Volkswagen has just built its 25 millionth Golf, surpassing sales of even the company's perennial favourite, the Beetle.
The Golf has easily exceeded the 21 million Beetles sold and it's done it in a mere 33 years, compared to the Beetle's five decades in production.
With these figures in mind, it won't be long before the vehicle passes the Ford F-150 pick-up in the sales charts. The Ford has found 26 million customers, but sales are slowing.
The 25 millionth Golf was a 1.4 TSi model fitted with a DSG gearbox.
However, the VW still has some way to go to catch the world's best-selling car, the Toyota Corolla, which has a tally of more than 35 million over its 40-year lifespan.
