Bmw 3 Series Coupé wins Gold Medal for design

The BMW 3 Series Coupé has received a prestigious thumbs up in the influential 2007 “Industrie Forum Design iF Product Design Awards”, collecting an exclusive iF Gold Award.
The 3 Series Coupé follows in the wheel tracks of the E90 3 Series Sedan, which was judged a winner last year for outstanding excellence in design.

The BMW Group is also celebrating the recognition of its K 1200 GT and
F 800 S motorcycles, while four industrial designs by BMW Group’s Designworks USA also
picked up awards.

An international panel of judges selected the 3 Series Coupé for being one of the most outstanding examples this year of attractive and successful product design worldwide.

Products designed by BMW Group Designworks USA were also recognised. This very special subsidiary of the BMW Group has studios in Munich, Singapore, and is headquartered in Newbury Park near Los Angeles.

Designers at these three studios focus on the automobile and motorcycle, on information technology, industry and travel, objects and space, life and leisure time, as well as home and office.

In the iF Product Design Awards 2007, BMW Group Designworks USA won four iF Awards, for the interior equipment and fitting for the Embraer Phenom 300 private jet and the interior of John Deere's 850J Crawler in the Transportation category. It also won for designing a recycling unit for plastic bottles and aluminium cans as well as a vacuum cleaner made by the traditional Danish manufacturer Nilfisk.

In all, the Awards considered presentations from no less than 2,293 products from 35 countries.

The iF Label is renowned and acknowledged the world over as a symbol of comprehensive, up-to-date product quality in design. Present-ed once a year, this special Award gives leading designers, manufacturers and brands the unique opportunity to successfully face global, inter-disciplinary and therefore highly challenging competition.

In recent years the BMW Group has won a large number of prizes and awards. Numerous vehicles as well as accessories and lifestyle products marketed by BMW Group brands already wear the iF Label.

In the annual iF Product Design Award products are assessed in 12 categories ranging from Consumer Electronics and Telecommunications through Household/Living, Leisure Time/Lifestyle, Industry/Buildings, and Public Design/Interior Architecture all the way to Transportation and Packaging.

The criteria applied by the jury in presenting the award include the degree of innovation of a new product, its functionality, the visualisation of its purpose, safety, as well as the environmental compatibility of a new product.

First Drive: 2007 Honda Civic GX

Previews Greenie spendthrifts wanted: A heavier, slower Civic with a smaller trunk. Oh, yeah, and it costs 50 percent more. Never mind that we in Michigan are just emerging from our igloos after a long cold winter. The world is heating up, the ice caps are melting, and when that melt is complete, we’ll all be living high in the mountains in houses on stilts to stay dry. Forty days and 40 nights the waters will rage, and when the ice caps refreeze, we’ll all be fighting over who called first dibs on those last two pigs for our celebratory barbecues, since the unicorns were already eaten by sharks. There are people who would argue that that sinister little creation, the automobile, is responsible for it all. We blame Al Gore, China, sweatshops, and greenie celebrities who flit about in private jets. Those who want to make a difference drive hybrids, while those who researched their decision drive diesels. Those who are truly enlightened and want to make a difference, however, seek someth...
