food manufacturers to lay our hands on one.

Audi Readies Two World Launches, Expected to Be A5 plus... ?

Audi has shared a short brief announcing their press conference at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March. Ingolstadt has already confirmed that the A5 would be one of the introductions, stated by Audi AG boss Rupert Stadler at a roundtable discussion in Detroit in January.

audi a5
Just what the second launch will be has not been officially confirmed, though two hypotheses on the subject have suggested either and S version of the A5 dubbed S5, or a small SUV to position under the Q7 and going by the name Q5.

The official Audi text reads:

Two world premieres await visitors to the Audi Press Conference at the Geneva Motor Show.

Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management at AUDI AG, will unveil the new Audi models during the Audi Press Conference:
Tuesday, 6 March 2007, 8.00 am, Audi Stand, Hall 1, Palais des Expositions, Geneva.

Sources close to Fourtitude have mentioned that the S5 would be "launching immediately", though we now believe immediately does not mean Geneva. New York perhaps? Not the largest show on the docket, it is the only major show between now and Frankfurt in September and it's a strong market for Audi of America. Either way, solid and more recent information says no S5 at Geneva.

The second theory comes from several online blogs claim that the official Geneva Auto Show website listed the Audi Q5 as an introduction earlier today, along with a known computer-generated rendition that was originally published by WorldCarFans.com. There is no way to verify the presence of the Q5 on the Geneva site, as those same websites also report that the news was removed from teh site earlier today as well. While possible, the likelihood of the Q5 bowing in Geneva is unlikely based on what we've heard.

What will the second model be? Ingolstadt and Auburn Hills are staying mum. A new engine in an existing model is the only other information we can glean. RS 6? R8 V10? Unlikely on both counts, but who knows. Consider us eating our hat. We thought we had this one figured out. Apparently not.

The image above, a computer-generated impression of what the A5 will look like, is not the actual car that is expected to be shown. Instead, it is our best attempt to depict the car based on test mules spied in various parts of the world and known Audi design cues.

This website will be posting news from Geneva and thus will be covering the debut in its entirety.

Nissan Pioneers Fuel-Cell Limo with Nissan X-TRAIL FCV

World's first fuel-cell-powered hired-car service begins

Nissan X-TRAIL fuel-cell vehicle
Nissan X-TRAIL FCV (fuel-cell vehicle) powered by hydrogen fuel cells

TOKYO (Feb. 20, 2007) -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., yesterday delivered to Kanagawa Toshi Kotsu Ltd. the latest version Nissan X-TRAIL FCV (fuel-cell vehicle) powered by hydrogen fuel cells to be used as part of their chauffer-driven hired-car fleet. This is the first time that a fuel-cell vehicle has been made available for hired-car services, providing consumers with the opportunity to experience the performance and benefits of advanced clean technology.

Each Nissan X-TRAIL FCV employs an original Nissan fuel-cell stack and compact li-ion batteries capable of delivering the same level of performance as the gasoline-powered Nissan X-TRAIL. Nissan original fuel-cell stack delivers an enhanced power output of up to 90 kilowatts with maximum speed and acceleration on a par with the gasoline engine.

Fuel-cell technology provides zero emission motoring - other than water vapor - by using two renewable elements - oxygen and hydrogen gases - that are naturally abundant in the air we breathe. The technology lies in the chemical fusion reaction between the hydrogen fuel and oxygen to release electric energy and water as the only by-product.

Under the Nissan Green Program 2010, Nissan will offer advanced technology and products to help make real-world reductions in CO2 emissions, including further practical use of fuel-cell vehicles. Since April 2006, Nissan has enabled consumers to experience the performance and benefits of fuel-cell-powered vehicles by making them available for test-drives at the Nissan Gallery located at its head-office in Ginza, Tokyo.

WR Trivia: What Bones Lurk Underneath This Vitesse Cabrio?

vitesse-1.jpgvitesse-2.jpg

Never seen one before? Neither have we. This is the Vitesse Cabrio, a kit car made by Gulf Coast Motors. So… what’s underneath?

You’ll have to click through to the jump to find out…

1990-honda-civic-si-red.jpg

Yep. It’s based on Honda’s humble 1988-1991 Civic Hatchback. If you’re guessing that Vitesse Cabrio intenders have a lot of work ahead of them, we are too. Perhaps those scared off by the necessary beheading would appreciate the Coupe version more, which is based on a CRX of the same vintage–and looks quite a bit more attractive to boot (that upright windshield header does the droptop Vitesse no favors).

vitesse-3.jpgvitesse-4.jpg1989-honda-civic-crx-si-yel.jpg

Pricing? Cabrio-minded buyers should expect to shell out $4500 for the basic kit (front clip, rear clip, hood, trunk lid, door skins, side skirts, and emblem), and cabrio, but completists will want the Deluxe kit, that adds the convertible top, fasteners and framing, and all applicable lighting fixtures.

Coupe buyers have it somewhat easier, paying $3500 for the necessary bodywork, and $400 for a lighting package.

High performance R-badged Touareg on its way

Volkswagen is working on a new hard-edged ‘R’ version of its Touareg SUV to join the Passat R36 and Golf R32 in its performance car lineup. Unlike the gasoline engines found in the R36 and R32, AutoTelegraaf reports that the R-Touareg will get a more powerful version of the 4.9L V10 TDI diesel engine. Apparently, the information was leaked by an overzealous VW employee during a media presentation.

German tuners have already squeezed around 365hp from this engine, but this engine is all about the massive torque figures, which should border on the ridiculous with the uprated engine. The standard model gets 750Nm, but at least one tuner has broken the 850Nm mark already. It’s also likely the Touareg will be called the R50 if it follows the naming convention of its stablemates.

The final version will most likely resemble the R-line Touareg (pictured) that’s currently available as a package through VW Individual, VW’s own customizing company. Expect the R-Touareg to feature a similar bumper design, the same subtle spoilers and a sporty wheel and tire combo.

It’s possible this Touareg will be joined by a more powerful 450hp version equipped with a W12 engine, but it seems unlikely as it would be competition for the Audi Q7 V12 TDI.

Menacing ROUSH Stage 3 BlackJack Mustang Set to Stalk the Highways

PRESS RELEASE:

MENACING ROUSH STAGE 3 BLACKJACK MUSTANG SET TO STALK THE HIGHWAYS

If Batman owned a Mustang, the new 2007 ROUSH Stage 3 BlackJack would most certainly be the ride of choice for the Caped Crusader. This menacing 430 horsepower tone-on-tone limited edition pony car comes straight from the mind of Jack Roush himself and is set to stalk the streets of Gotham City, and the rest of the country.

Jack Roush had the vision, and the ROUSH Stage 3 BlackJack Mustang is the result. He personally developed the content of this black-on-black car, and a prototype build was his vehicle of choice while at many of the NASCAR Nextel Cup events during the 2006 season. That particular Mustang recently ended up on the Barrett-Jackson auction block as an extremely collectible one-of-a-kind car. Now, ROUSH Performance is set to offer a limited edition run of 100 ROUSH Stage 3 BlackJack Mustangs, all of which have been pre-sold through their ROUSH-authorized Ford dealer base.

"I am involved with all the vehicles that ROUSH Performance builds, but the Stage 3 BlackJack is really the first one which was entirely my design and I am quite proud of how well it turned out," said Jack Roush. "When I drove the prototype around the NASCAR tracks last season it got a lot of attention, mainly due to the intimidating theme of the car. Of course, the distinctive rumble of a ROUSHcharged™ V-8 engine turns a lot of heads, too."

Jack Roush's heritage as the winningest name in racing reverberates throughout the vehicle, starting with the powertrain which is what ROUSH Performance is so well known for. The polished ROUSHcharger™ system with a smaller pulley boosts the horsepower to 430 (with 400 lb.-ft. torque) which is the most in the history of the company. This system includes a Roots-style M90 supercharger, 38 lb.-hr. fuel injectors, ROUSH-designed intake manifold, intercooler assembly with radiator and a custom ROUSH ECM calibration to maximize optimal fuel and spark.

Aesthetics were also a big part of Roush's vision for the Stage 3 BlackJack, starting with the matte black 21-inch stripe across the center of the black paint and the addition of the seven-piece ROUSH aerobody kit. Polished billet aluminum accessories, such as radiator, oil and strut tower caps, can be found throughout the engine compartment which contributes to the exciting package for street or track driving. Enthusiast drivers will immediately notice the handling of the vehicle has been improved by the addition of the Stage 3 suspension package which swaps out the stock front struts, rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear sway bar and jounce bumpers for ROUSH-engineered high performance versions.

Roush was also adamant about including the new ROUSH wheel hop reduction kit to help the rear wheel performance in low traction conditions. This is the only wheel hop kit on the market with a minimal NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) hit and no reduction in bushing life. Other manufacturers trade off anti-hop for a lot of noise, harshness and poor durability of the joints. The stopping rate is greatly improved with the addition of the ROUSH brake kit, a 14-inch, two-piece slotted rotor with four-piston calipers on the front and slotted rear rotors.

Interior upgrades include charcoal leather seating with an embroidered Stage 3 BlackJack logo, white electroluminescent gauges, billet aluminum pedal kit and short throw shifter with black shifter ball. The car comes standard with the ROUSH carbon fiber design dash trim kit and embroidered floor mats. Even the door sills have been upgraded in this model.

A ROUSH Stage 3 BlackJack serialized badge is riveted to the engine compartment, along with a Stage 3 signature badge which is personally engraved with the signature of the ROUSH Performance technician which hand-assembled the vehicle in the company's Livonia, Mich., facility. To further validate the 100 cars, each will come with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jack Roush.

Once you get behind the wheel you will immediately see why we claim that "Between a race car and a road car... Is a ROUSH car."

First Drive: 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R and SE-R Spec V

The latest SE-R is crisp and fun to drive, despite an upright stance and low-tech suspension design.

Previews

We’re going to come right out and say it: the new Nissan Sentra SE-R (above) does not recall the glory days of the original 1991-1994 SE-R. Actually, it’s unlikely that any Sentra SE-R will top the adulation for the initial version, given the positive taint that years of nostalgia have bestowed upon it. The first SE-R is a lot like your first kiss or your first batch of pancakes, both of which were probably sloppy and not as delicious as you now fondly remember. Since the first generation, the subsequent two generations were met with indifference and disappointment. So maybe the new, fourth-generation SE-R can’t top the original, but it’s vastly better than the previous model, at least when it comes to driving. As before, the hot Sentra comes in two versions: SE-R, and Spec V (next page). The SE-R comes only with a CVT, and the higher-output Spec V engine is mated to a six-speed manual.

Exterior and Interior

We’re still getting used to the upright looks of the Sentra, which shares a platform with the Renault Megane. The SE-R makes an effort to correct the awkward proportions with 17-inch wheels, aggressive front and rear fascias, and a rear spoiler. The effect is a subtle improvement, but it will never, ever be called pretty.

On the inside, there’s an oil pressure gauge and a g-meter to measure acceleration and deceleration. The rest of the interior is mostly unchanged from the Sentra, except for new front seats with red stitching and SE-R logos on the headrests; the Spec V gets the added flair of red seat belts. Despite the sporty looks of the front buckets, the side bolsters don’t do much to hold your upper body in place, and while the seat bottom accommodates cheeseburger-laden waistlines, skinnier posteriors will slide around during hard cornering. The Sentra SE-R has a 13-cubic-foot trunk and rear seats that can hold fully-grown adults. Front, front-side, and head curtain airbags are standard.

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood is the 2.5-liter QR25DE inline-four, which is also used in the Altima. In the SE-R, it makes 177 horsepower and 172 pound feet of torque. The Spec V has a higher compression ratio (10.5 versus 9.6), a 7000 rpm redline (up from 6200), and unique intake and exhaust manifolds, connecting rods, pistons, and camshafts to increase output to 200 hp and 180 lb-ft. The CVT in the SE-R works in automatic mode, or the driver can use steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles to operate in manumatic mode. SE-R engines will run on regular unleaded; the Spec V requires premium.

Chassis and Driving Impressions

Chassis

Behind the 17-inch wheels are 11.7-inch front and 11.5 inch rear disc brakes in the SE-R; the Spec V upgrades to 12.6-inch rotors. ABS is standard, but the Sentra SE-R is one of the only sporty compacts extant that doesn’t offer stability control. In the SE-R, stiffer springs are the only other major chassis change from the base Sentra. The Spec V goes a step further with more aggressive summer tires, 0.4-inch lower springs, a larger 25mm front stabilizer bar, and extra bracing in the front and rear. The Spec V also offers an optional helical limited-slip front differential. Both cars retain the front strut and torsion-beam rear suspension setup. Despite being less sophisticated than an independent rear suspension, Nissan engineers claim the torsion beam gives the rear end enough stiffness without creating a harsh ride.

Driving Impressions

The engine starts (via an optional keyless system in the SE-R) and runs with remarkable smoothness—especially compared with the thrashy mill in the previous-generation SE-R. That smoothness continues all the way up to the 7000 rpm redline in the Spec V, and a soft rev limiter lets the engine sit exactly at the redline. The exhaust note is noticeable but not at all loud—most owners will probably look for an aftermarket exhaust. In manual mode, the SE-R effects gearshifts at its lower redline, whether the driver likes it or not. Nissan is optimistic about the CVT—the company sees the SE-R model as an alternative for customers who live in high-traffic areas where shifting is a pain. The manual mode is meant to bestow the automatic with some semblance of sportiness, and indeed it switches between the six pre-set ratios quickly and with almost zero delay. But unlike conventional automatics with a manumatic mode or dual-clutch manuals, the CVT keeps engine revs relatively constant, so ultimately you’ll get better engine response by leaving the transmission in automatic mode. The short-throw six speed in the Spec V is an improvement over the rubbery shift lever in the standard Sentra.

On the road, the Spec V accelerates with gusto, and the SE-R is similarly quick but feels like it’s lacking more than the 8 pound-feet of torque stated in the specifications. The Spec V engine works best above 4000 rpm, close to its 5200 rpm torque peak, and while it’s not nearly as asthmatic at low revs as the Honda Civic Si, it lacks low-end punch. Neither car feels as fast as more powerful competitors—or even the 200-hp turbocharged Volkswagen GTI. The upside is that the Spec V is usually rolling by the time significant torque kicks in, so torque steer is kept to a minimum. That alone makes the new SE-R better than its predecessor, but the new car has more to offer than that, like excellent balance. Upon entering a corner, the front end grips nicely and resists transitioning into understeer. Lift up on the throttle or jab the brakes and the back end will step out slightly—not a scary amount, but enough that the car can be positioned with the throttle. And speaking of the brakes, the bite is substantial and we noticed no fade. Unfortunately the steering, which is boosted electrically, is not quite as solid as the rest of the car. There’s a good feel for what’s going on with the car itself, but the road feel—what’s going on beneath the tires—is somewhat isolated.
The Verdict

The Sentra SE-R and SE-R Spec V aren’t quite as lively as the outgoing Mini Cooper S, but they hold their own compared with four-door sporty compacts. The Sentra SE-R Spec V edges the Honda Civic Si on turn-in, power, ride comfort, and overall livability. If the Sentra isn’t quite as refined as the Volkswagen GTI, it isn’t as expensive, either. Sure, the SE-R, even in Spec V trim, isn’t as extreme as the 263-hp Mazdaspeed 3, but the SE-R can still cover miles of curving back roads at high speeds and put a smile on its driver’s face. As a bargain pocket rocket, the new SE-R fits the mold cast by the original, albeit a larger, ungainly mold.

GENEVA, 2007-02-18 - Cadillac will open the next chapter of its 21st century product story, as the 2008 Cadillac CTS sedan makes its European premiere at the 2007 Salon International de l'Auto in Geneva, Switzerland. The new luxury sedan is scheduled to begin production in the United States, in late summer of 2007, with European sales to follow in the fall.

"The all-new CTS has a mission to bring the striking design of a concept car, the performance of a sports car and sophistication of an elegant sedan right into the heart of the luxury market," said Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. "Cadillac is injecting more dramatic character into the normally reserved luxury sedan category."

With a design inspired by Cadillac's landmark Sixteen concept car, the new CTS reinterprets the brand's traditional grandeur in a very contemporary design. CTS employs lessons learned from Cadillac's acclaimed V-Series of high-performance cars, combining sports car-like performance with the poise of prestigious luxury sedans.

Advanced direct-injection gasoline technology helps deliver an estimated 223 kW (300 horsepower) with good fuel efficiency and reduced emissions from its new 3.6L V-6 engine.

The all-new CTS chassis was developed with extensive testing around the globe, from famed German raceways to roads in China and the United States.

Cadillac's first-generation CTS built a strong record of success on many levels, beginning with its debut in 2002. There are about 275,000 CTS owners worldwide, and industry researchers say they are among the most satisfied in the automotive market.

2007 Cadillac SRX receives exterior, interior refinements

The Cadillac SRX luxury crossover enters 2007 with exterior refinements and a completely redesigned interior. The all-new cockpit is more luxurious and spacious, featuring a new instrument panel, hand-wrapped upper trim, console, center stack, door trim, wood trim, analog clock and steering wheel.

The instrument panel and door trim use Cadillac's new cut-and-sew interior process. The vehicle's new cockpit is hand-built, in the same painstaking fashion Cadillac applies to the limited-production STS-V and XLR-V models, bringing elite craftsmanship into the heart of the luxury marketplace.

New for 2007 is the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission, which provides increased performance and fuel efficiency. First introduced on Cadillac's acclaimed STS-V and XLR-V Series in 2006, the new transmission is now standard for the all-wheel-drive V-8 model. A new and competitively priced rear-wheel-drive V-6 model also enters the SRX lineup.

Next-generation Cadillac Escalade debuts

The all-new 2007 Cadillac Escalade, the next generation of the iconic luxury SUV, establishes new levels of power, style and elegance.

Based on General Motors' all-new full-size SUV architecture, the '07 Escalade features new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems deliver a powerful, efficient luxury SUV in the segment, led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V8 engine with variable valve timing technology, delivering 301 kW (409 horsepower) and 565 Nm (417 lb-ft) of torque.

The Cadillac Escalade has a sleek, clean and athletic form with improved aerodynamics. It is instantly identifiable and incorporates styling cues from Cadillac's landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and chrome accents.

A feature-packed, spacious and all-new interior is a cornerstone of the new Cadillac Escalade, and it sets a new standard for refinement. The warm and inviting interior is complemented with premium materials.

The Cadillac Escalade went on sale in Europe at the end of January.

Cadillac STS adds all-wheel drive

The Cadillac STS luxury performance sedan delivers sophisticated luxury in a contemporary package. For 2007, Cadillac is making available all-wheel drive - in combination with the Northstar V-8 engine - to meet the growing demand for this technology.

New for 2007 is the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission that provides increased performance and fuel efficiency; it is standard on AWD and RWD V-8-equipped models. The new transmission features a generous 6.04:1 overall ratio that delivers strong launch acceleration yet provides "tall" overdrive ratios that decrease engine rpm to enhance fuel economy and reduce noise levels while cruising at highway speeds. Estimates by GM engineers have shown an approximately 7-percent improvement in 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) times and up to a 5-percent improvement in fuel efficiency.

2007 Cadillac BLS range expands

The 2007 Cadillac BLS range will be extended by the BLS Sport, which features 18-inch wheels and lowered sport suspension. The revised chassis tuning ensures dynamic handling performance without compromising comfort, and is designed to take full advantage of the BLS range's powerful engines.

The front-wheel-drive BLS offers expressive design combined with outstanding ride and acoustic comfort. It also marks a new era in Cadillac's history by offering an optional direct-injected, common rail turbo-diesel engine that is fitted with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter. Like the turbocharged gasoline engines (129 kW / 175 hp; 154 kW / 210 hp; and 188 kW / 255 hp), the turbo-diesel (110 kW / 150hp) offers the dynamic performance customers have come to expect from Cadillac.

All BLS models equipped with manual transmissions have six speeds. For all gasoline and diesel models equipped with an automatic transmission, a standard Sport Mode button allows the driver to select a sportier transmission shift pattern.

The BLS Sport interior is highlighted by the use of stylish aluminum trim instead of wood and the circular instruments have white numerals and red needles on a black background. A three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and analog clock in the center stack are standard. Optional refinements include leather seating surfaces.

2007 Cadillac XLR-V and 2007 Cadillac STS-V combine power, performance

The supercharged 2007 Cadillac XLR-V and STS-V are Cadillac's most intense expressions of power and performance. Both high-performance vehicles feature Cadillac's cut-and-sew approach to interiors, with extensive use of leather-wrapped interior surfaces created by craftsmen who cut, wrap and sew leather components individually. Each supercharged Northstar V-8 engine powering the XLR-V and STS-V is hand-assembled by a single expert craftsman to exacting standards at GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., USA.

The 2007 Cadillac XLR-V is a landmark car in Cadillac's long history. XLR-V elevates the performance and luxury attributes of the brand's growing V-Series lineup to the fullest extent; it is the quickest, most agile and most exclusive Cadillac model ever offered. The supercharged Northstar V-8 engine delivers 331 kW (448 hp) and 561 Nm (414 lb.-ft.) of torque, elevating the luxury roadster into the exclusive club of vehicles that are capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in less than five seconds.

The 2007 Cadillac STS-V has the sophistication of its STS sibling, but with the uncompromising performance driving experience for which the V-Series is known. The STS-V delivers 350 kW (476 hp) and 595 Nm (439 lb.-ft.) of torque - and is the most powerful Cadillac ever. Like the Cadillac XLR-V, the STS-V is capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in less than five seconds.

Both Cadillac XLR-V and Cadillac STS-V will be in European Cadillac showrooms in April.

80 Years with Volvo Cars

Jubilee theme for Volvo Cars at Techno-Classica show in Essen

Historical Volvo car parade
Historical Volvo car parade: 240, 832, 544, 654, ÖV4

19 Feb. 2007 -- Volvo Cars is back at the world’s largest show for classic cars and everything else to do with the classic-car hobby. The exhibition theme for this year’s Volvo stand is “As times goes by – 80 years with Volvo cars”.

Eight cars trace the company’s history

At this year’s show – held between March 28 and April 1 – it’s the models celebrating even birthdays that are under the spotlight. It is now 80 years since the first Volvo car left the factory in Göteborg, so the company’s first eighty years are being celebrated with the help of ÖV4 and another seven birthday celebrants, each representing a different decade.

Using these landmark models, the exhibition showcases the company’s development from start to today. The older cars may not be very well known outside Sweden. All the more reason, then, to give them their right of place in Essen.

ÖV 4

The open ÖV4 can be seen together with a PV52, an elegant vehicle from the 1930s, the first series of the PV444, an early Amazon, the very first version of the 145 estate car, a 240 in jubilee guise, the sporty 480 Turbo and the very latest addition to Volvo’s model range, the C30 T5. Each model represents a different decade.

Amazon/122
Born in 1956 and featuring a timeless design. The Amazon/122 appealed as much to people then as it does today. Some 35,000 examples are still believed to be in existence around the world.

Award-winning C30 – drawing its inspiration from historical precedent

The Volvo C30 is a small Volvo, youthful and packed with driving pleasure and first-class safety. Its design with the daring rear treatment and glass tailgate is recognizable from Volvo’s previous sports coupe models, the 1800ES and 480ES. In Germany the C30 has already received two highly prestigious awards: Goldenes Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) from one of the major Sunday papers, Bild am Sonntag, and Auto Zeitung’s Auto Trophy award in the best compact car class.

2007 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Hyundai Unveils New "FD" C-Segment Hatchback

GENEVA — Hyundai will take the wraps off the C-segment hatchback that it has code-named FD on March 6 at the Geneva auto show. This is the first car Hyundai has ever designed specifically for Europe. The "FD" was shown in concept last fall at the Paris Motor Show in the guise of the Hyundai Arnejs.

hyundai fd concepthyundai arnejs conceptThe new model is scheduled to reach European showrooms this summer. It is the sister vehicle to the Kia Cee'd. Kia launched the Cee'd five-door hatchback last December and will introduce a sporty wagon variant in Geneva. Like the FD, the Cee'd is a critical product for the Korean manufacturer because the vehicles are designed for the Europe market.

Hyundai revealed few details about the FD, only cryptically saying it would include "generous equipment levels and an up-to-the-minute safety package." But it apparently has dumped the Arnejs nameplate in favor of a new alphanumerical naming strategy for Europe. Hyundai said its new product naming strategy will be introduced in Geneva. Arnejs is pronounced "Ar-nez."

Hyundai said it will also roll out a crossover-SUV concept at Geneva that uses "advanced materials" from its partner GE Plastics.

Chrysler Group SRT and Richard Petty Announce Partnership

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — It seems like a natural. Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology and the Richard Petty Driving Experience announced a new partnership on Thursday designed to make the average Joe or Jane into a better driver.

08 dodge viperIn a joint statement, the two said more than 60 events are planned this year at such venues as Daytona International Speedway, Road America in Wisconsin, Watkins Glen in New York and Phoenix International Raceway. The first event will be held at the Texas Motor Speedway starting on February 23.

Programs include autocross, advanced car control, performance driving and drifting. At the end of each day, participants can ride shotgun and take a hot lap around the track with a Richard Petty Driving Experience professional driver. Vehicles in the program include the Dodge Viper SRT-10 coupe and roadster, along with the Dodge Charger SRT8.

SRT owners get a one-day session rolled into the purchase of their vehicle. Non-SRT owners can participate for $500. The 2007 schedule is available at the Drive SRT Web site.

In Australia, Rumor Mill Running Hot on Holden Exports to U.S. Market

MELBOURNE — If you took notice of all the rumors making the rounds in Australia right now, you'd be betting that the forthcoming VE Commodore Ute — or pickup — will be heading to the United States as the spiritual successor to the Chevrolet El Camino.
holden toranaAt the recent announcement of the VE Commodore-based Pontiac G8, Holden Chairman and Managing Director Denny Mooney conceded there is export potential for the VE Ute (due for release in Australia in September) but played down exports to the U.S. specifically. But he did point out that Holden has had a left-hand-drive ute in Detroit, a left-hand-drive version of the HSV Maloo, under evaluation since last year.

Holden is officially saying nothing about the rumors and has denied that the VE Commodore Ute has been fast-tracked on the back of the prospect of U.S. exports. One unnamed Holden executive was reported recently in Australia as saying, "It was always meant to be September."

But clearly, a new small utility vehicle would be of great benefit to GM in the U.S., with the traditional large-pickup market cooling considerably because of rising fuel prices. On the Australian side, a U.S. export contract would provide Holden with the additional volume needed to maximize production efficiencies in its Australian plants.

Another Holden rumor emerging Down Under is the potential for a medium-size, rear-wheel-drive Holden to become the next-generation Pontiac G6. At the 2004 Sydney Motor Show, Holden surprised showgoers by unveiling the TT36, a lurid magenta pink concept car, which set industry tongues wagging about a return of the much-loved Torana.

Chicago Auto Show: Larry Burns Interview

by Worldchanging Chicago local editor, Patrick Rollens

Article PhotoAs part of an effort to reach out to new media, General Motors invited the Worldchanging Chicago team to attend the Chicago Auto Show as their special guests last week. We saw it as an important opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue with GM about crucial issues: global market demand, sustainability and alternative energy, to name a few. Worldchanging writers Jacob Wheeler, Megan Milliken and Antonio Garcia all plan to offer their unique perspectives on the Chicago Auto Show, and we wanted to begin our feature package with this interview with Larry Burns, GM's vice president of research & development and planning.

At GM, Burns is tasked with taking the long view: envisioning and strategizing for an automobile market that's often decades away. He was the driving force behind the Chevrolet Volt, an electric plug-in concept car showcased at the auto show, and he holds advanced degrees in public policy, mechanical engineering and transportation systems.

Worldchanging: Last night I was speaking with John [Larson] from Pontiac about how GM is more than willing to respond to what the market wants. They’re willing to give people what they want, whether that's hybrids or electric cars. How, in that case, could you lead the market versus responding to the market?

Larry Burns: Let me give you just a little bit of background because I think it’s relevant to my answer, and I think it’s relevant to what you’re trying to do. Today there’s over 6 billion people in world, and there’s 850 million cars and trucks, so that means only 12 percent of the world’s population own a car or truck. When you look at automobiles in emerging markets – China, India, Brazil, Russia, you name it – there seems to be this universal aspiration on the part of people for the freedom that they get from having personal transportation.

So if you think we’ve got issues on sustainability today with just 12 percent of the world’s population owning a car, given the emergence of those markets and the speed at which they’re growing, we’re going to have it much more severely unless we can come up with solutions. Ninety-eight percent of the energy used to automobile transportation comes from petroleum, and what we have to do is find ways to diversify that energy. That’s not a good business position to be in. So my answer to you is very much a business-driven answer, because we want to grow our business, but we have to grow it sustainably. Because the issues of energy or environment or safety or congestion could cap the growth of the auto industry, we believe technology truly can step up to this challenge. Look at the iPod phenomenon, for example.

Worldchanging: That’s a good one.

Larry Burns: Here’s someone that led the market and absolutely disrupted conventional entertainment systems. Take a home entertainment system, for example: speakers in each room and an amplifier. That’s pretty expensive stuff, and now you can just buy an iPod and a little iPod speaker system and put one in each room and you’re off and running. They led the market. We tend to think about this in terms of the strategy of “do unto to yourself before others do unto you.”

The only way you can really do that is to get out in front – but you’ve got to get out in front with a high-volume solution. With 850 million cars and trucks in the world today, going on 1.1 billion by the year 2020, if you park those cars end to end and wrap that traffic line around the planet, it would go around 125 times, to give you a visual sense of that. So we need to get to a high-volume solution. Something that’s nice technology but too costly for the masses isn’t going to solve this problem. So getting out in front of the market has to be getting out in front of the market with affordable technology. That really sells it. That’s why we’re so interested in hydrogen fuel cells and why we’re so interested in the E-flex concept and the potential of advanced batteries. It lets us diversify the energy for our product, because hydrogen can be made from so many different pathways, like renewable and biological sources, so everything we’re doing to get ethanol infrastructure in the US, put a couple more steps in the refining process and you’ve got hydrogen. It’s a very simple vehicle, that’s why it promises to be affordable. It has 1/10th as many moving parts in the propulsion system as an internal combustion engine.

Worldchanging: I saw that in the Volt upstairs.

Larry Burns: When you look at that, [simple] usually means lower cost, lower costs means more people can afford it. The electric drive is very exciting; it gives you your torque. You get your highest torque at 1 RPM. Things that excite people about cars are what they look like, their driving performance, their affordability and their safety, and very importantly now their environmental and energy efficiency aspects. So yeah: we’ve got to get out in front. We have to get out in front with technology solutions that are meaningful in terms of the ability to get the high-volume solutions to really fix these problems. We didn’t just do the Volt concept, we didn’t just think of E-flex, we’re also doing the production engineering on E-flex.

Worldchanging: Is the Volt a stepping stone to something that will be high-volume and affordable?

Absolutely, and here’s why. The electric motor that’s in [the Volt] is the same one that’s one our fuel cell vehicles. The controls and power electronics are the same. The physical package, the metal parts that make the chassis and the body will all be taken from a very high volume GM platform that we sell all over the world to one of the largest segments in the world. I’m not at liberty to tell you exactly what that is right now, but because that’s being sold in the millions worldwide, we’ve got the scale economy in all these parts, and we’ve engineered it so that battery and that electric drive and that engine generator can fit into that, and we’ve also engineered it so the fuel cell and the hydrogen storage can fit into it. So you can put both of these technology paths in the same physical set of parts. And depending on where you are in the world, you can get the scale economy going.

Worldchanging: Yeah, of course.

Larry Burns: In the Volt, those liquid fuel tanks can have biodiesel or ethanol in them. So now you really get the green, and that’s the real key. And so yeah, we started production engineering on it, so I think that tells you how serious we are about getting on with this. Now: is the battery ready? Not yet. Does the battery cell have chemistry that looks encouraging? Absolutely. But you’ve got to work from that individual cell to an entire battery pack in the automobile and finish that engineering work. And we’re working with a lot of suppliers to get that to work. Governments can’t subsidize high volumes sales; they just don’t have the money. And business can’t do it or they’ll go out of business. So the only way you’re going to really solve these problems is to use technology to find an answer that people love they can afford to buy. And they’re buying it for reasons beyond just environmental reasons.

Worldchanging: What about increasing awareness like putting a miles-per-gallon gauge in every GM vehicle? I can’t imagine it would cost a whole lot more to do that.

Larry Burns: You raise a real important point there. If you need to do something right now – which I believe we do – there’s enormous opportunity in how people are driving, to make their vehicle much more efficient. Let me give you an example. We took a sample of exactly the same vehicle and then took about a hundred drivers – they happened to be GM employees – driving exactly the same vehicle: same engine, same everything. And then we measured their actual fuel economy. And in this particular vehicle is ranged from like 11 to 26 miles per gallon.

Worldchanging: What a spread!

Larry Burns: How can that be? The speed at which people travel, the roads that they’re traveling on, the load that they’re carrying, the heaviness of their feet, the stopping and starting and how aggressively they drive – all of those variables enter in to the actual efficiency of a vehicle in actual use. Are there things we can do to improve the efficiency of all of those 230 million cars and trucks in the US right now, today? Definitely. Maintain your tire pressure, drive the speed limit, improve the traffic flow – and we can do some of that with our OnStar technology. I think there’s enormous opportunity to have immediate impact on existing car performance. If you were going to do something on your blog [like] 10 recommendations to tease another mile per gallon out of your car in terms of how you drive it, I think that would be very helpful.

Worldchanging: You touched a little bit on hydrogen. It seems like on a federal level, as far as funding, a lot of money is going toward ethanol right now. That seems to be the buzzword, the cash cow. How has it been trying to develop hydrogen as an alternative fuel?

Larry Burns: We’re pretty encouraged by the budget support for hydrogen. President Bush has pledged $1.2 billion, and it looks like the ’07 budget is going to deliver the remaining part of that commitment. The reason I know that is because I’m part of USCAR, which is a consortium between the US auto companies and the government, and we try to do collaborative work together, so I look at that funding pretty carefully. So the hydrogen hasn’t been cut back at all after we’ve gone after ethanol, nor has the battery work, as we’ve gone after better batteries, impacted the hydrogen.

The ethanol is less an invention issue. People know how to make ethanol, they know how to grow crops; it’s an economics issue to get the stations out there. And part of the risk is if suddenly petroleum dropped to twenty bucks a barrel, and all those people who have invested their capital in ethanol plants could be left holding the bag. So we’ve got to get an energy policy that allows the alternative fuels to play on a level playing field long enough so that they can get past the tipping point and let actual market dynamics sustain them. For us, it’s a relatively small added cost to make a vehicle E-85 compatible. Compared to a hybrid, it’s just a drop in the bucket, so we’ve commited to doubling our E-85 production, along with Ford and Chrysler, and we’ll even go further than that if we see evidence that the infrastructure is evolving more quickly.

One thought I really want to reinforce: if you really want to make a difference you need to get to high volume. That’s the only way you can shift this situation. And you’re starting out with over 800 million cars and trucks in the world that all have internal combustion engines and all rely on petroleum, so the expectation on how quickly you can shift that whole thing over…that’s just a reality we have to deal with.

If we can get an affordable vehicle that could be a market dynamic for an alternative fuel, venture capitalists are going to go after it. They’re spending a lot of money on ethanol right now because they think there’s going to be money to be made. They’re not doing it out of the goodness of their heart; they’re doing it because they know how to make money. That’s what got us excited about ethanol. When you see those kinds of people put their money in investment in infrastructure, they must believe a tipping point is around the corner.

Subaru today announced that the 2007 Subaru Legacy and Outback earned the highest rating in the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests. The Subaru Legacy and Outback received five stars in both the frontal and side-impact crash tests for all seating positions.

"Subaru customers have come to expect the highest level of safety in their vehicles," said
Thomas J. Doll, Executive Vice President, Subaru of America, Inc. "Both the Legacy and Outback continue to deliver the highest levels of active and passive safety as evidenced by their recent five star performances in the NHTSA NCAP tests."

NHTSA uses a consumer-friendly ratings system -- ranging from one to five stars, with five being the highest, that makes it easy to compare the predicted safety performance of tested vehicles. Beginning in September 2007, government star ratings will be listed on the window stickers of new vehicles. A complete listing of the NHTSA NCAP ratings for 2007 models can be found at http://www.safercar.gov/.

Subaru Making Safety Standard

To Subaru, safety means far more than protecting a car's occupants in the event of a collision. Ideally, a passenger vehicle should provide the driver with the means to help avoid hazardous situations. Subaru calls this concept Active Driving/Active Safety. Designing a vehicle for active safety gives a driver a strong sense of control, maneuverability and security.

Active Safety: Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive forms the core of the Subaru Active Driving/Active Safety concept. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gives a Subaru a significant traction advantage over two-wheel drive cars (front- and/or rear-wheel drive) on all road surfaces. On all 2007 Subaru models, the standard 4-channel / 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). This system enhances braking performance and stability by actively optimizing braking force between the front and rear wheels according to how the vehicle is loaded with passengers and cargo.

Passive Safety: The compact Subaru Boxer engine helps enhance safety, because it allows more crush room in front and on the sides. Subaru vehicles are designed to allow the entire powertrain to slide under the car along the floor tunnel in a severe collision, helping to prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment. All Subaru models are built around a Ring Frame Reinforced body structure design that incorporates front and rear crumple-zone construction to absorb the energy of an impact and help protect the reinforced passenger compartment. Essentially, the Ring Frame Reinforced structure forms a series of "rings" around the passenger compartment, providing excellent protection in a variety of collision types. This structure increases cabin rigidity and can absorb impact energy from any direction.

Advanced Restraint Systems: All 2007 Subaru models incorporate electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters in the front three-point seatbelts. These systems work together to gradually restrain the occupants and absorb the impact energy of a frontal collision. The seatbelt pre-tensioners operate simultaneously with the front air bags and cinch the front seatbelts to help restrain the driver and front passenger in their seats. Next, the mechanically operated torsion-bar force-limiters extend the belts to reduce the belt forces on the occupants' torsos. The seatbelt mechanism also absorbs energy through internal deformation.

All 2007 Subaru models feature the Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag System. This intelligent air bag system employs dual-stage-deployment driver and front passenger air bags.* A Seat position sensor on the driver's Seat track detects if the driver is sitting too close to the air bag, in which case the system would delay deployment of the air bag's second stage. The passenger side front Seat incorporates an occupant detection module that detects weight on the passenger Seat -- determining if it's a child or adult -- to control air bag deployment.

All Forester and Impreza models for 2007 feature standard front Seat head/chest side impact air bags. The Legacy and Outback models come equipped with front Seat side impact air bags for thorax-area protection and side curtain air bags (full side coverage) for head protection. The B9 Tribeca is equipped with front Seat side impact air bags for thorax-area protection and side curtain air bags for the front and middle rows. Mounted in the upper sides of the front seatbacks, the front Seat side-impact airbags offer protection regardless of Seat position. The side curtain air bags deploy from the headliner.

All 2007 Subaru models are equipped with the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) for securing specially equipped child seats in the rear seat. Subaru sedan models are equipped with an internal emergency trunk release with a self-illuminating handle.

First Drive: Peugeot 207 CC

When it comes to folding metal roof convertibles, the 207 CC is a winner

Peugeot 207CC

Turbo performance and stowage impress. Dash screen shows roof operation.
It's the car that brought the folding metal roof to the people, kick-starting a trend for affordable drop-tops boasting Mercedes SL-style technology for a quarter of the price.

Looking back, it seems obvious the 206 CC was destined to be a hit. But even Peugeot was surprised by its success. The French firm expected only niche sales, not for it to become the UK's most popular convertible.

So can its replacement, the 207 CC, perform the same trick in a market that is now far more competitive? The arrival of the all-new car hasn't come a moment too soon. Based on the same platform as the 207 hatchback, it sets out to answer the criticisms of its predecessor, with more emphasis on quality. Peugeot predicts even higher sales as a result, but with rivals such as Mitsubishi's Colt CC, Nissan's Micra C+C and Vauxhall's Tigra, competition is fierce.

Изображение “http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_426/car_photo_213101_5.jpg” не может быть показано, так как содержит ошибки.

Emphasising its importance to the Peugeot range, the 207 CC now features a roof which is designed and built in-house. It's totally automatic - there's no need to release any catches - and raises or lowers in 25 seconds, something you can do at speeds of up to 6mph.

The looks have grown up, too. Gone is the fussiness of the 206 CC, with its awkward bootlid slats, and in comes a chunkier, sportier design with a rakish windscreen, chiselled flanks and an athletic look, helped by a neatly clipped tail. Inside, there is plenty of space for those in the front, and a better driving position thanks to a lowered seat and reach/rake adjustable steering wheel. Qual-ity and design have also improved with a soft-feel facia which can be clad in optional leather.

As for luggage room, the rear seats are best used for squashy bags, but the boot is spacious at 449 litres (roof up) and 187 litres (roof down). That makes it arguably more practical than BMW's new 3-Series cabrio.

It's not as well built, though, and some hangovers from the 206 CC remain. The steering column still ro-tates against your foot, the five-speed gearbox feels imprecise and although rigidity has been greatly improved, there's some shake through the windscreen over bumps.

What's more, the roof on our test car failed to close twice when it was parked on a slope. Strengthening of the chassis has also seen the 207 CC put on around 200kg, which has implications for the performance. Of the three 1.6-litre engines available - 120bhp petrol (expected to be the best-seller), 150bhp petrol turbo and 110bhp turbodiesel - we could only test the latter two.

And we'd advise against the oil-burner, which feels strained despite its 240Nm of torque. It's also noisy (roof down) and nose-heavy, with vague steering. The 150bhp petrol is far livelier (0-62mph in 8.6 seconds), more refined and offering purer steering and snappier direction changes.

Both cars ride well, though, and with the hood up, they're quiet and comfortable places to spend time. The kit count is high, too, with base Sport-trimmed models coming with the electric roof, air-con and 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. The GT adds climate control, white dash dials and an MP3-compatible CD stereo.

Prices have risen by around £650 model-for-model, though, and our range-topping test car weighed in at a hefty £17,095. Is the 207 CC still the class leader? Well, it's not perfect, but quality is much improved and it looks great. And for those reasons alone, there's no more desirable CC model on the market.

First opinion:

When it comes to folding metal roof convertibles, Peugeot has a huge following in the UK. And there's no doubt the 207 CC is another winner. It's prettier than its predecessor, has an even more usable hood and a higher quality interior, plus it's surprisingly practical, too. However, some of the build issues that plagued the 206 CC remain, and we're not very impressed by the diesel or the price rises. Even so, it's still destined to go straight to the top of the sales charts.

GREY GOOSE Vodka Creates Customized Rolls-Royce

Phantoms to Help Promote Social Responsibility Message

2007 Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantom

GREY GOOSE(R) "The World's Best Tasting Vodka," has teamed up with Rolls-Royce, the undisputed leader in the ultra-luxury sedan segment, to create two customized limited-edition Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantoms to serve as a platform to promote their social responsibility message of enjoying a safe night on the town, while delivering a luxury experience that cannot be replicated. The public should look for the 2007 GREY GOOSE Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantom at high-profile events and around the town, where trained chauffeurs will educate passengers on GREY GOOSE and the importance to "Sip Responsibly." Additionally, vehicles will be utilized to raise money for local and national charity partners and ultimately auctioned off at the end of the program for charity.

Embodying the best in luxury and exclusivity, the 2007 GREY GOOSE Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantoms creates an environment representative of the GREY GOOSE brand. Passengers will be encapsulated within the GREY GOOSE experience through special features including custom blended GREY GOOSE signature blue exterior paint and plush upholstery, GREY GOOSE logo embroidered onto headrests and integrated into the trim of the car, grey chrome door tread plates, GREY GOOSE etched mirrors and sterling silver GREY GOOSE onlay on each of the mahogany-veneered door cappings. The new longer wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom is entirely hand-crafted in-house -- designed, engineered and hand-built by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood, England.

The Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantom is a limited edition vehicle with only 100 being produced in the world, which promises additional interior space for the rear passengers while maintaining the elegant look of the standard Rolls-Royce Phantom, its first-class driving performance and the comfort of front-seat occupants. Power continues to be provided by the same highly acclaimed 6.75-litre, 48-valve, 453 bhp, 720 Nm V12 engine that was developed for the standard Phantom. Because the weight gain of the new extended wheel base Phantom over the standard motor car is negligible, there is very little impact on performance or fuel economy. Driver and passengers can still enjoy the effortless and relentless urge of the engine from tick-over, riding on a wave of seemingly bottomless torque. At just 1000 rpm the Rolls-Royce V12 develops 560 Nm of torque.

About Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

For nearly 100 years, Rolls-Royce has been the icon of motor engineering and design. The name has entered the language as the expression of the perfection in a range of endeavors far beyond the motor industry. The new Rolls-Royce Phantom is entirely in keeping with that long and illustrious heritage yet, at the same time, is totally contemporary. It reflects the timeless values of quality, distinction and authority, combining the best of the past with the best modern design, engineering and technology to re-interpret the character of Rolls-Royce in the 21st century.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Gets Facelift

Latest generation of the classic cross-country vehicle now with an even classier specification

Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Facelift for Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Latest generation of the classic cross-country vehicle now with an even classier specification

Mercedes-Benz has refined its G-Class yet again. The interior has been injected with fresh appeal courtesy of a new, high-grade instrument cluster, an attractively styled steering wheel which is also new, as well as a modified centre console with redesigned switches plus a new-look control unit for the air conditioning. Outside, the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class can be identified by the design of its tail light units with their sophisticated LED look. These facelift measures see Mercedes-Benz hold true to its philosophy of making sure that this classic vehicle - which has been in production for over quarter of a century now - is equipped with a comfortable, up-to-date interior on a par with the best saloons, along with state-of-the-art technology. By so doing, it preserves the exclusive status of the G-Class as a full-blooded cross-country vehicle blended with the very finest lifestyle qualities.

The first Mercedes-Benz G-Class unveiled in 1979 was designed predominantly with tough off-road terrain in mind. Over the many years of its production, Mercedes engineers have adapted the G-Class to changing customer requirements. It boasted outstanding off-road capabilities right from the outset, but its all-terrain prowess has been continuously improved on by the addition of the latest electronics. Its exceptional performance off the beaten track, excellent towing abilities and balanced handling characteristics combined with its saloon-like ambience have resulted in the G-Class enjoying an extraordinarily long production career, which now extends to 28 years.

With its most recent facelift, Mercedes-Benz has added further touches of class to its cross-country classic. This is particularly true inside the Mercedes-Benz G-Class where a new instrument cluster gives the interior a sophisticated look. Four circular analogue dials with chrome-ring surrounds form the nerve centre for driver information. Also sporting a new design is the elegant four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, whose illuminated buttons drivers can simply press with their thumbs to call up various data or control certain functions without being distracted from the road. The G 320 CDI comes with a leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard, whilst the luxurious wood/leather version awaits G 500 and G 55 AMG drivers.

Common to all three Mercedes-Benz G-Class models is the modified centre console with its new controls and switches for the air conditioning and convenience functions. Not only does the new centre console give the cockpit added visual appeal, it is designed to make operating the controls more foolproof. The standard specification for the G 500 and G 55 AMG models includes the COMAND APS control and display unit featuring DVD navigation system, built-in radio, CD player and telephone keypad. A compass function has also been integrated to allow drivers to easily get their bearings even when they have left the signposted routes far behind them. The compass can be set to show the current heading in either the new instrument cluster's display or on the COMAND screen.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Facelift for Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Latest generation of the classic cross-country vehicle now with an even classier specification

The COMAND APS system can also be specified as an option for the G 320 CDI. This model is fitted as standard with the Audio 20 radio featuring CD player and telephone keypad instead of the previous Audio 10 unit. The entry-level model now also comes with heated front seats at no extra cost. The new 12V power socket in the front-passenger footwell of all models in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class range allows for straightforward connection of auxiliary electrical appliances.

From outside, the newest generation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class can be recognised from its tail lights, which have been remodelled by the designers to give them a fresh, new, LED-style look.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Facelift for Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Latest generation of the classic cross-country vehicle now with an even classier specification

New attractive optional extras available

To coincide with the facelift, Mercedes-Benz has added some new enticing items to its list of optional extras for the G-Class.

These include the following highlights:

* a reversing camera which shows drivers the scene behind the vehicle on the new COMAND unit's 6.5-inch screen;
* a tyre pressure monitoring system whose information appears in the instrument cluster display;
* a sports exhaust system for the long-wheelbase G 500 Station Wagon model which is basically identical to the exhaust system fitted in the G 55 AMG;
* the "ARTICO" interior package with robust man-made leather appointments, plus
* the new "Cognac" leather upholstery which extends the previous choice of leather appointments in either black or grey by adding a third, brown tone (no-cost option for G 500 model)

In light of these facelift measures, the claim that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is now more comfortable and innovative than ever has never rung so true. For not only does the G-Class excel by virtue of a luxurious interior ambience, its technology is absolutely state of the art too. The permanent all-wheel drive is complemented by the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS which boosts vehicle grip when pulling away and accelerating on slippery surfaces. What's more, the G Class comes equipped with three engageable differential locks as well as a low-range ratio for tackling tough terrain.

The current Mercedes-Benz G-Class model line-up comprises three engines and three different body variants. The engine power spectrum ranges from the 165 kW/224 hp of the G 320 CDI to the 368 kW/500 hp developed by the G 55 AMG.

The new-look Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available to order now, with deliveries starting in mid April.

Bertone To Roll Out Fiat Panda-Based Concept Car

GENEVA, Switzerland — While releasing few details, Italian design house Bertone on Thursday said it will unveil a new two-seater concept car based on the Fiat Panda 100 HP at the upcoming Geneva auto show.

bertone conceptThe new Bertone concept features an aluminum body, clear door panels and bucket seats. It is expected to use a 1.4-liter 16-valve engine that delivers 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 96 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. It can sprint from zero to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds.

The concept "harks back explicitly to the Fiat 500 barchetta designed by a young Nuccio Bertone in 1947 as a one-off for his own personal use in races," the company said in a statement. It is intended to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Bertone, which was founded in 1912 when Giovanni Bertone opened a workshop for the repair of horse-drawn carriages.

The concept is based on the new Fiat Panda 100 HP, which made its world debut at the Paris auto show last fall.

The Bertone/Fiat link on the concept is described as "natural and emotional." The companies have collaborated on more than 50 vehicles, from the 850 Spider to the Punto Cabrio.

Kia Cee'd "Sporty Wagon" for Europe

SEOUL, Korea — Kia has released photographs of the production version of its new Cee'd wagon prior to its unveiling at next month's Geneva auto show.

Kia Ceed Sporty WagonThe new car, which will be sold under the name Sporty Wagon in Europe, forms part of a three-model Cee'd lineup. It slots in alongside the current five-door Cee'd and the three-door version that is planned to be unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Kia claims the Cee'd Sporty Wagon brings class-leading interior accommodation and luggage space to its class. At 176 inches in length, it is 29.3 inches longer than the five-door hatchback version of the Cee'd, all of which is concentrated in the rear overhang. It is also almost a half-inch taller than its hatchback sibling at 58.7 inches.

The Korean carmaker is making much of its new wagon's rear tailgate mechanism. It is hinged 8.9 inches inward from the top of the rear window, an arrangement it says allows you to load the rear luggage compartment without needing to step back from the car when the tailgate is raised.
The engine lineup mirrors that of the Cee'd five-door, with the choice of 105-horsepower 1.4-liter and 122-hp 1.6-liter gasoline units along with three common-rail diesels: a 1.6-liter with either 90 hp or 115 hp, and an upcoming 2.0-liter with 140 hp.

Peugeot-sponsored P.L.E.A.S.E design competition

It's one of the most tenuous acronyms we've ever come across, but at least the end result is worth the creaky abbreviation.

Peugeot P.L.E.A.S.E designThe Peugeot-sponsored P.L.E.A.S.E design competition takes it name from the firm's desire to find a car that provides driving 'Pleasure through its Lightness and its Efficiency while remaining Accessible through its Simplicity and Environmentally friendly design'.

We told you it was tenuous.

The winner of this strangely titled contest is the Flux, created by 20-year-old Romanian student Mihai Panaitescu.

Mihai is the youngest ever winner of the competition and his Flux sports car uses a fuel cell in place of a petrol engine.

We hope the contest leads to a job for young Mihai, where he could help Peugeot streamline its acronyms.<,/span>

America Vs. Germany In The U.K. - Chrysler 300C SRT-8 Vs. BMW M5

Yes, we love the UK’s Top Gear, despite their derisive (and incessant) “Yank Tank” jokes. In this clip, we see Jeremy Clarkson take on one of our favorite big American sedans, the Chrysler 300C SRT-8. The boys at TG have a little sideways fun with the car, and then put it up against BMW’s all-conquering M5 at Willow Springs.

Our end assessment of the SRT-8 differs rather sharply with that of Mr. Clarkson, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy seeing it drifting about in tire-smoking anger.

Enjoy.

Nissan To Stage Global Reveal For Next-Generation X-Trail In Geneva

nissan-x-trail-red-3-4.jpg

Nissan will be staging a world premier unveiling for its next generation X-Trail crossover SUV at the coming Geneva Auto Show which is but a few weeks away.

Unlike many such press unveilings of late, there’s no calculated drip-drip of advance media information or teaser sketches, so the first time anyone outside Nissan gets to see the new X-Trail will be at the show itself. And that’s good–we like surprises.

So, what can we tell you? This second generation X-Trail will be spun off the same C-platform family that underpins Nissan’s new small Rogue SUV, and will be targeted mainly at Europe and Japan to fight the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. From what we hear, the trucklet won’t be coming to the U.S. because Nissan will soon have the Rogue and Murano covering where the X-Trail might conceivably go. (We’re not yet sure where that leaves Canada, which presently markets both the current X-trail and Murano).

Expect, then…

...another car-based, urbanized SUV with front-drive/selectable all-wheel drive, plus a new-tech 2.0-liter gas four cylinder (MR20DE is a hot tip). A bigger gas 2.5-liter may also be added. An oil burning 2.2 TDi will also be inthe cards for Europe.

The current X-Trail (shown), now seven years old, has been a steady and successful seller, so Nissan’s been in no urgent rush to replace it. The most interesting version has always been the 2.0-liter turbo for Japan, which pumped out a not inconsiderable 276 bhp, which sounded insane but in actual fact, wasn’t.

Look Mom, No Gas: 100% BioEthanol Saab Concept

Biopower100

Today, GM announced its first BioEthanol concept, the Saab BioPower 100. It’s a Saab 9-5 SportCombi wagon that features a 2.0-liter turbo engine that runs on E100 — 100% ethanol. Currently, many manufacturers produce flex-fuel vehicles that run on E85, a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% regular gasoline. This concept gets rid of even that small percent of gas.

All that ethanol means the octane level is incredibly high. The small turbo engine produces a whopping 300 hp and 295 pounds-feet of torque and hustles to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds. The idea of running a car on ethanol has always appealed to us because of the possible performance aspect. Currently, the infrastructure isn’t in place to support a massive switch to ethanol-powered vehicles, and the cost per gallon of E85 is still quite high. Add that to the lower fuel economy the E100 would get, and we better see a lot more sorghum farms and ethanol refineries popping up to make it affordable. It seems car companies can build nice performance cars that run on alternative fuels; now alternative fuel production needs to catch up.

The new smart fortwo: more power and more driving fun

State-of-the-art compact three-cylinder engines are installed at the rear of the new Smart fortwo. The all-aluminium engines were developed in cooperation with Mitsubishi, and are produced in Japan. They have been optimised for use in the new Smart fortwo.

Naturally aspirated petrol engines rated at 45 kW (61 bhp) or 52 kW (71 bhp) are available, as is a turbo engine delivering 62 kW (84 bhp). They all have capacity of 1.0 litres. In addition to the increase in power, the maximum speed has also been increased – to 145 km/h (electronically limited).

The engine is mounted transversally in front of the rear axle, and is slanted at an angle of 45
degrees towards the rear. The cylinder barrels take the form of grey cast iron liners. Gas exchange is controlled by four valves per combustion chamber. The valves are controlled by separate intake and exhaust camshafts, via bucket tappets. The camshafts are driven via a maintenance-free timing chain.

The engine reacts spontaneously to accelerator pedal movement even at low revs and demonstrates how effectively the three-cylinder engine's variable valve control works. The intake camshafts are twisted electrohydraulically against the exhaust camshafts, providing for better filling of the combustion chambers at low revs. This gives the Smart noticeably greater agility, especially in city traffic.

The 52 kW (71 bhp) version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds, giving it a head start against some other cars at the traffic lights. And that's no surprise – after all, a Smart fortwo weighs in at just 750 kilograms. The 62 kW (84 bhp) turbo version is even more dynamic sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds.

The three-cylinder engine develops its typical beefy sound without being rough or loud. Because the masses being moved are low, there is no need for a balancer shaft – which would reduce the output of the engine. The turbo version has a torsional vibration damper on the crankshaft.

To ensure a long service life, the turbocharger is fitted with a water cooling system, while the charge air cooler is based on air/air technology and is located behind the transmission. The maximum charge pressure is 0.5 bar, with control taking place via a wastegate valve in the turbocharger. The naturally aspirated engine's compression ratio is 11.5:1, while in the turbo engine it is 10:1.

smart fortwo cdi: there's no more economical way of running a car

The modifications to the diesel engine have led to a ten percent power increase, which means that the engine now delivers 33 kW (45 bhp), but also consumes less than before. The new Smart fortwo cdi achieves the coveted "three-litre car" status.

The Smart fortwo cdi emits just 90 grams of CO2 per kilometre, corresponding to standard consumption of just 3.4 litres. At present there is no more economical car than the Smart fortwo cdi.

New transmission improves shifting comfort, consumption and agility

In future, Smart fortwo drivers will benefit from a newly-developed transmission that will take no time to get used to. Instead of the previous six gears, the transmission produced by the specialist Getrag now has five gears, and offers considerable advantages in terms of comfort, fuel consumption and agility.

In the new Smart fortwo there is once again no clutch pedal, as this task is performed by an electric motor. If the shift lever on the centre console is briefly tapped forwards, the transmission will shift up a gear, and if it is drawn back, down a gear. Alternatively, the gears can be changed by means of paddles on the steering wheel (standard for pulse).

To the right of the manual level, marked with a plus and minus sign, is the neutral position, N. Reverse gear is engaged by pulling the shift lever backwards from this position.

The Smart fortwo passion comes with the automatic gear programme (softouch) as standard (optional for pure and pulse). It can be recognised by a small button on the shift lever.

When this is pressed down, the transmission switches over from manual gear shifting (softip) to the automatic gear programme. It’s the ideal solution for use in stop-and-go traffic. As soon as the driver moves the shift lever manually, the system returns to manual gear-changing mode.

The developers have also greatly improved the shift delays. Shift delays have been reduced by more than half compared to the previous model. This is particularly beneficial when the driver wants to shift down two gears at once. This, coupled with the considerably increased torque, makes for even greater ride comfort. To improve ride comfort even more, the transmission has a kickdown function.

This allows the driver to use the accelerator pedal to shift down two gears at once, in both manual and automatic mode. Incorrect gear changing and overrevving are impossible, because the electronics will only accept logical gear changes.

Driving dynamics

Thanks to extensive changes to its suspension, and its new geometry, the smart’s handling has been significantly improved. It is now considerably more agile and responsive than its predecessor. However, despite the car’s more sporty design, no compromises are made on comfort, and longer journeys present no problem at all for the new Smart fortwo.

The wheelbase has increased by 55, the front track widths by seven, and the rear track widths by 31 millimetres. This reduces pitching and rolling movements. The anti-roll bar at the front is now directly hinged to the McPherson strut instead of the wishbone for better responsiveness.

The diameter of the anti-roll bar is 18.5 millimetres, and it very effectively prevents the vehicle body from rolling in bends. Tyres measuring 155/60 R 15 at the front are fitted at the factory on 4.5 inch steel rims. The passion boasts alloy wheels in the same size. The pulse equipment line comes with alloy wheels measuring 175/55 R 15.

The tried-and-tested DeDion construction has been kept at the rear. The position of the central mount has been changed (moved higher), which has had a positive effect on the manoeuvrability of the fortwo. The springs are now further out than in the previous model, thereby supporting the vehicle body even more effectively against rolling. The size of the tyres on the rear axle in the basic version is 175/55 R 15 on 5.5-inch rims. For the pulse the dimensions are 195/50 R 15.

The steering greatly influences the agile driving feel: the transmission ratio is 22:1. This means that the steering is transmitted almost ten percent more directly than that of the predecessor. The turning circle is just 8.75 metres – a figure unmatched by any other small car. This makes manoeuvring extremely easy.

It allows turning in places where any other car would have to shunt to and fro. And it’s just 3.5 turns of the wheel from stop to stop. Electric power steering is available for the Smart fortwo at an extra charge.

The transmission ratio is just 21:1. It operates on a linear basis and gives the fortwo astonishingly agile handling. The electric boost power varies according to vehicle speed, steering angle and the amount of force applied to the steering wheel.

All these measures mean that the Smart is now even sprightlier than before. It is noticeably agiler, sportier – and at the same time more comfortable.

esp is a standard feature

The electronic stability programme esp with integrated abs and electronic brake-force distribution are included in the standard spec, as is a hydraulic brake booster. Whereas other manufacturers in the micro car segment only offer esp subject to an additional charge – if at all – esp is a standard feature in the Smart fortwo.

The fortwo is the only car in its class to come with brake assist. When it detects abrupt emergency braking, brake assist automatically provides full brake pressure in order to ensure optimum deceleration. It offers a helping hand in those situations where the driver has pressed the brake pedal quickly, but not firmly enough.

Because the electronically limited maximum speed of the petrol engines has been increased, the Smart fortwo’s brakes have grown as well. Disc brakes are fitted at the front, while drum brakes are fitted at the rear.

BMW M Sport Coupe

The M Sport Coupe and Convertible models join the 3-Series line-up with lower, stiffer suspension and 18in alloy wheels as standard, continuing a long line of Sport models in the 3-Series range.

bmw m3bmw 320i m sport coupebmw 320i m sport coupe 2There's the usual sports seats finished in Alcantara inside and plenty of 'M' logo badges dotted about the cabin to remind you of the extra cash you paid.

Prices start at £28,330 for the 320i M Sport Coupe and head all the way north to £40,250 for the 335i M Sport Convertible.

Another Sport model to join the BMW fray is the 130i M Sport Limited Edition, based on the new three-door bodyshell.

Finished in black paint with 'lemon leather' interior, it sounds delightful. At least there are some tasty 18in alloy wheels to admire.

There are also some unique interior touches for this 1-Series, including a monikered start/stop button. And to make it even more distinctive, just 160 of them will make it to the UK this spring with a price tag of £30,270.

While introducing these new models, it's also given BMW the chance to sneak in some price increases on the 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-Series ranges, as well as for the X3, X5 and Z4 models.

Toyota To Show Two Hybrid Concepts

TOKYO — Toyota said on Wednesday it plans to show a pair of hybrid concepts, the Hybrid X and the FT-HS, at the upcoming Geneva auto show.

toyota ft-hs concepttoyota ft-hs concept 2The Hybrid X will make its world premiere in Geneva in March. Toyota says the concept car "proposes a new design language for hybrid models while also acting as a technology showcase for future hybrid cars."

The FT-HS or Future Toyota Hybrid Sports, was originally shown at Detroit's auto show in January. It is described as a concept of "the sports car of the 21st century." The FT-HS is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with a "projected" 0-62-mph acceleration in the 4-second range. Toyota says the FT-HS "shows the potential of hybrid technology."

Chevrolet HHR Under Consideration for Europe

ZURICH, Switzerland — General Motors' European operation has announced it will show the Chevrolet HHR (Heritage High Roof) next month at the Geneva auto show in a bid to gauge European interest in the retro-styled hatchback/wagon.

Chevrolet HHROn sale in the United States since 2005, the HHR was initially ruled out for European sale due to the reorganization of the Chevrolet brand following GM's takeover of Korean carmaker Daewoo, which now supplies the majority of Chevrolet models in Europe.

However, high-ranking GM officials say there is now a very good likelihood of it being placed on sale in selected European markets. "We've already weighed the financial aspects of bringing the HHR to Europe. Now we want to see how the car-buying public reacts to the car," a source told Inside Line.

One drawback to the plan could be the HHR's lack of a diesel engine. Currently sold with a choice of two four-cylinder gasoline engines, a 146-horsepower 2.2-liter and a 174-hp 2.4-liter, its appeal would be limited in a market driven by sales of compact diesel-powered hatchbacks. Another obstacle is the lack of a right-hand-drive version for the U.K. market.

Storm Concept Design by Stefan Schulze

(from Stefan Schulze) The Storm was a big project, because I wanted to build up my first complete car (interior and engine) with a perfect modeling.

You can find tons of 3D car models in the net but most of them works only for small print or internet size. Better 3D mesh are often on original CAD files. My models work with 300 DPI prints, so the Storm can be print on a 10x5 meter Wallpaper.

The Storm use the Diablo frame for size, so if you have a Diablo frame it is a small step to use the Storm as an individual design.

Daimler Sell Chrysler?

STUTTGART, Germany — DaimlerChrysler boss Dieter Zetsche is studying a proposal to sell the Chrysler Group, as the company's financially embattled U.S. subsidiary unveiled the latest in a series of massive restructurings aimed at returning Chrysler to profitability by 2008.

ChryslerIn a company statement describing details of the Chrysler restructuring plan, Zetsche said: "We are looking into further strategic options with (other) partners....We do not exclude any option in order to find the best solution for both the Chrysler Group and DaimlerChrysler."

It is the first official indication that the parent company is considering a potential spin-off or sale of the U.S. automaker it acquired in a controversial 1998 "merger of equals."

As part of Chrysler's latest overhaul, the company will shed another 13,000 jobs and will shutter its truck plant in Newark, Delaware, in 2009. Chrysler said it is also reducing the number of vehicle platforms from 12 to seven by 2012, while investing $3 billion in new engines and transmissions.

In Germany, the newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources on DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board, reported that Zetsche has commissioned a U.S.-based investment bank to examine all possible options for Chrysler following news that the American company posted losses totaling nearly $1.5 billion in 2006.

"Everything is possible," a board source told Handelsblatt, adding, "It is more likely that something drastic will happen than that nothing will happen." Handelsblatt said Zetsche's options include a partial or complete sale of the company.

Among the possibilities open to Zetsche is the formation of an alliance with another carmaker. Recent speculation within European automotive and financial circles has linked Chrysler with Renault, though both sides deny talks have taken place.

A further alternative before Zetsche, according to Handelsblatt, is spinning off Chrysler and refloating it on the New York Stock Exchange.

In Detroit, Chrysler said key elements of its latest three-year "recovery and transformation plan" include reducing the company's longstanding focus on trucks, utility vehicles and minivans, and broadening its sales reach beyond North America.

As part of its product offensive, Chrysler said it will launch more than 20 new and 13 refreshed vehicles by 2009, including the redesigned Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, the Dodge Avenger and the Jeep Liberty. The company also plans to introduce a new B-segment compact imported from Chinese automaker Chery.

Chrysler's powertrain plan includes provisions to develop a new family of V6 engines under the internal name Phoenix, as well as a new dual-clutch transmission in partnership with Getrag.

Ford Offers Sneak Peek at New Mondeo

BRENTWOOD, England — Ford has released teaser images of its new Mondeo in advance of the car's world debut at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. The vehicle should be of major interest to U.S. buyers, even though the car initially will only go on sale in Europe this summer, since it is one of several vehicles under consideration by the Dearborn automaker for launch in America.

new ford mondeonew ford mondeo 2

new ford mondeo 3Just as Saturn has done with the Astra, sister car to the Opel Astra, Ford is taking a hard look at whether its European models, such as the Mondeo, would be appealing to American buyers who have shown a decided distaste for products like the Ford Five Hundred. The Five Hundred was recently renamed the Taurus in a bid to boost the vehicle's showroom traffic. The Mondeo is said to be one of several vehicles being studied for a U.S. launch at the behest of Ford's new president and CEO Alan Mulally.

The new Mondeo goes upscale, apparently adopting design cues from sister brand Jaguar. It will be offered in three variants: a sedan, a hatchback and a wagon. "It's probably the most elegant car we've ever launched, and it's certainly the most technologically advanced," said Roelant de Waard, Ford of Britain's chairman and managing director.

Ford says the new Mondeo is the most recent example of its "kinetic design" language. Exterior cues include striking taillights, a shoulder line that runs through the side of the car and chamfered corners. The cabin gets such luxury touches as piano black trim, soft-touch materials and ambient lighting.

The Mondeo will come in four trim levels in Europe, including the base Edge, the Zetec series, and the top-of-the-line Ghia and Titanium X models. Ford says the Ghia represents "classic luxury," with lots of chrome and wood in the cabin. The Titanium model has a more contemporary look, à la Audi.

High-tech features include vehicle dynamics control with hill launch assist and adaptive cruise control. The new Mondeo gets a wider track and a new rear suspension.

For Europe, the engine choices include a 1.8-liter 98-horsepower or 123-hp diesel with a five-speed manual transmission or a 2.0-liter 138-hp diesel with a six-speed manual transmission. Gas engines include a 108-hp or 123-hp 1.6-liter with a five-speed manual transmission and a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder that makes 159 hp. The new engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A range-topping 2.5-liter five-cylinder delivers 217 hp and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Mondeo is set for launch in Europe in June.

New MTM Audi S3New MTM Audi S3 2

Motoren Technik Mayer GmbH from Wettstetten, Germany, laid their hands on the new referee within the sport compact car arena. The Audi S3 creates great competition within its own corporation to Golf GTI and R32 as well the bavarian colleagues BMW with the mighty 130i. Through the mtm-provided components for motor, breaks, exhaust system and suspension, they have distanced themselves even more from their competitors raising the S3 to an uncompromising racer!

Better performance and higher torque

The TFSI-motor borrowed from parent company VW, is really ideal for tuning revisions. Directly off the assembly line, the turbo engine of Audi S3 already has an impressive 265 HP. One would imagine this alone is enough. Yet, just experiencing the difference proves a visit to mtm is really worth while. In its first stage, mtm replaces the motor electronics. This procedure alone upgrades power to 310 HP/228 kW as well as torque to 400 Nm (Series: 350 Nm). Whoever selects a mtm resonator and the mtm rear silencer receives an additional 5 HP and 5 Nm. The hottest version receives even more components from mtm to boot. With the mtm front silencer and a front pipe with metallic catalysatic converter, performance increases to a powerful 330 HP and torque of 420 Nm. With this addition, in just 5,1 seconds 0 to 100 km/h is reached and a maximum speed up to 264 km/h obtainable.
Naturally, mtm ensures durability for all its parts. Customers benefit from the extensive experience mtm has gathered for example from the TT bimoto®.

As can be expected, all parts described above for the exhaust system are available seperately for the Audi S3 2.0 TFSI. Either the rear silencer with exhaust flap control alone or together with the complete catalytic converter system. Both tail pipes, each with a diameter of 80 mm, look far more impressive than the series-produced parts. From each excapes a sound that one generally only experiences on the race track.

“Races are won on brakes”

Implimenting power upgrades alone, with complete disregard for adequate deceleration, would be operating completely irresponsibly. For this reason, mtm offers cars of all classes specifically designed brake systems.

In the case of the S3, mtm improves deceleration on the front axle in three upgrades. For the first upgrade, mtm provides the S3 with 8-piston-fixed calipers and 330x32 mm diameter sized semi-perforated brake discs. Even more impressive is the next higher upgrade of completely perforated brake discs with diameter dimension of 356x34mm. They must sustain pressure from 8-piston-brake calipers. Last mentioned, mtm also uses within the largest of the three brake systems. Here the semi-perforated brake discs measure 380x34 mm in diameter and when they are gripped by the calipers, the driver has the feeling of grabbing an anchor. The saying “races are won on brakes” is not to be taken lightly. The racetrack beckons! Every package contains both the steel flex brake lines as well as additional parts. The semi-perforated brake discs are, by the way, a custom-made product from mtm. A unique element for the these discs is the semi-perforations as they do not go through the disc completely. They show optics and characteristics of a completely perforated-through disc, but avoid the normally found crack formations followed by extended use.

Clearly, the standard equipped S3 is an outstanding vehicle. However, those who prefer no comprimises will choose from the mtm price-list a coilover suspension which provides lowering the S3 between 35 and 65mm. Its set-up can be regulated by adjustment of the compression and rebound of the damper. Alternatively, mtm offers shorter sport springs that lower the S3 by 45 mm. For better road holding ability, mtm furnishes spacers for track widening of 20 mm per axle.

In regards to wheels, mtm comes up with its own creation “bimoto”. These spectacular features come in finishes of “shiny silver”, “titanium” and “diamond cut”. mtm offers the “bimoto”-wheels for the S3 in the size 8,5x19” ET50. Additionally available is a wheel set with tyres in the dimensions 235/35ZR19.

The general rule at mtm is “special wishes will be granted”. Modifications can be made on an individual basis!

2007 Aston Martin Vanquish S 42007 Aston Martin Vanquish S 52007 Aston Martin Vanquish S 62007 Aston Martin Vanquish S 72007 Aston Martin Vanquish S 8With a maximum speed in excess of 200mph (320 km/h) and a 6.0 litre V12 engine developing 520 horsepower, the Vanquish S has been designed to deliver even greater performance, complemented by subtle suspension and steering changes and a number of interior and external style revisions.

The Vanquish S has received subtle but effective changes to complement its elegant muscular body. The famous Aston Martin grille has a new rounded and more open appearance for better cooling, and an aerodynamic splitter improves high-speed stability.

At the rear, a redesigned boot lid featuring a new high mounted stop lamp reduces lift and improves balance and stability, helping to achieve an impressive Cd figure of 0.32.

These differences on the Vanquish S not only improve the appearance but also enhance performance. All the exterior body panels are constructed from aluminium with each individual panel hand tailored to the central structure to ensure a perfect panel fit. Every carefully detailed feature provides graphic evidence of the painstaking craftsmanship and quality, which is invested in its construction at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell site in Buckinghamshire.

Revised steering geometry provides a 20% quicker response, allowing the driver to apply a reduced input for required steering response. This enables the driver to be more precise with inputs - especially on winding roads - and more accurate feedback from the chassis.

The Sports Dynamics suspension, steering and braking package is now standard on the Vanquish S. This includes stiffer springs and dampers and shorter steering arms.

The brakes have been upgraded to incorporate larger six piston calipers and larger grooved and ventilated front discs. The rear discs are 2mm wider for improved heat dissipation. The use of floating discs ensures the driver has consistent pedal feel under heavy braking whilst a new brake pedal assembly reduces travel and enhances pedal feel.

Further development of Aston Martin’s low emissions, all alloy, quad-overhead camshaft, 48 valve, 6.0-litre V12 engine has generated an increase in power from 460 bhp to 520 bhp and torque is boosted to 425 lb ft (577 Nm).

Engine enhancements include new cylinder heads with fully machined inlet ports and combustion chambers to improve airflow, revised engine mapping and new fuel injectors.

The overall interior design is a subtle blend of traditional, classic and modern materials with Bridge of Weir leather upholstery matched to contemporary metal interior fittings and finishes. A number of detailed improvements have been made to the interior of the Vanquish S to enhance the enhance the overall appeal.

“The Vanquish S V12 is a combination of state-of-the-art aerospace technology and hand craftsmanship,” said Dr Bez. “It is the flagship model of a confident and growing company that is proud to display its heritage but is also determined to make the most technologically modern and inspirational sports cars in the world.”

Illustrating Aston Martin’s continuing commitment to customer care Vanquish S customers will be eligible for a complimentary Performance Driving Course. This comprehensive one-to-one driving experience can be taken at one of three proving grounds – Millbrook in the UK, Lommel in Belgium, or Romeo, Michigan, in North America.

Since its introduction in 2001, the Vanquish has proved to be a success, pioneering the use of advanced technologies and materials such as aluminium and carbon fibre. Furthermore, its on screen appearance in the latest James Bond film ‘Die Another Day’ has ensured the Vanquish has become instantly recognisable to many.

With the capacity to continue to turn heads, the design of the Vanquish is already established as a modern classic. Perfectly proportioned from every aspect, Ian Callum’s design confirms the promise of outstanding “Supercar” performance and the impeccable pedigree of the Vanquish as the flagship model for Aston Martin.

First Drive: 2008 BRP Can-Am Spyder

Previews

A new type of vehicle promises motorcycle thrills without the pain.

The open-air experience of a motorcycle can be terrifically fun, but there’s an obvious problem: motorcycles fall over, resulting in definite injury to the ego and possibly to the body. BRP, the company that makes Ski-Doo snowmobiles, Can-Am ATVs, and Sea-Doo watercraft, thinks it has a solution: a three-wheeler called the Can-Am Spyder.

Three-wheelers are not new. The British company Morgan got its start almost 100 years ago with a trike that drivers sat in and drove more or less like a car. The Spyder pilot, however, straddles a motorcycle-like seat and turns the two front wheels with handlebars. By the way, the Department of Transportation considers the Spyder a motorcycle, and in all states except California, Delaware, and North Carolina, you’ll need a cycle license to ride it. In those other three, a car license will do.

The idea here is to bring the motorcycle experience to a vehicle that’s much easier to operate. Motorcycles can be tricky to learn, as the control layout is different, and you have to shift your weight and lean into corners. Sure, plenty of folks figure it out—about 700,000 street bikes are sold every year—but the learning curve can be a barrier to entry.

The Spyder has several features that make it easy to ride. Whereas motorcycles typically have a hand lever for the front brake and a foot pedal for the rear, the Spyder’s brakes are linked and actuated only by a right-foot pedal. And, very unusual for bikes, these are standard anti-lock brakes, and the Spyder also has a traction- and stability-control systems. Steering effort is light, thanks to electric assist, a vacuum booster lightens the clutch pull, and a reverse gear aids parking. If this sounds like “Motorcycling for Dummies,” you’re right. Although hard-core knee draggers may deride the Spyder as a cycle with training wheels, it’s not really meant for them. It is, however, undeniably fun to ride.

We didn’t get a chance to do an instrumented test, but from our brief ride, it was obvious that the Spyder has plenty of poke. A water-cooled 1.0-liter V-2 pumps out 106 horsepower, which the company claims should be enough to propel the roughly 750-pound trike to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Frankly, it felt quicker than that, with instant response available anywhere in its 9500-rpm range.

Driving Impressions and Availability

What struck us most, however, was how quickly we were piloting the Spyder with confidence. After the first few minutes of riding, we had already buried the throttle and turned hard enough to engage the nondefeatable stability-control system. Most of us wouldn’t attempt riding a two-wheeler that aggressively. Another useful thing is that it helps you lean into turns. That’s a good thing because, unlike in a car, the rider’s body position has a noticeable effect on the vehicle’s response and, in addition, leaning alleviates the uncomfortable sensation that a hard turn might eject the rider. We found that, despite the power steering, it takes a healthy push on the handlebar to turn the wheels. The suspension—aided by tires that are inflated to only 14 psi—easily soaked up bumps and potholes, however, and the brakes arrested forward momentum with striking authority.

In short, the Spyder is easy enough to pilot that riders can relax and enjoy that in-the-elements feeling that’s likely one of a motorcycle’s main attractions. If this sounds good to you, be prepared to pony up $14,999 when the Spyder goes on sale in September. For more information, go to www.can-am.brp.com.

Mazda’s Evergreen Roadster / Miata / MX-5 Clicks Off Number 800,000

800000-roadster-with-takeo.jpg

While the world was pre-occupied with the fun and razzmatazz of the Chicago Show last week, Mazda had a small celebration party to mark the production of the 800,000th Roadster (shown above with chief designer Takeo Kijima).

The brilliant, lightweight open two-seater that America knows better as the Miata or MX-5, reached the 800,000 unit mark in Japan on January 30, 2007.

Launched in the summer of 1989, Mazda’s sports car has defied the years, fashions and critics. With some Mazda insiders originally predicting the car would be a total failure, production reached the 500,000 unit mark on February 8, 1999, just over a year after the launch of the second generation.

miata_1stgen_f34.jpgmiata_2ndgen_f34.jpg

The little Mazda then entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s top selling, lightweight, open-top, two-seat sports car (beating, we suspect, the MGB) when production clicked over to unit number 531,890 in May 2000.

Roadster number 700,000 rolled off the line on March 5, 2004. The latest, Mk 3 shape model arrived in summer 2005. At the current rate, we reckon the 1 millionth should arrive sometime around 2011, if not before.

Japan Report: Nissan’s 350Z Super GT Championship Car Goes V-8

2007-nismo-fairlady-z-with.jpg

Nissan’s entering the 2007 Super GT race championship in Japan with this ferocious looking 350Z, a car which makes history by being the first works-backed 350Z to have V8 power.

Yes, folks, a V8 350Z, the stuff of dreams for many Zed fans, but the eight cylinder 4.5-liter engine is only for the track. We hear there are absolutely no plans for production, unfortunately.

The Super GT championship is massive in Japan, drawing huge crowds and making for spectacular 30-40 car racing. It’s the nearest thing Japan has to NASCAR and Toyota, Nissan and Honda field works-backed teams each with a strong determination to win.

The Nissan 350Z (known as the Fairlady Z in Japan) has always run a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 in Super GT’s top GT 500 class, with power restricted to around 500 bhp.

Nissan’s motor sport arm, NISMO, won the team championship three times between 2003-2005 going this V6 route. But in 2006, against the odds, it was a TOM’s entered Lexus SC430 that took the coveted team title.

The key to the Lexus’ unlikely victory was its big normally-aspirated V8 engine. The air restrictor rules are reputedly more lenient with atmo engines over turbos, hence Nissan’s switch to the Infiniti-derived 4.5-liter V8 for the coming 2007 season, ditching the seemingly smaller and lighter forced induction VQ30DETT V6 in the process.

A total of five 350Zs spread across four teams will contest the nine-race 2007 Super GT Championship which kicks off at Suzuka on March 18.

2007 ART Program 216 for Mercedes-Benz CL Class2007 ART Program 216 for Mercedes-Benz CL Class 22007 ART Program 216 for Mercedes-Benz CL Class 3

2007 ART Program 216 for Mercedes-Benz CL Class 4The ART aerodynamics set for the front and rear optimizes the contours of the vehicle with an individual touch. In perfect harmony with the series design of the front spoiler, fine parallel grooved lines enhance the vehicle’s front silhouette. The eye-catching elegant lines of the ART rear skirt give the series rear an entirely new appearance. A rear spoiler shaped like a separation edge on the rear hood is the third element in the ART design system for the exterior of this beautiful coupй.

The ART interior upgrades the vehicle with an alcantara roof liner and upholstery. Elegant combinations of alcantara and leather, in one or several colours, leather with contrasting seams, quilting and perforations, provide marked elegance. In conjunction with fine wood paneling in a variety of different woods and nuances, carbonized surfaces in magical colours, sports steering wheels with paddle shifter, steering wheels in alcantara/leather, leather/wood, and leather/carbon offer an extensive range to choose from for the design of the CL interior. Every custom feature is the owner’s choice. There are no limits to the individualization.

And under the hood: engine performance from ART includes a Vmax delimiter for the CL and electronic performance optimization of the motor control. They give the powerful series V8 and V12 power units that final performance kick.

The four highly polished chrome-plated 80mm tailpipes of the ART sports exhaust system with the ART logo draw the gaze to this successful rear skirt solution. One right and one left rear muffler ensure the sound is right.

The electronic suspension system from ART for the series ABC suspension system lowers the ride height by 25mm. All other built-in chassis control functions remain unchanged. Only the speed-dependent ride-height control is suppressed.

For the wheel concept, ART proposes the monoART1 light-weight metal rims in dimensions 18, 19 or 20 inches for the CL class. This individual choice of rims is multiplied by the range of three different surfaces:
- TITANIUM special coating with highly polished spoke backs
- TITANIUM special coating with allover silky-matt surface
- Black or customized color, even two-tone, special coating in NANO technology

The stylish three-part ARTstar2 light-weight metal rims are an equally good choice. With a 6-spoke design, with 36 titanium screw joints, inside valve, shiny-silver rim star and mirror-finished rim base it is offered in sizes 19 and 20 inches. To customize a car still further, it is possible to have the rim star and wheel-base painted in a special color. Of course, with a protective nano technology coating.

Volkswagen BlueMotion Polo

Seven hundred miles in a Volkswagen Polo may not sound like everyone's cup of tea, but that's what the BlueMotion Polo will do between fuel stops.

Volkswagen BlueMotion PoloVolkswagen BlueMotion Polo 2Volkswagen BlueMotion Polo 3BlueMotion is VW's new ultra-economical brand that will be applied to all of the most fuel-efficient cars in its range.

Not just a boot badge, the Polo BlueMotion's 1.4-litre turbodiesel has been modified to give greater torque at lower revs.

The gearbox has also been altered with longer gearing so the engine spins at lower revs when cruising.

VW has been busy lightening the Polo to get its overall weight down to 1,084kg, while some aerodynamic modifications to the front bumper make it more slippery through the air.

The result is Polo that returns 72.4mpg and produces 102g/km of carbon dioxide.

Performance is not unduly compromised, and the Polo BlueMotion manages 0-62mph in 12.8 seconds and 109mph.

VW will unveil the Polo BlueMotion at next month's Geneva motor show before it goes on sale in the UK this summer.

The head-turning special paintwork in original Ferrari red ROSSO CORSA No.322 is an unexpected sight. Combined with the thick-set bullishness of the upgraded exterior and the darkened windows, this vehicle is bound to grab attention wherever it appears.

And to get the ML350 moving: engine performance with an ART compressor system, including a charge-air intercooling system with a heat exchanger, thermostat-controlled additional oil heating, special V-belt, engine electronics and Vmax disable. The power boost on the ML takes it from 272 hp up to 380 hp.

The electronic chassis system from ART for AIRMATIC lowers the vehicle by 35mm. All other factory-set adjustment functions of the vehicle are retained. Only the speed-dependent ride height control is deactivated.

For the wheels, the three-part light-alloy ARTstar2 wheels with a titanium look make for a forceful connection to the ground. In its 6-spoke design, with 36-x titanium screws, inside valve, brilliant-silver rim star and mirror-polished rim bed, it provides in size 19 an absolute optimized and luxurious appearance for this bullish car body. No winter dream without winter tires: the tires used are the opulent 275/45R19 from PIRELLI.

Numerous highlights in alcantara and leather sumptiously upgrade the interior. The instrument board is in dolphin-gray alcantara with contrasting red seams, as are the vehicle ceiling, the front, center, and rear posts. The door and console paneling is in red leather. On the door paneling, padding under the leather makes for a chameus surface. The seats are upholstered in two-tone leather in grey / red and highlighted with neat constrasting seams.

An ergonomically formed multifunction sports steering wheel with perforated handles, in a dolphin-gray leather/alcantara combination with a contrasting red ring forms the crown of the ART interior upgrade.

Overall, an absolutely sophisticated unique item with all refinements. Individual, powerful and sumptuously equipped. A star on the road. DRIVE YOUR DREAM

Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

Volkswagen is getting very blue in the run-up to the Geneva motor show.

Yesterday we reported the start of its blue period with the Polo BlueMotion and now, mere hours later, we have the VW Passat BlueMotion
