Lotus said just before the German event that its facelifted version of the Exige S will have a new redesigned aggressive front fascia, and what better way to reveal this in the promo than placing it against a menacing looking boxer, which may have one out of two roles: symbolizing the Porsche Boxter or simply putting an accent on the aggressive front fascia of the Exige S. Being presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Exige S is powered by the same engine found on the Evora S, the 3.5 liter supercharged V6, delivering a total output of 345 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, with a total weight of 1.080 kg or 2.376 lbs. When Lotus invited us down to its test track in deepest Norfolk to see how the new 2-Eleven dealt with being pushed to its very limits, we thought it'd be a bit impolite to refuse. This is, after all, perhaps the most extreme road-legal beast ever to come out of Hethel. Lotus has taken the Elise's aluminium tub, added a modified running gear from the Exige S and bolted on all-new ultra-lightweight composite bodywork to create a stripped-down, hardcore racer. Throw in a 1.8-litre Toyota-sourced engine (supercharged, naturally) producing 262bhp and you've got a power-to-weight ratio of 338bhp per tonne and a car that'll dispatch 60mph in under four seconds - and 100mph in well under 10. After all the brouhaha about Lotus building a crossover and the number of twitchy moustaches that set off, we can reveal that the company has indeed been involved with developing a crossover. But this one won't be wearing a Lotus badge and nor will it use a normal internal combustion engine. ZAP is the company behind the ZAP-X Crossover and it was they who commissioned Lotus to help advance its electric drive system. The vehicle will use individual electric motors in the hubs of each individual wheels to give it four-wheel drive and also the ability to tailor the amount of power each wheel receives. Combined together, the four electric motors produce the equivalent of 644bhp, so the ZAP-X is set to be one of the swiftest crossovers out here, with the firm predicting a top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.8 secs. HETHEL, England — Well-heeled Lotus customers in Europe who want an extra dollop of comfort can now order the Europa S coupe with an optional Luxury Touring Pack. The package , introduced at the Geneva auto show, bundles leather upholstery and wood trim. The standard composite covers for such items as seats, steering wheel and instrument panel are now dressed in saddle tan and chocolate leather, accented with brown carpets. Lotus uses walnut and tulipwood for the engine start button and gearshift lever. The Luxury Touring Pack also includes tinted rear glass, body-color surrounds for the air intakes and driving lamps, and a silver-painted radiator grille. The package will be available in April, priced from $2,300.

GENEVA — Lotus Cars has pulled the wraps off the Exige GT3 , a concept it describes as "the most extreme Exige variant to date." The car was developed by the company's performance arm, Lotus Sport . The race-bred Exige GT3 for the street will go on sale in late 2007, priced from $96,000 to $115,000. The Exige GT3 is powered by a supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 271 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox. Lotus says top speed is limited to 160 mph. The chassis has been beefed up with Brembo brake components, Ohlins adjustable shocks and a Lotus Sport adjustable front stabilizer bar.
