There were a handful of competition cars scattered around the floor at McCormack Place during press days, but most of them could only be considered present-day racing machines.
And while not everyone at WINDING ROAD considers themselves to be a fan of today’s NASCAR roundy-round action, we can’t help but take some comfort (and find more than a little awe) in this 1967 Holman and Moody Ford Fairlane.
Mario Andretti led 112 of 200 laps of the 1967 Daytona 500 in this Firestone-shod racer, taking the checkered flag as the first open-wheel driver to win the event. The Andretti family has since gone on to have a long and lustrous affiliation with the tire maker, which is now part of Bridgestone. This vintage racer was part of the latter’s show stand, which was chock full of motorsports.
