OSRAM SYLVANIA and its innovative Joule(TM) LED Signal System can be found on a pair of upcoming Ford Motor Company products.

The newly-named, redesigned 2008 Ford Taurus X (formerly the Ford Freestyle) and 2008 Mercury Sable (formerly the Mercury Montego) debuted at the recent Chicago Auto Show. Both vehicles will feature OSRAM's Joule System technology in their rear combination lamps (RCL) assemblies. Using LED technology for the rear signal functions makes it possible to create new and innovative lighting assembly designs and provides customers with "life of the vehicle" lighting performance.

OSRAM's Joule LED lighting system debuted on the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer, making standardized automotive LED technology available to consumers for the first time.

The first system of its kind, Joule makes LED technology more accessible in the marketplace by providing OEM designers with a reliable, industry standardized LED light source that simplifies the design process. With its integrated, standardized mounting and thermal management approach, Joule can be used on many vehicle platforms for RCL assemblies.

"As Ford has discovered, the Joule system provides their customers LED lighting without the complexity and cost of a custom LED assembly," said David Hulick, global product manager for automotive auxiliary lighting. "Joule is providing OEMs, and especially their design departments, with unlimited, yet energy-efficient LED solutions."

OSRAM SYLVANIA and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Inc. work together to offer a complete line of cutting-edge, award-winning, light emitting diode (LED) products for the automotive industry. Their product line spans the range, from individual LED components to Standardized Automotive LED Systems. OSRAM LED products help the auto industry take advantage of the functionality, durability, energy-savings, and styling potential that LEDs can provide.

First Drive: 2007 Honda Civic GX

Previews Greenie spendthrifts wanted: A heavier, slower Civic with a smaller trunk. Oh, yeah, and it costs 50 percent more. Never mind that we in Michigan are just emerging from our igloos after a long cold winter. The world is heating up, the ice caps are melting, and when that melt is complete, we’ll all be living high in the mountains in houses on stilts to stay dry. Forty days and 40 nights the waters will rage, and when the ice caps refreeze, we’ll all be fighting over who called first dibs on those last two pigs for our celebratory barbecues, since the unicorns were already eaten by sharks. There are people who would argue that that sinister little creation, the automobile, is responsible for it all. We blame Al Gore, China, sweatshops, and greenie celebrities who flit about in private jets. Those who want to make a difference drive hybrids, while those who researched their decision drive diesels. Those who are truly enlightened and want to make a difference, however, seek someth...
