The XKR-S Convertible embodies all the characteristics that have always defined legendary Jaguar GTs – explosive performance, precise handling, relaxed comfort and discreet luxury – while taking Jaguar into a new performance level. The new XKR-S Convertible sits at the pinnacle of the XK range, which now consists of XK, XKR and XKR-S derivatives in coupe and convertible body styles.

The XKR-S Convertible receives the performance, dynamics, design, and interior upgrades originally introduced on its coupe sibling to create the fastest ever open-top Jaguar GT.

Design.
Externally the XKR-S Convertible is differentiated from other XK models with carefully calibrated aerodynamic aids that allow it to perform at very high speeds. Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics, wind tunnel and track work has resulted in the aerodynamic design changes applied to the XKR-S Convertible. These perform an essential function in maintaining stability in an open-topped car capable of speeds as high as 186 mph.

These aerodynamic design changes give the front of the car a dramatic and bold appearance. Vertical feature lines run down from the edges of the oval air intake into a new bumper design which incorporates a wider, lower air intake, a carbon fiber splitter and twin side nacelles. At the edges of the bumper, vertical panels channel air down the side of the car along new sills, which serve to both smooth the horizontal airflow and emphasize the 0.4-inch reduction in ride height.

A unique rear wing with a carbon fiber inlay works in conjunction with a rear apron featuring a carbon fiber diffuser. The result is a reduction in overall lift of 26 percent and balanced aerodynamics front and rear to keep the car connected to the road.

The exterior changes are highlighted by the application of gloss black to the exterior bright work, complemented by the dark technical finish of the lightweight, forged 20” Vulcan design alloy wheels through which can be seen the Jaguar High Performance Brake calipers finished in either eye-catching red or discreet gunmetal. The XKR-S Convertible is available in a range of six colors, including Polaris White and British Racing Green, a tribute to Jaguar’s competition heritage. The acoustically treated convertible top opens and stows in just 18 seconds. It comes in black as standard with a further six optional fabric colors available.

Performance.
The building block for the car’s explosive performance is an updated version of the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, which produces 550 hp and 502lb-ft of torque. These figures represent a power increase of 40 hp (8 percent) and torque increase of 41lb-ft (9 percent) over the Jaguar XKR. Driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox and an Active Differential, this propels the XKR-S Convertible to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100 kmh in 4.4 seconds) and up to an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.

The inherent engineering integrity of the acclaimed Jaguar AJ-V8 engine, now in its third generation, meant that Jaguar engineers could derive the extra power and torque needed for the XKR-S. The advanced design of the quad-cam, all-aluminum V8 incorporates spray-guided direct injection and variable valve timing for great efficiency as well as prodigious power. The Roots-type twin-vortex supercharger nestling in the ‘V’ of the engine has twin intercoolers and is 20 percent more thermodynamically efficient than its predecessor.

Liberating an extra 40 hp over and above the XKR entailed remapping the fueling characteristics and increasing exhaust gas flow through the use of an active exhaust system.

With the convertible top lowered, the Performance Active exhaust system delivers an authentic, motorsports inspired soundtrack that has been tuned to provide the driver with a thoroughly exhilarating driving experience.

Chassis Dynamics.
Jaguar pioneered the use of aluminum in series production cars. The low mass and high tensile strength of aluminum helps give the XKR-S torsional rigidity of 16,500 Newton meters per degree. With the XK model designed as a convertible from the outset, Jaguar engineers were able to apply the changes that created the XKR-S Coupe into the open-top GT without compromising performance, agility or refinement. Supporting this potent engine performance is a comprehensive package of suspension upgrades which refine the XK model’s dynamic abilities further, creating an intimate connection between the car, the driver and the road.

Both front and rear suspension systems have been revised. A new aluminum steering knuckle in the front double wishbone suspension increases camber stiffness by 23 percent to provide even greater levels of steering accuracy and feedback. To increase stability and control, the Active Differential has been uprated to reduce steering sensitivity at high speeds.

Rear damper top mounts have been stiffened, while the rear wheel steer effect has been optimized for agility. Spring rates front and rear have been increased by 28 percent while a bespoke Adaptive Damping program for the XKR-S maximizes body control, traction and grip.

Unsprung mass has been reduced by nearly five percent through the fitment of lightweight, forged alloy wheels, which also offer greater traction and grip levels thanks to wider rear tires that were specifically developed for use on the XKR-S and serve to increase the size of the tire contact patch. The XKR-S convertible rides on Pirelli® PZero® tires (255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 at the rear).

In order to allow the enthusiastic driver to explore the performance envelope, the Dynamic Stability Control system has undergone customized changes. In TracDSC mode, specific traction, stability and Active Differential settings reduce intervention levels and enhance mid-corner adjustability, allowing the exhilarating handling to be exploited to the fullest.

The Jaguar High Performance Braking System fitted as standard is matched to the car’s seductive performance. Huge brake discs – 15 inch front and 14 inch rear – in combination with aluminum calipers and pad area increases of 44 percent front and 31 percent rear in comparison to the XK provide inspiring levels of power, stability and feel.

Interior.
With the convertible top down, the interior of the XKR-S will be subject to as many envious glances as the exterior, with both highlighting the car’s high performance intent.

Exclusive to the XKR-S models are carbon-leather trimmed versions of Jaguar Performance seats which feature integrated head rests, racing harness cut-outs and increased side bolster support to hold driver and passenger securely during high speed cornering. The 16-way adjustable, heated seats feature highlights of carbon leather and contrast micro piping unique to the model, while carbon leather is also used to accent the cabin and emphasize the car’s assertive nature.

Superb tactile interfaces are provided by the multifunction three-spoke leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and Jaguar-embossed bright stainless steel pedals.

Other premium surfaces include soft-feel paint for the switches and a gloss black center console. An exclusive dark aluminum finish is available as standard with an optional Piano Black finish also available.

The Ford Escape, America’s best-selling SUV, will raise the bar even higher with the debut of an all-new model that features 11 new exclusive features and fuel economy projected to top any vehicle of its kind on the market today.

Spirited performance with outstanding fuel economy.
Escape offers Ford’s broadest nameplate range of EcoBoost® engine choices yet. Strong fuel economy comes from either the available 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine or 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, which makes its American debut in the new Escape.

Both new engines combine EcoBoost’s core technologies of direct fuel injection and turbocharging and add twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to deliver even better miles per gallon and save customers money on fuel.

In Escape, EcoBoost engines are mated to specially calibrated, six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmissions, which are standard and allow drivers who want more hands-on experiences to manually control gear selection from a switch on the left-hand side of the shifter.

The gearbox features a new torque converter for improved driving feel, silky smooth shifts and even better fuel economy. Engineers also installed revised gear ratios for a balanced driving feel in all situations.

The standard engine in North America is an updated 2.5-liter, giving the new Escape a comprehensive lineup of four-cylinder offerings. It also is matched to a SelectShift Automatic six-speed.

Grille slats stay open when extra engine cooling air is required, such as low-speed stop-and-go driving. When cruising on the highway at steady speeds, the grille slats automatically close to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

Versatility and capability come standard.
Stowing and towing are even easier in the new five-passenger Escape, thanks to a low liftover height of 27 inches, more innovations and cargo volume that surpasses the outgoing Escape – with 68.1 cubic feet of space behind the first row and 34.3 cubic feet behind the second row.

The new Escape’s rear seats have been designed to fold flat easily. With the touch of a button, the head restraint folds down and with the lift of a handle on the seat, the seatback folds and dives as the seat folds flat and clicks into position.

Engaging driving performance through seamless system
Using new advanced software and sensors, the new Intelligent 4WD System analyzes data from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle, assessing road conditions and driver input 20 times faster than the blink of an eye.

The system uses all the sensor inputs to turn the vehicle in the direction the driver wants it to go. Intelligent 4WD builds on the pre-emptive actions by adding and subtracting torque as needed through an electromagnetic clutch.

New SUV goes global.
Following its world debut in Los Angeles, this new vehicle will head to Europe, where sales of compact sport utilities have grown 200 percent since 2000. It will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March for European customers as the all-new version of the Ford Kuga and will have unique powertrains and features. Chinese customers also will see the all-new Kuga next spring.

Porsche Panamera GTS : 2012

Porsche unveiled the Porsche Panamera GTS at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Panamera GTS is the purest expression of a sports sedan in the Porsche family with a clear focus on performance.

The new Panamera GTS is based on the Panamera 4S and includes more power, upgraded brakes and a body lowered by ten millimeters with new, sportier chassis tuning coupled to air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). These technical modifications make the Panamera model even more capable of cutting it on the race track without sacrificing practicality. The sportiest of all Panamera models also conveys this to occupants and the outside world by its striking sound. In terms of looks, the new Panamera GTS includes distinctive design features at the front, side and rear as well as black highlights. The interior is also tailored to its sporty personality with adaptive sports seats, SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and exclusive GTS leather interior with Alcantara surfaces.

The Panamera GTS is powered by a modified 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 430 hp at 6,700 rpm, increasing the output over the Panamera S/4S by 30 hp. The maximum torque also increases by comparison, from 369 to 384 lb. ft. At the push of a button, thanks to the standard Sport Chrono package, the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission transmits the engine output to the all-wheel drive system during gear changes without interruption to the power flow. This collaboration enables the Panamera GTS to sprint to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, accelerating on to its top track speed of 178 mph.

The 0-60 figures and top speed only scratch the surface of the new Panamera GTS’s sporty character. Its chassis in particular makes it fit for the race track: the adaptive air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) connect the chassis and body, constantly adapting to the driving challenges by regulating leveling settings, adjusting height, modifying the spring rate and electrically modulating the damping system. The body has been lowered by ten millimeters and the damping designed to be tauter, which helps agility and further reinforces the sporty personality of the Panamera GTS. Five millimeter wheel spacers between the wheel and the wheel hubs increase the rear axle track width, giving the Panamera even more stability. The required grip is provided by standard 255/45 size 19-inch tires on the front axle and 285/40 on the rear axle. Optional 20-inch wheels are available with 255/40 tires on the front and 295/35 on the rear.

Deceleration on the sporty Panamera is provided by the braking system from the Panamera Turbo, which includes larger diameter front brake rotors than Panamera S/4S. Like all other Porsche models, the Panamera is available with the optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), featuring brake calipers finished in yellow.

The sports car among Sports Sedans.
The Panamera GTS is the purest member of the Porsche Panamera family. The heart of the new Panamera GTS is its upgraded 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine benefiting from numerous modifications to give it even better performance. Compared with the Panamera S/4S, these modifications result in a 30 hp increase in engine output and an increase in torque of 15 lb. ft. to 384 lb. ft. at 3,500 rpm.

To achieve these enhancements, the engineers increased the speed at which the engine reaches peak power by 200 rpm; the GTS’s eight-cylinder engine achieves maximum output at 6,700 rpm. Redline was extended by 400 rpm to 7,100 rpm. The higher engine speed capabilities are enabled by modified valve springs, ensuring that the valves open and shut precisely in all circumstances.

In addition to the increase in redline; the engine in the Panamera GTS employs a higher-flow air intake system. At low speeds, flaps close each of the two air intake openings. At engine speeds above 3,500 rpm, both flaps open and allow additional air flow into the inlet duct. In order to be able to handle the increased flow of combustion air, two new camshafts with a one millimeter increase in lift control the intake valves. As a result, especially at higher revs, the engine draws in more air and, with it, the engine makes more power.

Hearing performance: Sound Symposer transmits intake noises.
At the push of the Sport button, driver and passengers can hear the GTS engine “breathing” even more than usual as a ‘Sound Symposer’ directs the intake sounds into the interior. This is accomplished with the addition of an acoustic channel, which picks up the intake vibrations between the throttle valve and air filter. The acoustic channel incorporates a membrane that transmits the vibrations as an engine sound into the A-pillar. A controllable valve located in front of the membrane enables the Sound Symposer to be activated or deactivated by means of the Sport button.

Exhaust gases exit the Panamera GTS through a standard sport exhaust system. This exhaust comes with larger diameter pipes to reduce back pressure and black exhaust tips. This too, is another building block toward increased power output, and one which adds additional aural excitement: the sport exhaust system features two tuning flaps, which expose additional exhaust openings, thereby emitting an even more powerful sound. The flaps are controlled by a switch in the center console, which features a “last mode” function that remembers the last setting when the engine is restarted.

The control of the GTS engine is handled by modified and upgraded engine controls. The new system has been tuned for improved torque and responsiveness. The modified engine management system also enables a brief shutoff of individual cylinders when changing gears, allowing the engine speed to adjust even faster to the transmission speed. This further reduces gear change times and is accompanied a short, sharp report from the exhaust system, particularly audible when downshifting in Sport mode.

Sport Chrono Plus Package for individual sportiness.
The Panamera GTS comes standard with the Sport Chrono package, which in addition to Normal and Sport modes offers a Sport Plus program as well. Specific characteristics of the Panamera GTS are further accentuated depending on which mode is selected: for example, activating Sport Plus mode enhances gear-shift parameters and throttle response and includes Launch Control for faster off-the-line acceleration.

Moreover, in Sport Plus mode the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) stabilization system intervenes later. The Sport Plus mode offers even greater agility with the PSM deactivated. For safety’s sake however it remains on permanent standby in the background, intervening automatically if both front wheels are in the ABS control range. In addition, the adaptive air suspension lowers the vehicle to the low setting and switches to a harder spring rate. The rear spoiler angle of attack also changes to the performance-oriented setting.

Options for even greater driving dynamics: PDCC and PTV Plus.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is the final level of development of the Panamera GTS chassis, paired with an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock and PTV Plus. PDCC prevents the body from rolling by using active stabilizers on the front and rear axle to apply a counteracting force.

PDCC is further enhanced by Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). The system works by varying the torque distribution to the rear wheels and by employing an electronically regulated rear differential lock, optimizing steering behavior. Braking interventions applied to the inside rear wheel generate an additional rotational pulse in the direction in which the steering wheel has been turned. This results in a direct and dynamic steering action as the car enters the curve.

PTV Plus improves steering behavior and precision by modulating braking interventions to the rear wheels when the car is being driven in a highly dynamic way. When entering a corner, braking force is applied to the inside rear wheel as the steering maneuver begins. This imparts greater drive torque to the outside rear wheel and improves the car’s agility.

The aerodynamics of the Panamera GTS are on par with the Panamera Turbo: with its large air intake openings, the standard front fascia from the Panamera’s SportDesign package emphasizes the vehicle’s sporty dynamics and ensures an optimal air supply for the larger air filters unique to the GTS. This is matched in the rear section by fitting the adaptively deploying four-way rear spoiler from the Panamera Turbo. At speeds of 125 mph and above, it positions itself to generate downforce on the rear axle, thereby ensuring stable driving safety at high speeds.

Exterior: Sporty at first glance.
The exterior features a high-gloss black exterior package as standard, comprised of side window trim, decorative trim on the rear lid, the headlight washer unit cover, the rear diffuser and the side air outlet panels. Together with the black front fascia grills, black side skirts, black lower rear fascia the sport exhaust system’s matte black tailpipes, the resulting appearance is striking.

A further point of differentiation: Bi-Xenon headlights with black inner bezels. They feature four LED daytime running lights. Optional paintwork in Carmine Red, available exclusively for the Panamera GTS, emphasizes the vehicle’s sportiness and provides an ideal contrast with the black exterior accessories.

Interior: Acceleration display, unique appointments.
The Panamera GTS includes a lateral and longitudinal acceleration display. The multi-function display in the instrument cluster and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system informs the driver about the instantaneous acceleration.

The Panamera GTS’s interior includes leather and Alcantara trimmed seats in a choice of five colors. The standard adaptive 18-way adjustable sport seats feature Alcantara center panels. Alcantara trim is also used on the upper sections of the door armrests and front center console armrest, as well as the roofliner. The SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and a twelve hour marking on the steering wheel combines dynamic looks with sporty functionality. This steering wheel can also be clad with black Alcantara if so desired. To ensure clear differentiation, the front brushed aluminum door entry guards are adorned with “Panamera GTS” lettering. “GTS” lettering is also found in the instrument cluster and on the embroidered headrests.

Porsche has put together two special optional interior equipment packages for the Panamera GTS. These packages marry a black interior with decorative stitching on the seats, foot mats, dashboard, door panels, center console armrest and doors, executed in Carmine Red or GT silver. Embroidered “GTS” lettering on the headrests and safety belts is also in the corresponding color.

Audi S8 : 2012

The Audi S8, which will be launched on the market in spring 2012, is the new head of the Audi S model family – a large, luxurious sedan of supreme power.

The new 4.0 TFSI in the S8 generates no less than 382 kW (520 hp) and delivers a constant 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft between 1,700 and 5,500 rpm. The result is outstanding performance: The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) takes just 4.2 seconds, and top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

This makes the fuel consumption of the sonorous and smooth twin-turbo V8 all the more amazing: It averages just 10.2 liters per 100 km (23.06 US mpg), much less than its competitors. The free-breathing, 5.2-liter V10 in the previous model consumed an average of 13.2 liters per 100 km (17.82 US mpg). Fuel consumption decreased by nearly 23 percent despite a 51 kW (70 hp) increase in output.

Behind the top value for the new Audi S8 are the combined technologies of the Audi modular efficiency platform, including the recuperation and start-stop systems. The newly developed “cylinder on demand” technology plays a particularly large role. Under part load, it deactivates four of the eight cylinders for an efficiency gain that is particularly pronounced at moderate highway speeds. A package of acoustic measures including the Active Noise Cancellation system suppresses possible intrusive noise and vibrations.

The eight-speed tiptronic in the S8 also unites sportiness and efficiency. It uses tall gears at low revs whenever possible, but downshifts quickly and comfortably when requested by the driver. The tiptronic delivers the power to a quattro drivetrain combining a self-locking center differential with the sport differential at the rear axle. During dynamic driving, the lion’s share of the power flows to the outside wheel to literally push the large sedan into the corner.

Chassis.
The new Audi S8 also pulls out all the stops when it comes to the chassis. One of its features is a specially tuned adaptive air suspension with variable damping, which can vary the ride height of the body between three levels and thus ensures a wide-ranging driving experience. It harmonizes perfectly with the dynamic steering, also standard, that adapts its steering ratio and boost to the vehicle’s speed. It uses slight, nearly imperceptible steering corrections to stabilize handling at the cornering limit.

The Audi drive select dynamics system encompasses these two systems as well as engine management, the eight-speed tiptronic and the sport differential. The driver can determine the function of these components by choosing between the five modes comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and efficiency.

The standard, S-specific wheels measure 9 J x 20 and are shod with 265/40-series tires. Audi offers five additional wheels as options, four of which have a 21-inch diagonal. The four internally ventilated disc brakes measure 400 millimeters (15.75 in) in diameter up front and 365 millimeters (14.37 in) at the rear. The matt black calipers up front bear S8 logos. Each of the optional carbon fiber-ceramic discs saves over five kilograms (11 lb) of weight. Their calipers are anthracite gray. The ESP stabilization program includes a sport mode, in which engine output is determined solely by the position of the pedals.

Body and design.
A decisive advantage of the S8 is the comparatively low weight of 1,975 kilograms (4,354.13 lb). The luxury sedan’s ASF (Audi Space Frame) body is made almost entirely of aluminum. Only the B-pillars are made of ultra high-strength steel. The body weighs just 231 kilograms (509.27 lb); a conventional steel construction would be around 100 kilograms (220.46 lb) heavier. The Audi ultra-lightweight construction allows weight to be reduced in other areas as well, such as the chassis.

Fine design details signal the special position that the 5.15 meter-long (16.90 ft) S8 occupies in the Audi range. The single-frame grille is platinum gray and its eight double bars are covered in chrome. An aluminum-look blade makes the bumper appear sharper, and there are high-gloss black slats and aluminum-look ribs in the side air intakes.

On the sides, body color trim strips on the sills, door handles with strips of aluminum and polished aluminum-look mirror housings catch the eye. The diffuser insert at the back of the car includes a blade with a two-layer aluminum-look finish offset with parts in platinum gray. The exhaust system ends in two oval dual tailpipes in a chrome-look finish.

S8 or V8 T badges can be found in the front, on the back and on the sides. The color range includes 13 shades, two of which – Daytona Gray and Prism Silver – are reserved for the S8.

Interior.
The interior shines with craftsman-like fit and finish and small yet effective accents. The multi-way, power-adjustable comfort sport seats have been designed exclusively for the S8. They are optionally available with exclusive seat upholstery in quilted lunar silver. The stitching and piping are in contrasting steel gray, while the upper inlays on the instrument panel and tiptronic selector lever present the material Carbon Atlas.

The leather multifunction sport steering wheel has color-contrasting stitching and an S8 emblem, which can also be found on the instruments. Typical of the Audi S models, these have gray dials with white needles – a design which is repeated in the classic analogue clock. The illuminated door sill trims with the S8 logo are a further eye-catcher. The display of the driver information system and the MMI monitor greet the driver with special S8 screens. The shift paddles and pedals are in an aluminum-look finish; a red ring frames the start button.

The S8 offers a wide selection of interior colors, inlays and seat upholstery. These include particularly soft Valcona leather and seats with ventilation and massage functions. The leather package, a DVD changer, the convenience key with sensor-controlled lock for the trunk and the ambient lighting package round out the list of standard interior equipment. The Audi S8 is also equipped with the innovative LED headlights and double glazing.

Equipment.
Beyond the generous standard equipment, Audi makes all of the high-end options from the A8 series available in the new S8. The driver assistance systems, which are closely networked with one another and the navigation system, are particularly innovative.

The core of these is the adaptive cruise control system with stop & go function; others include Audi side assist, Audi lane assist, the speed limit display and the night vision assistant with highlighting of detected pedestrians.
Supplementing these technologies is the safety system Audi pre sense, which is available in a number of versions. A new break recommendation function uses steering motions and additional parameters to detect if the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning.

New to the A8 family is the parking system with 360° camera. Four small cameras record images of the sedan’s immediate surroundings and a computer splices them together. The driver can call up a variety of views on the MMI monitor, including a virtual top-down view. The system enhances safety while maneuvering and in narrow driveways. Special views allow the driver to see cross-traffic.

The MMI navigation plus, which comes standard, represents the state-of-the-art in infotainment systems. It includes the groundbreaking MMI touch input system, a large hard drive and a high-resolution 8-inch display. The high-end system can be combined with the likewise standard Bluetooth online car phone, which brings special Internet services to the car and provides WLAN connectivity for mobile devices.

Cadillac has unveiled the 2013 XTS, the newest addition to the Cadillac luxury sedan lineup. It arrives in showrooms in the spring of 2012 as the most technologically advanced production car in the brand’s history.

Larger than the CTS, the new XTS delivers the space, elegance and dramatic presence that are Cadillac signatures, but with entirely new and technically advanced methods tuned for a new generation of luxury customers. It also marks the debut of CUE, a comprehensive in-vehicle experience that merges intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and media data.

In addition to the CUE interface and connectivity, many other advanced technologies are integral to the new XTS. It will be the only luxury sedan with standard Magnetic Ride Control – the world’s fastest-reacting suspension. Advanced technologies that enhance vision are available as well.

Positioned directly above the centerpiece CTS family in Cadillac’s revamped lineup, the new XTS features a 3.6L direct injection engine and advanced all-wheel drive system, marking a shift to more-efficient performance in a spacious luxury sedan.

“The Cadillac XTS represents a new formula for luxury, driven by advanced technology,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. “XTS showcases the evolution of our Art & Science philosophy, merging the best technical ideas with the continued refinement of Cadillac design.”

Cadillac CUE is the highly customizable user interface that exemplifies XTS’ blend of advanced technology and artistic design. The heart of CUE, which stands for Cadillac User Experience, is the standard eight-inch (203 mm) screen in the “center stack,” the faceplate below the screen and the steering wheel controls. CUE features several industry firsts, including capacitive-touch control with proximity sensing, gesture recognition and natural voice recognition.

Available exclusively on the XTS is the 12.3-inch (312 mm) reconfigurable cluster. It features vibrant graphic displays showcased among four driver-selectable themes, ranging from minimal to extensive information. And while it is the prominent element in the XTS’ technological character, CUE is part of a more comprehensive and layered approach to the car’s design, capabilities and performance

“The more you look, the more layers you see in XTS,” said Butler. “They aren’t always apparent to the eye, but they build on one another in important ways to reinforce the car’s strength of design, comfort and driving experience.”

It offers more interior space than midsize luxury cars and comparable to full-size sedans, particularly in the rear seat area, where it has 40 inches (1,016 mm) of rear legroom. That’s about four more inches than the BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class and about two more inches than the Audi A6 – and comparable to larger sedans.

And when it comes to trunk space, the XTS is in a league of its own, with 18 cubic feet (509 L), exceeding both midsize and full-size competitors – more than Audi A6 and A8L, BMW 5 and 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz E- and S-Class. For XTS customers, the cargo advantage means room for five or more suitcases.

Technology reinforces multidimensional design philosophy.
XTS’ hardware and spatial dimensions are the foundational layers that support a new level of surface detail. Multidimensional exterior and interior elements, including the grille, headlamps and new use of accent lighting, coalesce to give the XTS a presence and attention to detail unlike any Cadillac that has come before it.

“The XTS’ technology is woven into its design in ways that affirm the driving experience is of primary importance to a new generation of luxury customers,” said Clay Dean, design director and Cadillac brand champion. “This is the new expression of luxury at Cadillac and it shows in the multilayered details, authentic materials and unprecedented connectivity.”

CUE, for example, represents the pinnacle of technology, but it is being showcased using a subtle and sophisticated interior appearance that blends with other features to create a soothing and inviting feel. It offers more capability and driver-selectable choices than ever before from Cadillac, but the center stack has only seven buttons – four of them for the radio. That’s less than half the controls found on the center stack of the typical car.

“Technology helps the XTS deliver more with less,” said Dean. “Choreographed interior lighting and other unique features tailored to individual driver preferences complement CUE to create an exceptionally refined and advanced ambience.”

The XTS’ surface details also convey a more-nuanced design philosophy, with elements that support the long, sleek proportion that is a welcome return to Cadillac. They bring forward more beauty and elegance with refined, graceful forms and surfaces working harmoniously with established Cadillac linear forms. It is a car that conveys the next step in Cadillac form and surface vocabulary.

“It is a bold, elegant design and also very efficient in the ways it encompasses passengers and cargo,” said Dean. “It’s a new proportion for Cadillac and a new era in luxury.”

The XTS Platinum is the fullest expression of Cadillac’s multidimensional philosophy, with features that include a chrome/satin-chrome grille finish, polished 20-inch aluminum wheels with chrome inserts, a fully wrapped leather interior with Alcantara headliner and more.

Advanced safety features based on ‘control and alert’ strategy.
The XTS’ technology fundamentally supports a suite of advanced safety features, based on a “control and alert” strategy that extends the vision around the vehicle. It helps drivers identify potential crash situations and even intervenes when a crash threat appears more imminent, employing layers of visual, audible and tactile (vibration) alerts, depending on the alert feature.

The alerts are designed to identify obstacles with sufficient warning to give the driver time to react and make changes – including the Safety Alert Seat feature, which vibrates either the left or right side of the driver’s seat cushion, depending on the location of the impending concern. The intervening features, including Automatic Collision Preparation, take over if the threat appears more immediate or the driver does not react to previous alerts.

Two levels of control-and-alert protection are offered in the XTS’ Enhanced Safety Strategy (ESS) packages.

AWD and Magnetic Ride Control support new driving experience.
A layered approach to the driving experience relies on new and established technologies – all rooted in a stiff structure. The body is infused with strategically placed ultra-high-strength steel for strength and crash protection and serves as the foundation for the advanced-chassis system.

A smart Haldex all-wheel-drive system – with an electronic limited-slip differential that splits torque between the rear wheels – complements an advanced HiPer Strut front suspension and standard Magnetic Ride Control real-time damping to give the XTS sure-footed, confident and comfortable ride and handling traits. A linked H-arm design with “air springs” comprises the rear suspension.

HiPer Strut is based on the MacPherson strut front suspension design and features dual-path top mountings that separate the transfer of spring and damper loads to the body structure. It improves ride-and-handling characteristics in four significant ways:

• Provides more linear and communicative steering through improved camber control
• Improves impact isolation on bumps and rough surfaces
• Reduces torque steer
• Improves vehicle sensitivity to tire irregularities and wheel imbalance.

Magnetic Ride Control delivers precise body motion control – “reading” the road every millisecond and changing damping in just five milliseconds. It replaces conventional mechanical-valve shocks with electronically controlled shocks filled with a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles. Under the presence of magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance almost instantly.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control is standard on all models, along with variable-effort steering and Brembo four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel antilock brakes – all features that add important layers of control to the driving experience. Like Magnetic Ride Control, XTS borrows the Brembo braking technology from Cadillac’s V-Series of high performance models.

Horsepower for the XTS comes from an advanced 3.6L V-6 that’s known by its “LFX” engine code. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW). Lightweight features help reduce overall weight for greater efficiency and a more favorable front-to-rear weight balance. Examples include a composite intake manifold saves approximately 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) over the weight of a comparable aluminum intake and an integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design that saves approximately 13 pounds (6 kg) per engine.

The LFX engine is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission with tap-shift control.

The XTS will begin production in Oshawa, Ontario in spring 2012.

Volkswagen Passat Alltrack : 2012

Over the past four decades, well over 15 million Passat cars have been built. Along with its favourable all-round qualities, the success of the bestseller – which is sold on all of the world’s continents – can be attributed to the Passat’s wide and diverse range of versions.

Now, Volkswagen is extending the model series with another specialist: the Passat Alltrack.

This new version is offered in an estate car configuration, and it closes the gap between the conventional Passat Estate and SUVs such as the Tiguan.

The rationale here: many car drivers who use their car as a towing vehicle, or in light off-road situations, want a versatile, sporty and very roomy passenger car that has rugged qualities. Volkswagen developed the Passat Alltrack for this clientele.

In comparison with the familiar Passat Estate, the new model is defined by new bumpers in SUV style – with wheel well and side sill flares. Its greater off-road ramp angle, approach angle, departure angle and higher ground clearance all make the Passat Alltrack an excellent SUV alternative for driving on unpaved track.

Two turbocharged direct injection petrol engines (TSI) with 118 kW / 160 PS and 155 kW / 210 PS and two turbodiesels (TDI) – also with direct injection – with 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS are available in the Passat Alltrack.

The two most powerful Alltrack versions, the 170 PS TDI and the 210 PS TSI, have standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a dual clutch transmission (DSG). For the Passat Alltrack with a 140 PS TDI, Volkswagen will offer all-wheel drive as an option.

Just how efficiently the engines of the Passat Alltrack operate together with the intelligently controlled 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is illustrated by the two TDI engines: the 140 PS version has a low combined fuel consumption of 5.7 l/100 km (equivalent to 150 g/km CO2), while fuel consumption for the 170 PS version is 5.8 l/100 km (152 g/km CO2).

The Alltrack will debut in a world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show (December 3 to 11); market launch for the new versatile Alltrack begins in early 2012.

Audi A1 S-line : 2012

Audi is extending the A1 family – the A1 Sportback is coming in early 2012. The five-door model is emotional and individual, communicative and youthful, sporty and efficient. The A1 Sportback hopes to build on the success of the three-door A1.

The S line exterior package option has smart and sporty details. The accessories program for the A1 Sportback will later include kits with aerodynamic add-on parts and colorful decal sets.

Upon request, Audi will paint the roof line – the roof arch, the roof and the roof spoiler – in one of three contrasting colors.

A choice of 12 paint finishes are available, including the new color Samoa Orange, which is exclusive to the A1 Sportback.

The Audi A1 Sportback is 3.95 meters (12.96 ft) long and has a wheelbase of 2.47 meters (8.10 ft), just like the three-door model. It is six millimeters (0.24 in) wider and taller than the three-door model, however, at 1.75 meters (5.74 ft) and 1.42 meters (4.66 ft), respectively. Its aerodynamics have been fine-tuned so that the base version boasts a coefficient of drag of just 0.32.

Lightweight and rigid: the body.
High- and ultra high-strength steels comprise roughly two-thirds of the A1 Sportback’s body. The strongest of these are the hot-shaped steels, which are used primarily in the occupant cell. A large temperature increase during the shaping process lends them their extremely high tensile strength. Hot-shaped steels make thinner walls and thus a lower weight possible.

The lightweight body lays the groundwork for the low gross weight – the A1 Sportback 1.2 TFSI tips the scales at just 1,065 kilograms (2,347.92 lb). The body is also very rigid and impact-resistant yet quiet on the road. The product of these strengths is the outstanding driving sensation of the compact Audi. Sportily precise and free of vibrations and intrusive noise, it is reminiscent of cars from a larger class.

Spacious: the interior.
The interior of the Audi A1 Sportback is spacious, bright and airy, with dramatically elegant lines. The instrument panel, whose front slopes gradually toward the cabin, resembles an airplane wing. The center console is inclined slightly toward the driver; the four round air vents are reminiscent of jet engines. The console on the center tunnel is reminiscent of the rear of a sailing yacht.

The intuitively simple controls are a classic Audi strength, as is the high-quality workmanship. Numerous lovingly designed details, such as the precise click of the knobs for the air conditioner or the stitching on the leather steering wheel, illustrate the premium character of the A1 Sportback.

The A1 Sportback comes standard with four seats; a fifth seat is optional. They provide a sportily low seating position and good support. Headroom and shoulder room have each been increased roughly one centimeter (0.39 in) compared with the three-door sister model. All four doors offer ample storage. Cup holders and a 12V outlet are standard, with a storage package available as an option.

The luggage compartment of the A1 Sportback has a capacity of 270 liters (9.53 cu ft). Folding down the split rear seat increases this to 920 liters (32.49 cu ft). The L-shaped, deeply retractable head restraints do not have to be removed to do this. The loading lip is a comfortably low 66 centimeters (25.98 in). The optional luggage compartment package makes loading even more practical, with usefully divided storage compartments under the loading floor and other amenities.

Powerful and efficient: the drivetrain.
The Audi A1 Sportback is available with a choice of six four-cylinder engines: three TFSI and three TDI units. All of the engines follow the downsizing principle – they substitute forced induction for displacement and draw their fuel through direct injection units. All versions except the 1.6 TDI with S tronic and the most powerful gasoline engine are equipped with a start-stop system.

The base engine, the 1.2 TFSI, produces 63 kW (86 hp). Particularly effective thermal management contributes to its low fuel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km (46.12 US mpg). The two 1.4-liter TFSI engines produce 90 kW (122 hp) and 136 kW (185 hp). The top-of-the-line gasoline engine is supercharged and turbocharged, resulting in 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque, a zero-to-100 km/h (62.14 mph) time of 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 227 km/h (141.05 mph).

Three TDI units round out the lineup. The 1.6-liter engine is available in two different versions, with 66 kW (90 hp) and 77 kW (105 hp). When paired with a manual transmission, both versions consume just 3.8 liters of fuel per 100 km (61.90 US mpg) on average, which corresponds to only 99 grams of CO2/km (159.33 g/mile). The 105 kW (143 hp) 2.0 TDI to follow later accelerates the A1 Sportback to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.5 seconds, yet its average fuel consumption is just 4.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (57.37 US mpg).

The transmission also underscores the high-tech character of the A1 Sportback and its special position in the compact segment. Audi offers the seven-speed S tronic as an option with the 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp) and 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp); it comes standard with the top TFSI model with 136 kW (185 hp). The dual-clutch transmission shifts comfortably, extremely quickly and with no perceptible interruption to the flow of power. The two clutches do not need a separate oil supply, making the S tronic even more efficient.

The driver can let the seven-speed S tronic, which also includes a hill hold assist, shift automatically or control it manually. Shift paddles on the steering wheel are available as an option. The manual transmissions – with a five-speed or six-speed gearbox depending on the engine – also offer the perfect combination of sportiness and efficiency.

Sporty and stable: the chassis.
Whether in the city, on an interurban road or on the highway – the A1 Sportback is always great fun to drive. The front suspension is a McPherson construction; a torsion beam axle is used in the back. The weight distribution is in perfect harmony with the front-wheel drive system. The sensitive and efficient electrohydraulic steering is very direct with a ratio of 14.8:1.

The chassis is tuned for agility. It is even sportier in the Ambition trim line and more dynamic again with the S line sport suspension.

The Attraction trim line includes 15-inch steel wheels, while the Ambition comes with 16-inch alloy wheels (1.4 TFSI with 136 kW (185 hp) comes standard with 17-inch wheels). Audi offers 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with 215/40-series tires as an option. The new seven-spoke design is exclusive to the five-door model. The optional 18-inch alloy wheels from quattro GmbH provide for an even sportier appearance.

The Audi A1 Sportback has powerful brakes, with internally ventilated front discs. The ESP stabilization program with electronic limited slip differential, which comes standard on all models, makes the handling even more precise while also enhancing driving safety. It minimizes understeer at the limit by braking the inside front wheel slightly, which also improves traction.

Individual: the equipment.
The Audi A1 Sportback will debut with an extensive array of standard features. The base Attraction line already comes equipped with manual air conditioning, a split rear seat, a radio remote-controlled central locking system, power-adjustable side mirrors, power windows, the chorus radio and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Safety equipment comprises two front airbags, two thorax/pelvic side airbags and two head airbags. Belt force limiters, the integral Audi headrest system and Isofix anchor points for child safety seats in the rear round out the program.

Exterior details identifying the Ambition line are 16-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss exhaust tailpipes and fog lights. The sport seats include lumbar supports, and the passenger seat is also height-adjustable. The shift lever, the steering wheel and the handbrake lever are covered in leather; some areas of the cabin are highlighted with aluminum-look trim and the air vents are in high-gloss black. The driver information system includes the on-board computer with efficiency program and gear-change indicator (with manual transmission). Special seat upholstery and interior color choices round out the Ambition line.

Many individual options reflect the high-tech expertise of the A1 Sportback. These include the xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights, the high-beam assistant, the light and rain sensor, the panoramic sunroof, the convenience key, the alarm system, two different parking system versions and cruise control, to name a few.

Audi also offers deluxe automatic air conditioning, tinted windows, heated front seats and an easy-to-use leather multifunction sport steering wheel, which can also be equipped with shift paddles for the S tronic. From special colors for the air vents to fine leather upholstery – the price list offers nearly every customization option imaginable.

Two packages are available for both trim lines. The media package includes the concert radio system, the connectivity package, the leather multifunction sport steering wheel and the driver information system. The style package brings youthfully fresh color accents to the interior, including on the doors, the “yacht stern” and the air vents. The LED interior lighting package bathes the cabin in cool light. The aluminum-look trim visually underscores the A1 Sportback’s sporty potential. Additional exterior features are the contrasting roof line, the LED tail lights and the body-color side mirrors. quattro GmbH offers the S line exterior package, the S line sport package and the Audi exclusive line. Customers can order a variety of exterior and interior kits from the accessories range, even after the initial sale.

Communicative: infotainment and Audi connect.
A modular range of infotainment systems with components taken directly from the luxury class is available for the Audi A1 Sportback.

The first component is the optional concert radio with its SD card reader. It serves as the foundation for the connectivity package, which includes the Audi music interface, a Bluetooth telephone preparation kit and a navigation preparation kit. The customer can activate the latter at a later time. Audi also supplies the connectivity package as part of the media package. The next step up is the navigation package, in which the navigation feature is already enabled.

At the top of the line is MMI navigation plus, which sets new standards in the small compact segment. It includes a large hard disk, the MMI operating principle, a DVD drive and powerful voice control. The 6.5-inch monitor, which folds out from the instrument panel, displays three-dimensional graphics in high resolution.

Examples of the additional high-end complementary features available include a digital audio tuner and the 465-watt Bose surround sound system with 14 speakers. The front woofers are illuminated with LEDs. Bluetooth and wired interfaces are available for cellular phones and external players.

Another novelty in the segment is the Bluetooth online car phone that brings Audi connect, the new online services from Audi, to the A1 Sportback. These include navigation with images from Google Earth and Google Street View, specially prepared news, weather and travel information, web radio and voice-controlled POI search. A WLAN hotspot connects mobile devices on board to the Internet. Audi traffic information online provides a precise and up-to-the-minute picture of traffic on the chosen route.

Price.
The Audi A1 Sportback will debut at attractive prices. The 1.2 TFSI in the Attraction trim line costs €16,950, and the 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp) is priced at €19,050.

The Toyota Avalon, redesigned and made more efficient for the 2011 model year, moves into 2012 unchanged, still offering a unique combination of full-size room with understated luxury.

Given an elegant, more substantial presence in the 2011 redesign, Avalon evokes a time when travel was sophisticated, elegant and comfortable. Fully in tune with the times, the 2012 Avalon offers a compelling combination of performance and fuel economy. Its standard 268-horsepower V6 engine, teamed to a six-speed automatic transmission, yields both impressive acceleration and merging power with an EPA highway MPG estimate of 29 MPG.

Avalon’s 106.9 cubic feet of passenger space and 14.4-cubic foot trunk put it in the EPA’s “large car” category- (versus Camry, Fusion, and Sonata, Avalon is about nine inches longer). Generous rear seat roominess includes 40.9 inches of legroom.

The Avalon Limited in addition features heated and cooled front seats, an eight-way front passenger’s seat with lumbar support, driver’s seat cushion extension, rain-sensing windshield wipers and Smart Key. Additional standard features the Limited has over the base grade are: HID, chrome outer door handles (versus color-keyed,) outer mirrors have memory and puddle lamps, memory driver’s seat and wood-grained steering wheel/shift knob/rear armrest box lid. The Avalon grade can be upgraded with a JBL Synthesis sound system and heated front seats, and Navigation is optional for both grades. Restyled primarily at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor, Mich., the Avalon is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), a “zero landfill” facility that also assembles the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Venza. This model was developed at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Ann Arbor.

An available touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic (requires subscription), and Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability with music streaming to the audio system are among Avalon’s easy-to-use technologies.

Performance
The Avalon is powered by a 24-valve, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb./-ft. of torque at 4,700 RPM. The engine is equipped with the dual VVT-i electronic valve-control system that ensures a broad powerband. The six-speed automatic transmission provides an engaging driving experience and helps optimize fuel economy. Uphill/downhill shift logic selects the proper gear for driving conditions and helps provide moderate engine braking during downhill driving.

The 2012 Avalon’s EPA ratings of 20 MPG in the city 29 MPG highway match or even exceed those of midsize six-cylinder models, a testament to Toyota’s technology. The Avalon is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV).

The Avalon’s MacPherson strut coil spring independent suspension delivers a sophisticated blend of smooth ride quality and precise driving control. Rack-and-pinion steering combines with front-wheel-drive and optimized steering gear for an easy, natural handling feel.

Exterior Design
The Avalon projects an elegant, outgoing presence. A wide, substantial grille ties into projector headlamps. These blend with the broad hood to emphasize the Avalon’s wide stance. The headlamps, which combine multi-reflector halogen high beams with halogen or HID (only available on Limited grade) low beams, use “light pipes” to create a signature night-time appearance. The front fog lamps, integrated into a trapezoidal front bumper, provide wide illumination. Glare-resistant side view mirrors (Limited grade has both outer mirrors glare resistant, Avalon grade only has driver’s side glare resistant) feature integrated turn signals.

The Limited grade adds 17-inch wheels with a 10-spoke design with mirror finish. Dual exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the cutaway trapezoid shape of the lower bumper. Reshaped taillights reduce turbulence at the rear, helping also to reduce the car’s coefficient of drag. The lights integrate stop, turn and side marker lighting functions in one combined lamp. LED light pipes with dark aluminized sides and both clear and red lenses project a modern appearance.

Interior Design
The 2012 Avalon shows off a contemporary style inside, as well. The generously spacious and elegant interior is fitted with comfortable seating and thoughtfully integrated amenities. Coordinated colors and rich new wood-grain style materials convey the rich elegance of a luxury sedan. The instrument panel incorporates visually attractive and easily readable Optitron gauges that use graduated white illumination with white pointers. These are set inside smoked lenses and deep chrome rings that add depth and a sense of luxury. The steering wheel provides fingertip control switches for Bluetooth hands-free phones, the audio system, climate control system and the vehicle information center.

The Avalon’s rear seating area is configured to seat three passengers comfortably, with ample legroom (40.9 inches) and reclining seats that are unique in the segment. A convenient flip-down center armrest provides storage when the middle seat position is not in use. A power rear sunshade (available only on Limited) activated by a one-touch switch, filters sunlight coming through the rear window. The sunshade, which helps to protect rear seat passengers from unwanted light and heat, automatically retracts when the driver selects reverse gear.

Beyond the luxury of its spaciousness and obvious amenities, numerous details throughout the Avalon enhance the driving experience and passenger comfort. For example: The dual-zone climate control system has nine airflow modes for more precise control of the interior environment, and a clean-air filter removes dust and pollen. The vehicle doors use three stop positions instead of two for easier entrance and exit; a lockable glove box has a pneumatic-door damper and inner box illumination.

The front-console box features a sliding armrest that moves 4.7 inches front-to-rear to accommodate a wide range of driver positions; the elegantly stitched top is padded with a double density cushion material for softness. Inside the console box, there is a 12-volt outlet in addition to the USB and auxiliary audio terminals. The 2012 Avalon features a standard full-size spare tire on an alloy wheel -- a rarity in any segment.

Standard leather-trimmed front seats and seatbacks on the Avalon Limited are fitted with ventilation systems and an enlarged perforation area to help keep them cool.

Technology-Enriched Environment
The 2012 Avalon presents the driver and passengers with a comprehensive array of user technology for enhanced function and connectivity. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth® hands-free phone and music streaming technology to the audio system from a compatible device, SiriusXM® satellite radio capability (with a 90-day trial subscription to SiriusXM Select Package),USB and 1/8-inch auxiliary connections for iPod®, and other audio devices. Each of the three available audio systems can control iPods seamlessly using switches located on the steering wheel and display track information.

The DVD navigation system features easy search and address input functionality. The navigation system also offers new displays for road icons and points of interest, as well as a keyboard screen arranged in the same way as a personal computer. The Avalon grade’s standard nine-speaker audio system offers excellent sound quality, while the Limited grade features a standard 12-speaker, 660-watt JBL Premium Synthesis audio system with enhanced two-coil sub-woofer. The JBL system uses a 12-channel digital amplifier to deliver exceptionally rich, full sound to all seats of the vehicle.

A rear-view monitor function is standard in the rear-view mirror or with the available navigation system. The rear-view-mirror image includes on-screen back-up guides that help the driver to back into parking spaces or driveways.

Safety
The 2012 Avalon’s occupant-safety strategy includes use of extensively tested energy absorbing structures, protective side impact beams and overhead structure, advanced belt systems and active front headrests as standard equipment.

Seven airbags, including a front knee airbag for the driver, and side curtain airbags for both rows, are also standard on the 2012 Avalon. Toyota’s standard Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake
Assist and TRAC traction control system. TRAC and VSC functions can be disengaged if the driver needs to free the vehicle if stuck in mud or snow. Each wheel has its own pressure sensor to warn if tire pressure drops to critical levels, providing the driver with a warning.

The 2012 Avalon is available in nine exterior colors: Zephyr Blue Metallic, Cypress Pearl, Sizzling Crimson Mica, Cocoa Bean Metallic, Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black, and Sandy Beach Metallic. Having been extensively updated for the 2011 model year, with the introduction of an advanced new 3.6-liter V6 boasting a class-leading 283horsepower, changes to 2012 Routan line-up include the addition of even more features and equipment.

The popular Routan SEL with Navigation model, for example, adds Keyless access with push-button start, along with rain-sensing wipers. The range-topping SEL Premium adds, as standard, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.

What doesn’t change for 2012 is the Routan’s exceptional value. The well-equipped entry S model has a starting MSRP of $27,020, while the top-selling SE model line-up begins at $32,010.

Exterior

The 2012 Routan is instantly recognizable as a member of the Volkswagen family. Its front-end design hints at the horizontal elements that are part of the new Volkswagen design—twin chrome blades across the chrome-ringed grille, and matching twin horizontal blades across the lower intake.

The bold, aero-style front is dominated by swept-back quad halogen headlights that, seen front-on, take the eye to the Routan’s deep, sculpted front bumper with its projector-style foglights. Seen in a rear-view mirror, it’s a dynamic, most un-minivan-like look.

In profile, despite its 202.5-inch overall length and stretched, 121.2-inch wheelbase, Volkswagen designers have created a silhouette that is surprisingly sleek and visually ‘light’. The clamshell-like hood slims down the front fenders, while the swept-back windscreen, long roof rails, and body-color tailgate spoiler add to the streamlined look.

At the rear, oversized taillights, slim roof pillars and a large, deep, curved rear window help visually reduce the Routan’s 68.9-inch height.

But being a minivan, practicality is everything. So the Routan features large, wide-opening front doors and extra-large, optional power-sliding side doors, all designed to ensure easy access to the cabin. There’s also a full-width, high-lifting tailgate, with available remote power-opening.

The 2012 Routan models are offered in a range of seven colors, including Nocturne Black metallic and Deep Claret metallic. And, of course, the ‘famous’ Glacial Blue metallic that was the star of Volkswagen’s hugely-popular ‘Blue one’ TV commercial.

Interior

The heart of the Routan is its expansive, flexible, versatile interior. Volkswagen keeps it simple, and the height of comfort, by offering a seven-seat layout, with captain’s chairs for the two middle-row seats, plus a third-row, three-across bench.

And flexibility is the word here. The rear bench can flip, fold and disappear into the floor to leave a completely flat load area. Flip it over and back, and it makes a perfect tailgate seat to watch the game.

The middle-row captain’s chairs can fold flat onto themselves, or be removed entirely to create a cavernous load area. With the two chairs removed and the rear bench folded into the floor, the Routan offers an astonishing 144.4 cu ft of load space, easily accessible through the side doors and tailgate.

There are additional intelligent storage solutions everywhere, such as the dual glove boxes, or the over-sized storage bin between the front seats big enough to accommodate a large handbag or laptop. There’s available ceiling storage, and two deep, over-sized storage bins mounted in the floor. Plus, there’s an array of cargo nets, juice-box holders, trinket-stashers, cell-phone trays, not forgetting those 13 cupholders.

Up front, the driver is cosseted in a side-bolstered front seat with available eight-way power adjustment. Slim roof pillars, over-sized door mirrors and a high, command-driving position, help ensure impressive forward and side visibility—a key for safe driving.

Available power-adjustable accelerator and brake pedals, height-adjustable safety belts, and a steering wheel adjustable for height also help ensure a tailored driving position.

The Volkswagen-style steering wheel has standard leather covering, even in the entry S model. The white-faced instruments are, in true Volkswagen tradition, clear and unfussy, and easy to read at a glance.

Most models offer the choice of Volkswagen’s trademark perforated leatherette or ‘Vienna’ leather. The plastics have a soft-touch feel, while underfoot there’s high-quality, high-density carpeting.

Plenty of light and fresh air are key requirements with any minivan. This is why every Routan comes with power-opening windows in the sliding side doors, along with power-opening rear-quarter windows. A power tilt/slide glass sunroof is also on the options list and standard on SEL models.

Entertaining the kids—or adults—in the back is an essential minivan ingredient. And the 2012 Routan is loaded with more ways to play music, play games, watch DVDs, store photos, or talk on the phone.

It all starts with an in-dash MP3-compatible CD player with AM/FM stereo, an auxiliary input for connecting other audio devices, and six speakers. That’s on the entry-level S model. Move up to the SE and standard features include a six-disc CD changer with MP3/DVD capability, and Bluetooth® connectivity.

Engine and Transmission

All 2012 Routan models are powered by a new 3.6-liter 24-valve V6 engine mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

What sets the powertrain apart is its remarkable, class-leading power output of 283 horsepower, along with 260 lb-ft of torque, 90 percent of which is available from just 1600 rpm. It’s an impressive unit that focuses on light weight, high efficiency and low emissions. It features a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block with forged connecting rods, lightweight aluminum cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder, and aluminum exhaust manifolds.

Its design incorporates double overhead camshafts and high-flow intake and exhaust ports. These, in combination with variable-valve timing through independent cam phasing, allow optimum volumetric and combustion efficiency over the full speed and load range.

The result is an exceptionally flat torque curve together with high specific power. For the driver, this translates into outstanding drivability and quick-response to the throttle for off-the-line acceleration and fast, safer passing.

The six-speed automatic was fine-tuned with the introduction of the new 3.6 V6 to optimize its gear ratios and electronics to take advantage of the engine’s impressive outputs.

Suspension

Volkswagen engineers had a single-minded goal when they were developing the suspension for the new Routan: It had to ‘drive like a Volkswagen’.

So they focused on retuning the springs and dampers to help reduce body roll and improve steering response. They tightened the bushings throughout the entire suspension to give a sharper, more responsive feel to the cornering. And they increased the torsional stiffness of the steering column for more precise steering.

While no minivan could ever be described as having ‘sporty’ handling, the Routan delivers that ‘Drives like a Volkswagen’ feel. It’s nimble and agile, and eager to change direction whether it’s negotiating a mall parking lot, or taking a road-trip with family along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The basic layout of the Routan’s suspension includes a compact strut design at the front, coupled with coil springs and gas-charged dampers and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, there’s a space-saving twist beam rear axle, with coil springs and heavy-duty dampers.

Because Volkswagen knows the Routan might be carrying some weight in its daily-driving—the driver, six passengers and all that gear can add-up—the rear suspension of the SEL Premium model is upgraded to a Nivomat® self-leveling air suspension system. This also raises the Routan's towing capacity with the available hitch package, to 3500 pounds, making it perfect for hauling a jet ski, ATV, dirt bike or cruiser to the beach for the weekend.

And to haul it to a halt, the 2012 Routan features four-wheel Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), and Engine Braking Control (EBC).

The entry Routan S models comes with 16-inch steel wheels as standard, shod with all-season tires; the Routan SE features 17-inch 10-spoke Mervin alloys; while the SEL is equipped with 17-inch 10-spoke Rota alloy rims. The range-topping SEL Premium has five-spoke, broad-faced 17-inch Soho alloys.

Safety and Security

Safety is Job One with any people-carrying minivan. Which is why the 2012 Routan is equipped with a suite of the latest, most advanced safety features.

Safety for those inside starts with driver and front seat passenger front- and seat-mounted thorax side air bags. For the driver, there’s the additional protection of a standard knee airbag located below the instrument panel. There are also Side Curtain Protection® airbags that provide enhanced protection to all outboard occupants.

Active safety features that come standard with every 2012 Routan include Electronic Stability Control (ESC). New for 2012

As the Touareg was re-designed and re-engineered for the 2011 model year, changes for 2012 are limited to new equipment packages and additional features.

The VR6 and TDI Clean Diesel lines are now available with a new Touareg Sport with Navigation model that adds a sophisticated RNS 850 navigation system with an eight-inch color touchscreen, 60GB hard drive and Park Distance Control.

For 2012, the VR6 and TDI Clean Diesel Sport gain a touchscreen radio with in-dash six-CD changer.

Exterior

The Touareg has always had an imposing curbside presence thanks to its sleek profile and wide, dynamic stance. This appearance has been reinforced by the second-generation model, which is even lower and wider. It’s longer too, adding an extra 1.6 inches, and features an extended wheelbase—by 1.5 inches—to provide more rear-seat legroom.

In reshaping the Touareg, Volkswagen’s design team set out to give the new SUV a crisper, sleeker, more aerodynamic look based on the new Volkswagen Design DNA. This includes the horizontal front-end theme you see in the latest Golf and Jetta, and that ended up in the Eos and all-new Passat, as well the Touareg’s smaller sibling, the 2012 Tiguan.

Key design elements, which have also inspired the look of the Tiguan, include a narrower grille, featuring twin chrome-faced strips that connect seamlessly to new trapezoidal headlight housings. These feature a dramatic U-shaped ring of bright-white LED daytime running lights along with Bi-Xenon high intensity gas-discharged headlamps.

The horizontal theme continues in the sleeker, body-colored front bumper with its large, U-shaped, chrome-ringed air intake and large side intakes.

The new hood features a bold raised section that runs from the grille back to the windscreen A-pillars, adding to the strong, muscular, front-end face.

At the back, the new Touareg is defined with pronounced curves around the hatch area, new ‘L-Design’ taillights, and a blacked-out lower rear spoiler with a set of stunning, triangular-shaped chrome exhaust tips.

Thanks to the Touareg’s lowered body height, short overhangs, and clean, simple surfaces, the car doesn’t appear excessively large. Contributing to the seemingly smaller size are features like a broad, full-length chrome side-strip at the base of the doors, black-painted side window frames, and large wheels.

Interior

Ignore the rugged, mud-plugging SUV image; the 2012 Touareg is all about luxury. Witness the optional ‘Vienna’ leather in Black Anthracite, Cornsilk Beige, or brand-new Saddle Brown. Or the elegant Walnut wood accents. And the available 620-watt, 10-speaker sound system from Danish hi-fi specialists Dynaudio®. It has never been so comfortable conquering the wilderness or maneuvering through busy city streets.

Stretching the wheelbase has also made it easier to stretch out in the back. There’s an extra 2.7 inches of knee room: with a 40/60-split rear seat that can slide forward or back by 6.3 inches, as well as recline, there’s no better vehicle for relaxing on a road trip.

In addition to being able to carry five in comfort, the 2012 Touareg can also carry all of their luggage. Press a button on the elegant remote key fob to release the power-lifting tailgate and there is space behind the seats to swallow more than 32 cubic feet of cargo. Need more space? The seatback is split 40/20/40 with each section folding to offer an array of load-carrying possibilities. And with all sections folded, the Touareg can squeeze-in an impressive 64 cubic feet of luggage.

To let the sun shine in, the 2012 Touareg offers an available expansive panoramic glass sunroof. Measuring 57 inches long and 39 inches wide, it’s a full 350 percent larger than the sunroof in the previous model. It is so big that this tilt/slide roof occupies almost the entire roof area above the occupants, thus conveying a unique feeling of open space.

To cut all light, the optional panoramic sunroof is equipped with a power sunshade. The panoramic sunroof is standard in the Lux and Executive models, as well as the Touareg Hybrid.

For the driver, the 2012 Touareg offers the finest of workplaces. A new seat design offers more side and under-thigh support along with up to 12-way power adjustment. And, for more interior comfort headroom in the front (and rear) has been improved.

Volkswagen instruments set the standard for simplicity and clarity, and the Touareg’s oversized speedometer and tachometer are no exception: Crisp, easy-to-read numbers, red needles, no clutter. And mounted between the dials is a seven-inch color, high-resolution display providing the driver with the latest vehicle status information, including fuel range, turn-by-turn navigation directions, information from the drive system in the Hybrid model, and much more.

Mounted in the center of the fascia is either Volkswagen’s RCD 550 sound system or premium RNS 850 touchscreen navigation system. It features a crystal-clear eight-inch screen, with a DVD/CD player that has MP3 playback capabilities and Satellite/FM/AM stereo. A cool feature of the unit’s navigation system is that it can display maps and directions in a high-definition 3D view. To store music, the system features a 60GB hard drive with 18GB of space available to upload media. Located in the glovebox is access for an iPod® device or auxiliary input, SD cards and a DVD drive.

For true audiophiles, or those who like to play their music just plain loud, there’s an available 620-watt Dynaudio® sound system with 10 premium speakers (four tweeters, two midrange, four woofers) and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology. It rocks.

And the 2012 Touareg’s cabin delivers interior quality at its finest. From its soft-touch, low-gloss plastics, to its ‘Vienna’ leather, to its Walnut veneers and brushed metal trim, it delivers a true premium experience.

Engines and Transmissions

The 2012 Touareg offers a choice of three highly-advanced powertrains that each offer unique driving characteristics.

The 3.6-liter V6 FSI® gasoline engine is one of the most powerful that Volkswagen builds. With double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection, it produces 280horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Exceptionally quiet and refined, it delivers impressive off-the-line acceleration, strong mid-range response for fast, safe passing, and relaxed high-speed cruising.

Coupled with the eight-speed automatic transmission that’s standard on all 2012 Touareg models, the Touareg V6 FSI has seen real gains in fuel economy. The EPA-estimated 23 mpg highway/16 mpg city represents a combined 19 per cent improvement over the previous model.

The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine powering the Touareg TDI® Clean Diesel is acknowledged as one of the world’s great engines. It’s the engine that powered the Touareg TDI of Rainer Zietlow and his team on the recent TDI-Panamericana Challenge, setting a new world record of 11 days, 17 hours and 22 minutes for the grueling 16,000-mile drive from Argentina to Alaska.

This six-cylinder turbocharged powerhouse produces 225 horsepower and a mighty 406 lb-ft of torque from just 1750 rpm. It also delivers an EPA-estimated 28 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in city driving. That means up to 728 miles of driving on one tank of ultra-low-sulfur clean diesel.

To achieve its 50-state-legal emissions qualification, a deNOx catalytic converter, augmented by a special injection system that sprays AdBlue into the exhaust, helps reduce NOx emissions by up to 90 per cent. This lets the engine meet the Tier 2, Bin 5/ULEV II standards imposed across all 50 U.S. states.

Like the Touareg V6, the TDI Clean Diesel comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A first in the SUV market, this new transmission configures seventh and eighth gears as fuel-efficient overdrives: top gear reduces engine rpms by 33 percent over sixth gear. (The car’s maximum speed is reached in sixth gear.) In addition to offering significant fuel economy benefits, it makes for quieter, more relaxed highway cruising.

The transmission also features Tiptronic® manual control along with Sport mode, and a Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) that adapts to the driver’s individual style and adjusts the shift points accordingly.

Supercharged Hybrid

As Volkswagen’s first production hybrid electric vehicle, the all-new 2012 Touareg Hybrid pairs a 3.0-liter 333-horsepower supercharged, direct-injection V6 gasoline engine with a 47-horsepower electric motor.

The electric motor gets its energy from a nickel metal-hydride battery pack fitted beneath the luggage compartment. The 288-volt pack consists of 240 individual cells and offers an energy density of 1.7kWh.

Both systems are capable of running independently, or together. When combined they produce a total of 380 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, thus offering drivers the power of a V8 with the better fuel economy than a V6.

One of the real benefits of the hybrid powertrain is its astonishing off-the-line acceleration when gasoline and electric power combine to deliver that 428 lb-ft of torque. If hard acceleration isn’t called for, the Touareg Hybrid can cruise up to 30 mph on pure, zero-emission electric power.

The Touareg Hybrid also uses a host of innovative new technologies to help it achieve its EPA-estimated 24 mpg during highway driving. For example, when the driver releases the gas pedal at cruising speeds, the engine will shut off and a special clutch disengages the transmission from the engine, allowing the car to ‘coast’ along emission-free.

Regenerative braking also allows the electric motor to recover kinetic energy during coasting and braking, to help recharge the battery pack. And, in another first for the Touareg Hybrid, there’s a standard Stop-Start system, which automatically stops the engine during idling while, for instance, waiting at a red light. When the brake is released, the engine re-starts.

Suspension

The design changes for the Touareg included an increased use of aluminum. This contributed to the impressive 300-pound-plus weight reduction—366 pounds for the Touareg 3.6 V6 FSI and 330 pounds with the Touareg TDI Clean Diesel—compared to the previous versions.

Shaving this amount of weight has had the benefit of making the new Touareg feel more agile and responsive, delivering a more precise driving experience.

For this second-generation Touareg, Volkswagen engineers further developed its all-independent suspension. The basic layout, however, remains the same, with control arms at the front and rear. To save weight, the upper links are made from lightweight aluminum with the robust lower links made from steel. Long-travel steel coil springs are used at each wheel.

4Motion® permanent all-wheel drive is standard on all 2012 Touareg trim lines. The system features a rear limited-slip Torsen® differential that splits the available torque 40 per cent front and 60 per cent rear for balanced on- and off-road driving.

Variable-ratio power steering gives a precise, responsive feel to the Touareg’s helm, requiring 2.6 turns to go from lock to lock.

Wheel choices are dependent on each individual Touareg model. The Sport comes standard with the 10-spoke 18-inch Tacora wheel fitted with 255/55 R18 all-season tires. The Lux and Hybrid feature 19-inch, five-spoke Everest rims with 265/50 R19 tires. The Executive model has 20-inch Pikes Peak wheels with 275/45 R20 tires.

Safety and Security

The 2012 Touareg offers an impressive number of standard active and passive safety features to help keep driver and passengers safe.

Passive safety features include six airbags, including Side Curtain Protection® head airbags for the front and rear outboard occupants, and front and thorax units for the driver and front passenger.

The line-up of active systems include an advanced Rollover Sensor System that monitors the vehicle’s turning angle and speed, which can help detect a possible rollover situation. If it determines a rollover hazard is present, it deploys the side curtain airbags to help reduce the risk of injury.

There’s also a next-generation Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Brake Disc Wiping to help keep the pads dry so as to optimize braking when it’s raining, and Volkswagen’s advanced Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system.

The Touareg features Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System that automatically unlocks all the doors, disables the fuel pump, and turns on the hazard lights in the event of certain types of collision.

Finally there’s the peace of mind of Volkswagen’s no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Car Limited Warranty—three years, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Exterior

The badge says it all: SportWagen. Here is the melding of sleek sports sedan with versatile Euro-style five-door wagon, in a package that’s been described as having ‘Vroom to spare’.

An extensive redesign saw the front-end styling brought in line with Volkswagen’s new design DNA, with its focus on strong horizontal cues. It’s the same theme that has been adopted so effectively in the latest Golf, GTI, Jetta sedan, Eos and the all-new Passat.

The narrow grille features twin gloss-black horizontal blades running between the headlights, with similar horizontal vanes in the lower bumper section. They’re designed to visually lower and widen the car’s stance.

In profile, the gently-arcing roofline, with its sweep echoed by long roof-rack rails gives the Jetta SportWagen a sleek, fast look. Black trim surrounding the side windows of the S model—it’s in chrome on both SE and TDI Clean Diesel versions—visually stretch the car, helped by the body-colored tailgate spoiler.

At the rear, the sleek, stretched look continues with the fastback-like tailgate that opens almost full-width for ease of loading. The contoured rear bumper with its tailgate cut-out, adds to the SportWagen’s dynamic look.

To give the new SportWagen an even more custom appearance, there’s an available SportWagen Ground Effects styling package. It comprises a new front valence, side sill extensions, rear valence and larger exhaust tips. Interior

The 2012 Jetta SportWagen has impressive load-carrying abilities. Talking of seats, the driver and front passenger are held in place by available heatable seats. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel ensures a tailored driving position.

To let the outside in to the Jetta SportWagen’s cabin, there’s an XXL-sized panoramic glass tilt/slide sunroof. The aerodynamically and acoustically optimized roof comprises one glass segment for opening, and one fixed glass panel over the rear seat. It features pinch protection and an electrically-operated sunshade that covers the inside of the entire glass area. It’s offered on the SE and TDI Clean Diesel models.

Music needs are taken care of by Volkswagen’s RCD 310 radio/sound system. On the 2.5 S model it features a single CD player with eight speakers, aux-in and MP3 readability. Engines and Transmissions

The 2012 Jetta SportWagen comes offered with a choice of two technically-advanced engines. Buyers can choose either the 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder gasoline engine, or the highly-acclaimed, 50-state compliant 2.0-liter TDI® Clean Diesel.

The 2.5-liter produces 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. It features an aluminum-alloy crossflow cylinder head with four valves for each cylinder, double overhead camshafts, maintenance-free hydraulic lifters, and sequential multi-port fuel injection.

A six-speed manual transmission comes standard on the SportWagen 2.5 with the option of a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic® and Sport mode. Tiptronic allows the driver to shift manually with an up or down push of the gear selector. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway and 23 mpg in the city for the 2.5 with six-speed manual, and 31 mpg highway/24 mpg city for the six-speed automatic.

Volkswagen’s highly-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged in-line four-cylinder TDI® Clean Diesel produces 140 horsepower and a muscular 236 lb-ft of torque delivered for strong low-speed response, between 1750 and 2500 rpm.

This state-of-the-art diesel features turbocharging and an advanced common rail direct-injection fuel system. The valvetrain comprises double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters.

Standard with the Jetta SportWagen TDI Clean Diesel is a six-speed manual transmission. Optional is Volkswagen's acclaimed six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode—providing drivers with the performance of the manual gearbox and the precision of an automatic. DSG helps the SportWagen TDI Clean Diesel deliver an EPA-estimated 39 mpg highway and 29 mpg in city driving, while the TDI with manual transmission can average 42 mpg highway and 30 mpg city.

Suspension and braking

Volkswagen engineers created a suspension system that not only delivers fun, responsive, driver-focused handling, but does so when the car is loaded-up with heavy gear.

They used a proven strut-type front suspension with coil springs, a lower control arm and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, there’s a sophisticated fully-independent multilink arrangement with coil springs, telescopic dampers and anti-roll bar.

The electro-mechanical power steering system includes variable assistance and active return to help keep the driver confident and the Jetta SportWagen stable yet responsive, heading through every turn. In tight parking spots, it provides a 35.8-foot turning radius, with three turns of the wheel lock-to-lock.

Stopping duties are handled by a power-assisted four-wheel disc brake set-up that, in the Jetta SportWagen 2.5, utilizes 11.3-inch vented discs at the front and 10.1-inch solid discs at the rear. For the TDI Clean Diesel version, the diameter of the vented front discs goes up to 12.3 inches, with 10.7-inch solid rotors at the back.

An Antilock Braking System (ABS) is naturally fitted as standard to all Jetta SportWagen models, along with Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Engine Braking Assist (EBA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Safety and Security

As with all Volkswagen models, the starting point for ensuring occupant safety is an extremely strong and rigid body structure. Key body panels are joined with seamless laser welds, instead of spot welds, for added strength.

To protect those inside, there are driver and front passenger front and side thorax airbags, together with Side Curtain Protection® head airbags covering outward-seated occupants front and rear.

Additionally, the SportWagen comes with Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response System that, in certain types of collisions, automatically shuts off the fuel pump to the engine, unlocks the doors, and even switches on the hazard warning lights.

Gloss-black-painted brake calipers nestle behind stylish new 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. New for 2012

For 2012, the sixth-generation GTI continues to be offered in bold two- and four-door body styles, powered by an advanced 2.0-liter 16-valve turbocharged and intercooled TSI® four-cylinder powerplant.

To group together some of the most popular stand-alone options into one package, Volkswagen is introducing a new version of the GTI for 2012—the GTI with Convenience and Sunroof. This takes the entry GTI—either two-door or four—and adds a power tilt/slide sunroof, leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, and the Premium VIII touchscreen stereo with in-dash CD changer. The two-door version with smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission has an MSRP of just $25,945. For the four-door version, it's $26,545.

Changes to GTI with Sunroof and Navigation, the next step up, include the addition of distinctive new LED daytime running lights, while the flagship GTI Autobahn also adds LED Daytime Running Lights, together with new 10-spoke, 18-inch Serron alloy wheels.

Exterior

For three decades, the GTI has defined the mold for the classic shape of the sporting hatchback. Clean, minimalist lines mixed with sharp, intricate detailing produce a style that always remains sleek and contemporary. See an early GTI on the street today and it still looks fresh and modern.

And the design formula continues with the 2012 GTI—a long wheelbase with short overhangs and a wide track to give that 'planted', road-hugging look. With this sixth-generation GTI, the aggressive front end features a striking black honeycomb grille with a simple GTI badge on the passenger side to reinforce the model's identity. Distinctive red stripes outline the grille which flows into the dramatic, angled teardrop headlight housings.

Bi-Xenon headlamps with an AFS adaptive front lighting system are available as a standard feature on the GTI with Sunroof and Navigation and on the GTI Autobahn. The GTI with Sunroof and Navigation model and the GTI Autobahn also feature, as standard, new bright-white LED daytime running lights. Defining the GTI's front-end design is a large, full-width honeycomb fascia with twin air intakes below the bumper, flanked by twin, vertical halogen fog lights.

The car's streamlined profile continues toward the rear, with a subtle pair of black side skirts running partially along the GTI's lower edge. To heighten the GTI's hunkered-down stance, blistered wheelarches cover hugely-distinctive, flat-faced 18-inch Detroit aluminum-alloy wheels shod with low-profile, all-season performance tires. For 2012, Volkswagen is differentiating the flagship GTI Autobahn model by fitting new 10-spoke 18-inch Serron alloys.

At the rear, horizontal taillights are integrated into the quarter panels and hatch. In addition, smoked red brake lenses are underlined by clear reverse and turn signal lenses. Blended into the bumper are red running lamp lenses along with a blacked-out diffuser with cut-outs for the chrome-tipped, split dual-exhaust.

At the top of the rear hatch is a body color 'duckbill' spoiler which houses the third brake light. A real 'surprise and delight' of the tailgate is the VW badge which tilts to release the rear hatch.

Interior

It takes just a few seconds sitting behind the GTI's three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel to sense the exceptional quality and remarkable craftsmanship that goes into its cabin. High-quality, soft-touch plastics are integrated with tasteful aluminum and chrome highlights. Panel gaps are tightly controlled.

As you'd expect from a sporting hatchback, the GTI's front seats are heavily bolstered to help keep driver and front passenger supported during enthusiastic cornering. And they come standard with eight-way manual adjustment on the two-door GTI, adjustable lumbar support, and height-adjustable head restraints. Four-door GTIs have power recline on driver and passenger sides. Trademark GTI cues run throughout the cabin: on all models up to the GTI Autobahn, there’s the famous plaid cloth upholstery panels in the seats. Bold red stitching that's also featured on the headrests, center armrest, shift lever boot, and leather-wrapped steering wheel is a GTI cue, too.

A performance car demands performance instrumentation and the GTI delivers, with its oversized tachometer and matching speedometer that has an integrated engine temperature gauge and fuel gauge. Positioned between the black analog gauges is a multi-function onboard computer display that provides the driver with key information regarding fuel mileage, odometer, outside temperature and more.

Another sporting element is the GTI's race-inspired, brushed metal-finish pedals that include rubber inserts for extra grip. And on the left side of the footwall, there's an all-important over-sized footrest for added support and comfort.

Practicality and versatility are also key attributes of the latest GTI. Its high-lifting tailgate provides easy ingress and egress to a load area that offers 15.2 cubic feet of space. And with the folding rear seat back split 60/40—and featuring a pass-through—there's real flexibility for load carrying.

Engine and Transmissions

Under-hood, the 2012 GTI features the award-winning double-overhead-cam, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder gasoline engine, with direct fuel-injection and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters.

Producing 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, the 2.0T offers up athletic performance. With all 207 lb-ft of torque delivered in a flat line from just 1700 rpm to 5000 rpm, the turbo engine is extremely flexible and responsive, making for rapid passing and fast, back-road progress. It's remarkably efficient too. The 2.0T engine and six-speed manual transmission deliver an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway and 21 mpg in city driving.

For drivers who want the performance of a traditional manual transmission with the precision of an automatic, the GTI is available with an optional DSG® six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The transmission's advanced dual-clutch system features one clutch that controls the 'odd' gears plus reverse, while the other operates the 'even' gears. So, if the GTI is being driven in third gear, fourth is already selected but not yet activated. As soon as the ideal shift point is reached, the clutch on the third-gear side opens, the other clutch closes and fourth gear engages—all in the space of four-hundredths of a second.

The result is crisp, rapid-fire shifts without the loss of power that is typical with a traditional manual gearbox. This shaves a couple of tenths off the manual transmission car's 0 to 60 mph acceleration time and improves fuel economy: EPA estimates show a remarkable 33 mpg on the highway and 24 in the city.

Buyers who opt for the DSG transmission can switch between fully automatic and automated manual operation, which enables the driver to control every gearshift. The DSG® transmission lets the driver shift up and down using either the finger-operated paddles mounted on the GTI's steering wheel, or by tapping the gearshift selector up or down.

As an added performance bonus with DSG, a Launch Control program can be engaged which, when the car is stopped, allows the engine to build revs before the first clutch is engaged, creating a perfect quick-off-the-line launch with controlled wheelspin.

Suspension

To deliver the kind of responsive, precise handling enthusiasts expect from a GTI, fully-independent, European-tuned suspension is employed at all four corners. At the front, damper struts with lower control arms and a stiff, tubular anti-roll bar help keep the front tires planted during hard cornering, reducing body roll and heightening steering feedback.

Keeping the car settled at the rear without sacrificing passenger comfort, a compact multilink independent layout features coil springs, telescopic dampers, and an anti-roll bar. The four-link layout features three lateral control arms—the spring mounting, the track rod and upper control arm, and a trailing link at each wheel. Suspension assemblies are attached by way of a rear-axle subframe and, as at the front, rubber and metal mountings that are soft in torsion but stiff radially are used to help ensure the anti-roll bar responds immediately and suppresses body roll effectively.

On each side of the car at the rear, the spring and damper units are located separately, with the coil spring bearing directly on the trailing link and the damper attached to the wheel hub assembly. This enables the suspension geometry on the compression stroke to generate a toe steering effect that maintains neutral behavior, or some slight understeer, in all driving and load-carrying situations. It also helps ensure excellent driving stability on rough, uneven road surfaces.

To help ensure that power is applied properly in challenging conditions, the GTI features the XDS® cross-differential (limited slip) system that electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the front wheel with the most traction.

Steering and Brakes

The GTI's highly-praised electro-mechanical power steering system is able to vary the feel of the steering wheel to suit the speed and driving situation. It is firm and direct when driving fast, requiring less effort at parking speeds. Other advantages of the system include its mild self-centering action, and its ability to help compensate for driving hazards like crosswinds and steep road cambers.

Bringing the GTI to a halt are 12.3-inch-diameter vented front discs and 11.3-inch-diameter solid rear disc brakes, each with distinctive, red-painted calipers. Naturally, anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard, along with electronic brake pressure distribution (EBS) and hydraulic brake assist (HBA).

Safety and Security

The 2012 GTI comes with an array of standard safety features, both active and passive. For driving security, enhancements include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), and Engine Braking Assist (EBA).
