Following the debut of the production-ready Ford Focus ST on the eve of the Frankfurt Motor Show, we bring you the first pictures of another fast Ford: this is the new Fiesta ST.
The Fiesta ST is a thinly veiled concept that confirms Ford’s intentions to launch a global performance version of its hit super-mini. It will follow in a long line of baby fast Fords that include the XR2, XR2i, RS1800, RS Turbo and the previous-generation ST.
It’s just a concept car for now, but we know a production version of the new Ford Fiesta ST will be revealed at the 2012 Geneva motor show and sales will start in the UK in next September.
Mechanically speaking, the Fiesta ST show car abides by the same mechanical formula used on its big brother.
The car is inspired by the Ford Fiesta WRC, it features a dynamic sports chassis and a high-performance powertrain with a 1.6-liter Ford EcoBoost® engine. That engine develops 177 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque, enough to propel it from 0-60 mph in less than seven seconds.
Similar to the 2.0-litre EcoBoost in the upcoming Focus ST, the Fiesta’s engine features Twin-independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and has been specially developed for the ST variant. The concept car uses a six-speed manual transmission and sends power exclusively to the front wheels.
